Jump to: Newest in thread
My baby sister (ok she's 25 but still the baby!!) is off to Casper, Wyoming today for a 3 month internship teaching life sciences halfway up a mountain.
Really excited For her but also worried she might get eaten by a bear!!! So, people of Fab, so you have any survival tips for near attacks that I can pass on? |

Get some bear spray, keep your food away from your camp and never ever go out carrying a pickinick basket. but bear attacks are a fairly rare occurrence. They generally regard humans as too much of a neiusance, they're more likely to try and break into your food. |

First thing is not to run away! The idea is to make yourself appear as big as possible to the bear and make a lit of noise to try to scare it off. If you are attacked you're supposed to roll up into a ball and tuck your head in as tightly as possible.
Black bears are fairly harmless its brown bears that generally attack, good strong pepper spray is handy along with either a high powered rifle (.308 or bigger) or a .458 handgun. |

As like most animals they'll more than likely only attack if they think you're a threat or their starving hungry and smell you have food.
Mother's of any species are always protective so stay away from or be cautious around them. If possible when walking be noisy, most wild animals don't want contact with humans and on hearing you will bugger off.
Animals instincts like ours are fight or flight and the bear is one that chooses to fight in certain situations so just try not to get into any of those. I would think it is generally people trying to see how close they can get or trying to get closer for a decent picture then end up getting caught out. |

I think you stand your ground and make yourself look big with a black bear, you run as fast as you can from a grizzly, or it could be the other way round lol but bears run at 30mph so you better run fast lol |

I read that Usain Bolt's top speed is about 27mph so good luck trying to outrun a bear doing 30mph lol.
My advice is to practice climbing trees |

Easy answer to this one. Wear Bear Bells on your wrist.
If they hear you coming or moving they usually will avoid you. Its when you surprise them there is a problem
Experience gained from lots of time in the middle of nowhere USA |

Lived in Canada for four years the advice there was
Walking on the trail make noise ( bears are quite nervous )
try to make your self seem bigger than them. If attacked Lay still and play dead ( easier said than done )
try to back away as slowly as possible don't run ( it will catch you )
Don't try to out climb it ( when you got to top of tree it's behind you and you got no where to go )
And lastly don't go near cubs because they're not cute and cuddly and mummy gets pissed off.
Hope this helps and don't worry bear attacks don't happen often |

I hear you should play dead.
Though ad my favourite comedian then promptly points out how do we know the last person mauled by a bear wasn't playing dead. They might have been the best at it. The bear could've been all like "a convincing portrayal of the dead... But i'm sooo hungry." |
