The art of getting a point across
Jump to: Newest in thread
More than happy to blame internet culture for this one, but there's been a steady degradation in our collective ability to get a point across in a fair and balanced manner.
You just have to take a snapshot of these forums to see what i mean. Unless you are deliberately trying to be contrarian, there's always a way to express yourself without totally alienating a whole group or subset of people. and more so, there's always a way to debate a point of _iew without resorting to name calling, etc etc. Just my thoughts on a Friday morning. What do you all think? |

I think that people that resort to this way of arguing, often lack the necessary vocabulary, evidence to back up their argument, or have the intelligence to get their point of _iew across without belittling someone else or their point of _iew....oh and did I mention the narrow mindedness to respect others opinions...and you can bet your bottom dollar that most of them wouldn't be so bold face to face......yep. Think that'll do!
That said, I'm always right and if you don't agree with me, you can stick your opinions where the sun don't shine. Morons! |

Wit and humour always welcome, even when it's scathing. It is possible to disagree with a post without resorting to denigrating the person posting.
There does seem to be a growing trend for freedom of speech statements to act as a proxy for opinions being presented as facts. Yes, you are entitled to your opinion but you holding that opinion does not automatically turn it into a fact.
My observation of the cyclical, repetitive, arguments of late is that they get stuck on the loop of one persons opinion being challenged as it is being presented as fact. |

The pack mentality have been rife on one thread this morning.
I am no angel and often take the piss out of spelling, grammar and double meanings.
But that is different to attacking somebody because they have a different point of _iew. Many on here claim a non vanilla attitude to sex but show themselves to be quite narrow minded |

This is a good way to approach some subjects in my opinion. I myself do this regularly. |

Oh bugger, has the pack been unleashed? I'd better try and find some work to do, those threads irk me a bit and I usually can't help but defend the OP who's getting savaged...
Mind you, it's Friday afternoon, what the hell, I'm going pack hunting |

Which is fair enough. I wouldn't expect anyone to compromise their values or beliefs. However.....
Stuff like the size or race threads on here especially. You usually see level headed responses. Then you get those who come in thinking they are white knights and say something utterly mind boggling.
It is possible to express your preference without putting down the group(s) that fall outside that preference. Same applies to many other topics, but you get my drift. |

As a man of few works I find the effort involved in trying to make a salient point rarely provides the sort of self satisfaction you'd expect from attempting to be a right smug bastard,,, |

Totally agree with this
The people who take this kind of approach probably don't intend to create discord but it so often does and it doesn't make for pleasant reading most of the time. I like a good debate but when a thread descends into an all out 'war of the preferences', that's my cue to back out gracefully and engage myself elsewhere. |

What is irritating is the way people nit pick a few words in a lengthy post which has been written with thought and puts across a logical reasoned argument. Or the individual is attacked not the argument. And those who do this think that this really is making a cogent argument. I tend to step away at that point - no point keep slamming your head against a brick wall. |

The main thing though you will notice is people suddenly become sheep, and once one person has expressed their _iew or preference it then becomes obvious who are the sheep and normally to get their leg over. |

But surely if relevant points are not greeted with unchallenged universal approval they arn't really relevant points at all, unless the person making them is arrogant enough to assume that anyone who disagrees must be thick as fuk..
Or meringue???

I really should do this more often. My big gob gets me into trouble sometimes and often my sarcastic humour doesn't come across in the way it was intended.
Ah some of us will never learn |

Im hope some folk on here like my posts, I'm sure there are quite a few who don't!
But I think to myself that I will probably only ever meet (in person) less than 0.001% of the total site membership - so thats a lot of people I can piss off remotely before I start doing myself any real damage.

Don't diss the meringue by lumping it in with the arrogant, one point, stuck in a groove, nit pickers.

I always give my opinion and I am not swayed by what others have written.
People will often get offended as they do not like challenge. However I do not call names or get abusive on the forum but I don't really sugar coat my words either.
In the main I believe I communicate well and I am not abusive.
There are many who fail and type things like FACT, wtf or lots of exclamation marks after their postings
as well as calling others names. They are limited in their ability to put forward a well reasoned argument or debate |

I don't think so - I see lots of well considered _iews on here. There's a fair bit of dribble in between but that's mostly people more interested in trying to impress with the size of their verbal cock (oblivious that it's protruding from their head).
The ones that piss me off are those that state something but are then unable to back it up when questioned. But then we can all be outright experts on an anonymous forum. |

Depends on what they are saying. As long as it's not racist, sexist, homophobia, or bullying then i don't see any problem. Im sure the moderators would soon put a stop to any threads that are getting out of hand.
Id rather someone said i was talking bollocks, than people who try to make snide little digs at people through in-jokes in threads(this one for example). |
