So how have you drivers been dealing with the new road laws? Anyone been fined yet?
I was a bit shocked to find out that police could now fine people for tailgating and lane hogging when the only drivers I notice doing it are taxis and police.
Funny enough, yesterday I saw a police car tailgating a driving test session on a virtually empty main road.
What's funnier about this law is that a police car can tailgate any old driver, pull them over for shits and giggles and then accuse them of lane hogging.

They're both annoying and tailgating is potentially dangerous but I don't think it's fair slapping 3 points straight on your licence for it (well, maybe the tailgating - my pet hate).
Surely it'd be better just to have a word with a lane hogger by the side of the road then send them on their way - rubber-stamping their forehead with indelible ink first so if they get picked up for it again, THEN they can be fined  |

Totally agree, but Delta taxi drivers in Liverpuddle are the most dangerous drivers I know and I never see them pulled over.
One smashed into the back of my mum's car not looking where he was going and tried to claim compensation from her, even faked a medical form without actually having seen a doctor.
Luckily, very luckily, I discovered who he was and gave him a few options to think over. |

middle lane hoggers are cocks, there no excuse, the do gooders bleet on about educating the drivers, but it's a fundamental rule of driving, you should fudging know already to keep to the sodding left.
the police are fantastic hypocrites bit not much we can do about that. however, it shouldn't be a fine, it should be penalty points, it's fudging dangerous.

I do agree with you too, but what about the middle of the month to the end when lazy policemen have to meet the monthly quotas and would sooner stage a false charge? |

They would but for most current offences they require adequate evidence to prosecute. I believe for these new laws it simply comes down the discretion of the traffic officer at the time. |

I agree with this - you're either speeding, or you're not but lane hogging is arguably subjective. Also, I don't think you can compare it to tail-gating and give both offences the same penalty ... lane hogging is inconsiderate and irritating (especially when lorries do it), tail-gating is intimidating and almost certainly dangerous.

For me fining the lane hoggers is great news!! I have seen them on the M25 at night late when there are 4 lanes no traffic about and in the third lane. After flashin behind them they dont move at all and force you to go into fourth lane when you need only be in second .. Bring it on !! |

I agree with this - you're either speeding, or you're not but lane hogging is arguably subjective. Also, I don't think you can compare it to tail-gating and give both offences the same penalty ... lane hogging is inconsiderate and irritating (especially when lorries do it), tail-gating is intimidating and almost certainly dangerous.

I cant comment on a specific company, as indeed you shouldn't, its kind of against forum rules,
However people who drive for a living are usually the safest drivers around,
they cant afford for their vehicle to be off the road , even for a day.

Whilst a fair few people are using dashcams this is a null point. Regardless of why the person in front stops you should leave yourself adequate distance between you and the vehicle in front to come to a stop before you hit them.
Safest way to deal with a tailgater is increase your own safety distance between you and the vehicle in front. That way you wont have to brake as hard in an emergency situation which'll prevent the numpty behind you going up your arse.
Whilst I understand what the police are trying to enforce I still think they should require evidence to prosecute. Of course those who choose to be lippy or backchat to the police you're on your own then and setting yourself up to get the book thrown at you. Not all police are bad, luckily for me in my years of bike riding and driving I've met some very nice police however I have also met a few do-gooders. |

When driving on motorways etc I mount my spear gun on the rear of my car pointing and ready to fire at those tailgaters.I normally use it mounted on my kayak for those jet skis who get to close on Loch Lomond and yes I do give a warning shot over the cars roof first!!! |

 Exactly.
I did get pulled over by one that annoyed me a little. Whilst I appreciate that I had broken the speed limit I was informed the cut-off that day was 80mph and I was clocked at 80.1mph...That one did ruin my ride a little, especially as when he clocked me I was going downhill. If he'd clocked me at the big junction at the bottom he'd have noticed I'd gone sub 60mph due to the hazard. Oh well, I did the crime so paid the fine, was just a bit gutted to be told 0.1mph less and it'd just be a warning  |

Not if a car cuts in front of you and then brakes (which is how the cash for crash scams worked).
Insurance companies look *very* carefully at rear-end collisions, and do not automatically treat it as the car behinds fault. |

Whilst it wouldn't completely stop tailgating if there wasn't so much lane hogging going on there wouldn't be so much tailgating. If people moved into the left hand lane a tailgater will carry on past, problem solved. I think too many people sit there thinking I'm doing 70 mph why should I move over, thinking it is their job to keep the traffic speed at the speed limit. It's not, that is what the police are there for.
As for brake testing people if you are found to have done so you could well be charged with dangerous driving.
Professional drivers such as lorry drivers will often tailgate each other on the motorway as they can rely on each other not to be complete and utter numpties by slamming their brakes on. |

i myself put up a post about the 50 mph speed limit in force on the m62 as they upgraded it ,so now job done great only now they have put in a variable speed limit set at 50mph with speed cameras set into the gantry too.so still cant go any faster on the stretch i go on grrr |

Even worse on dua carriageways wher a lorry will pull out to overtake a lorry on a hill causing miles of tailbacks as the crawl past the marginally slower lorry and for what in most instances to be 32 ft closer than they were.
I think all lorries should be restricted to inside lanes only |

Just because they drive a lot I wouldn't personally class lorry drivers as professional, especially those that tailgate. The main reason they tailgate is because they get the draft from the vehicle in front and will achieve a higher mpg and thus use less diesel. How ever professional someone is their reaction times will not be much different to others. Also based on the fact that the tailgating lorry will be able to see nothing in front of them other than the rear of the other lorry lets hope nothing happens to cause the lorry at the front to have to emergency brake! |

I agree, but the can be relied upon not to slam their brakes on just because someone is drafting them, unlike the numptie posting above who seems to think it is a good idea to brake test people when he feels they are driving to close. They would only slam their brakes on in a emergency.
I say professional in the loosest terms as anyone who works for a living driving so this would include taxi drivers etc. We've probably all had to slam on our brakes due to a hgv pulling out immediately after putting their indicator on.
I do find it amusing that the middle lane hoggers are the ones who moan about the lorries using the middle lane as it holds them up, whilst they moan about tailgaters whom they are holding up and refusing to change lanes to allow them to go on their merry way. Pot kettle black. |

I think the police have a dispensation to use communication devices when driving. They wouldn't be able to use their radio's else. It depends on whether it is their work device or their personal phone. |

Delta Taxi's are Fantastic.
I use them two days a week for four trips.
I've used them since I was 17.
Fantastic private company started from nothing and grown to cover most of Liverpool.
They insist on the highest standards from their drivers and they act on any concerns that customers have.

Lots of people rib scousers, nearly all the scousers I've met have been nice people. I've worked with them and meet some at glastonbury every year. Every town and city in the country has their share of scrotes.

Don't suggest dishonesty in an honest man, he might just lower himself to get even.
And Delta? It's a generally good taxi company but with a good few dangerous drivers that really dont give a shit about other drivers' or pedestrians' safety on the road when they see a traffic light turn red. |

As an HGV driver am less worried about these than the crackdowwn by mr plod on HGVs parked in laybys along the A14/A47 for not being lit between dusk & dawn. Can see it going nationwide pretty quick meaning more fines for HGV drivers |
