Can someone please put a 10 foot high fence around it! then bloody tourists wouldn't slow to a crawl to take pics and it wouldn't take over an hour to drive the 2 miles past the site!
Sorry, not a Thursday I know, but bloody annoying on any day, it is just some stones in a field afterall! |

stonehenge is not just a pile of stones. It is a world famous historical site with an unbelievable atmosphere. Sunrise on the summer solstice at the stones is a magical and almost spiritual place, and no i am neither druid, hippy nor religious. |

Dude, I have a much larger circle to deal with where people always seem to slow down. What's more, the M25 has no where near as much kudos as Stonehenge. Count your blessings. |

They may well of been there long before any of us, the engineering side of how the builders got the stone there from wales and how they constructed it fascinates me, I wasn't saying get rid of it. I wasn't saying it shouldn't be there and I wasn't saying it was a bad place etc. but I don't think any of the amazing or historical features makes for an excuse for poor driving, causing traffic jams and regular multicar shunts!

I travel the 303 every other Friday, and in the summer months I go around the back of Stonehenge.
Trouble is many more know this way now thanks to satnav.
As for the stones, the present structure was built in 1960's with the aid of concrete.
So what you see isn't all original. |

I totally understand your feelings. I work at a popular tourist destination and the tourists do my head in all day but to top it off they are always the ones driving along the road at 30mph in front of me on my way to work. 9am and I'm already pissed off cos some idiot thinks 30 is acceptable on the main road and they always turn in just in front of me as I arrive at work.
And before anyone says "without them you wouldn't have a job" do you really think me being beholden to them makes me feel any better?

The current traffic issues are not due to tourists alone.
The area surrounding Stonehenge is being re-developed.
A major road that used to run close to it has been closed so that it can be filled and grassed over in order to provide a better setting for this historical monument.
There will be a new visitors' centre a mile away from the site too.
Stonehenge used to get slated for being expensive for what it is worth.
In truth, I agree. I have yet to pay to park or to go inside to the fence.
However, I have high hopes that the re-development project will give it a new home that it truly deserves at long last.
BTW, I live Wiltshire and the major road that has now been closed used to be a short cut for me, and I have experienced the inconvenience myself!

Yes it is. Summer solstice last year pissed down all night. Stopped an hour before dawn. Didn't stop the atmosphere or the impromptu band in the stones. |
