"Do you want the touch screen to detach to be a tablet?"
No the one i'm looking at doesn't do that, I guess i'm just wondering if touch screen is better for windows 8 as i'm used to using windows 7.... |

I spent Ages researching laptops before I bought one.... Only enough, I have never usedit on my lap, because I prefer a mouse to the pads and buttons.
Since I got my android phone I have never used my laptop....
At best, I connect my phone to my desktop at work....
I will not be buying another....
Perhaps not helpful, but it's another point of view... Good luck... |

I'm not on Windows 8 yet. If it doesn't detach why would you want to touch the screen? I'd get a normal one. |

Small touch screen laptops are often slower unless buying at the high spec end
General rule is more memory and bigger hard drive
And while cheap brand laptops are ok for home use if travelling a lot the more expensive brands tend to be better cases and survive travelling |

Because i've been reading reviews that windows 8 works better on a touch screen but i'm not sure if its worth losing 4 inches for a touchscreen |

Touch screen is well handy, another to look at is the Microsoft surface down to £279, I find I use my dell xps 10 for a lot of things then laptop for more power Hungary, and the iPad sits on the side doing nothing. |

The drop in size of screen is not much of a problem if screen resolution stays same.
For creating content I use a laptop.
For web/movies when travelling tablet, it has keyboard so ok for some typing
At home like now just phone . |

Don't buy a touchscreen. If you get something with Windows 8 the new interface is crap. I am on windows 8. I installed a program called classic shell to make windows 8 look like windows 7. |

I hate the Win8 interface as well. I imagine it would be good on a touchscreen tablet or something, but on a laptop or desktop it is absolute rubbish. I reconfigured it so I work in desktop mode all the time so it looks more like Win7. |

When Windows 8 first came out, the desktop mode didn't fully behave like Windows 7 and people like me who bought their laptop when it did just first come out had to do a bit of reconfiguring to get it how we wanted it. Since then they have made some changes to the interface for desktop mode so it behaves a bit differently to how it did when it was first released. |

Possibly. I haven't used the newer version so not sure. So going by what people have told me. I think they have stopped the charms menu popping up in desktop mode and given back the start button I think. |

they are still there but if you go onto the silver screen then u can operate the laptop as though it was windows 7, u have to turn off the thing that scrolls from one screen to another left to right ........... but the shop did that for me lol |

"check out alienware laptops...."
Unless she's looking at some hardcore gaming then there is no need for an AlienWare!
Windows 8.1 will be out in Oct which has returned the start pin (it's not a button) and all that does is send you to the (don't-call-it-) metro UI.
It's added boot-to-desktop too so you don't need to do the extra configuring you have to do now.
A touchscreen is future proof but only if the rest of it is up to scratch... For what you want and to be future proof for up to 2 years then at a minimum you want an i3 or AMD A series CPU, 4-6gb RAM and 500gb-1tb HDD.
Windows 8 is better on a touchscreen than pure keyboard and mouse BUT you can always downgrade to Windows 7 if you decide to get a non-touchscreen Windows 8 laptop.
Personally though I'd just get the touchscreen.

You can have Win8 looking like Win7 by downloading "Classic Shell". It's still Win8 that's running but it gets rid of all these stupid panels etc. |

Windows 8 is easier with touch, but not impossible without. If your a Win 7 user it will mean a mental shift, many find that tough but you will get used to it. Ask me via PM (IT guy) if you need help making it feel a little like Win 7.
Use case should be your deciding factor. I would nit choose screen size over DDR/RAM memory. Disks are in the 100's Gigabytes (GB) and are huge anyway nowadays. RAM is 4G, 8G .. Get as much as you can afford.
If you are very portable, then small screen is great but add an external screen if you can at home. If its not for portable use then big screen.
Personally I would look at processor performance grade and amount of memory and go for greater of those and then consider touch. A slow machine is a real bore!!

All very valid points above....Win 8 does take a bite of getting use to the 'tile' setup but it seems to be the future & touchscreen is an important part of that development.
Good luck with the purchase.. |

DONT buy HP lol they over heat a lot !!!
Aside from that buy a normal size laptop with win 7 minimum of 4GB of ram and a decent processor ( i3, i5 ) and try and make sure the processor is over 2GHZ speed
Sony , Samsung and toshiba are the best buys by far as they use decent components and are well built.
Touchscreen on laptops is still way behind and no where near as responsive or as interactive as the ipad. MS are still playing catch up and win 8 will not reach its full potential until the technology catches up
Some great deals to be had out there so listen to all the above advice from other posts and happy shopping |

Think i've decided on getting the Toshiba C850 had decent specs for a reasonable price....
Intel Pentium dual core.
2.2GHz processor speed.
8GB RAM.
750GB hard drive.
Microsoft Windows 8. |

I do on th PC World type adverts. Even though I understand it it still sounds like gibberish compared to the Apple ads - but I suppose that reflects the user bases. |

Spend £50 more and go for the C850 - 1LQ
