In France, Austria, Italy and others it is 130 kph (80mph) Germany unlimited on the autobahn are we outdated in the UK?
Is tailgating, lane hopping, smoking or using your phone or any other distraction more hazardous than excess speed on a quiet motorway?

Not sure. But technology doesn't make an idiot less of an idiot, so put an idiot behind the wheel of any car and they can become a serious risk.
Let me add, my idiot comment certainly is not aimed at Pearl's thread, or Pearl. |

I agree totally on that, tons of nut jobs out there who drive to impress. Last accident i was involved with was at 15mph when the pillock behind rear ended me as he took his eyes off the road to light a fag
I have driven in Germany often and over all they drive faster but they are pretty courteous to other drivers. Not saying its good or bad though to drive at speed more wondering with ABS, Disk breaks, runflats etc since 1965. |

My uncle had never been in an accident, not until he drove in Germany, got his car totalled due to another driver, was lucky he wasnt's seriously hurt.
..........
Until we are rid of d*unk drivers, technology wont make a big difference, unless it stops those over the limit driving. |

yes i believe motorway speed limit outdated but only motorways lol but with that i do believe tougher penalties should be introduced to try curb bad n dangerous driving like using phones, tailgating, undertaking and lane hogging etc... |

100% agreement on d*unken drivers. Never ever an excuse on that. Everyone knows what they consume. Alcohol is the cause 14% of all car accidents and 35% of all car accident fatalities.
Also on normal roads A's B's etc well in many cases 30 is too high and 20 would be better especially round schools.
I just spent time stationed in Germany and maybe less traffic then but it felt safer. |

as much as i would love the speed limit increased we would then only want it up to 90 and so on, more speed = more fatalities.
technology is making driving safer but no'one is going to defeat the safety benefits of technology by increasing speed limits, we are trying to get accidents and deaths down not keep them the same.
p.s i do love speeding 155mph in my TT once lol on a pricate road of course |

Interesting question, and yes, the govt has been asking questions about this more and more recently.
The advances in technology have improved massively over the last few decades, abs, better brakes, better tyres, better suspension etc all mean that a modern car will easily stop in about 50% of the stopping distance of the older car, but only once the brakes have been applied. This has NO impact on the "thinking" time that happens before the modern brakes are applied, 99% of drivers drive so close that even the thinking distance is too close and accidents happen.
I sit beside different drivers over and over on a daily basis, some of these have massively different driving abilities, some terrify me at 20MPH some I'd feel safe at 180MPH.
I think the speed limits should be variable dependant on conditions ( we already have the technology) and this would improve safety. The cost is prohibitive so its unlikely to happen anytime soon.
Because I know how bad some of the drivers are out there, yes 70MPH is probably best.
*** I actually think a 500% stricter driving test would be better, then only the best and safest drivers would be out there, the cost and expense of the additional instruction and testing to allow more drivers to reach the required standard could be paid for in the savings from insurance companies, the police, fire brigade, ambulance,NHS etc.as they would be required less.
The number of accidents caused by drivers with an advanced driving certificate is very very low indeed, if everyone was required to be taught to this level the number of accidents would be reduced dramatically. |

Herbert Austin said in the 1920's "Good brakes encourage bad driving." The more technology that is available the more it will encourage an idiot minority to push it to its limits.

think of the stopping distance
go any faster it take longer to stop

Yes but Brakes and Tyres are so much better these days, as said earlier though there are still the Idiots.
I have a Car and Bikes and I enjoy the speed of the Bikes but only where I can safely or as safe as can be. |

completely agree with safety being paramount 0 - think maybe speed limits should be lowered on residential roads but on the motorway I have seen more accidents caused by lack of speed than speed - funnily enough that harsh breaking when you see what u think is a police car and then as you approach and it says highways agency and you speed off is a good example. |

The current limit of 70mph acts as a buffer zone as the majority of drivers using the motorways allow their speed to creep up to 75 or even touch 80. The police won't stop anyone for doing 80mph unless they have to stop them for another reason and have the police have recommended an increase to 80mph for some time now.
By raising the limit, how many drivers will them let their speeds creep up to 90mph? It takes it all a little step further to 100mph and then you're in a whole different ball game. I can handle a car at 100mph but even I've had a 'wobble' at that speed once or twice.
Keep the limits at 70mph. Everyone will be a lot safer, I think. |

the problem is technology has made cars so much safer that most idiot think no mater how bad they drive they will be safe. spead is'nt the bigest problem it the idiots thats behind the wheel that they are invinsable!
i think the best safty device that they could put in a car is a 6inch spike in the stearing wheal. that will make you drive safer. |

the main problem is
all cars are so safe now airbags , crumple zones,
the driver feels so safe, and thinks if i do have a bump i`ll be ok
if they made cars so that the first thing hit was the drivers legs they would be far less accidents

Of course! That's the answer isn't it. Let's all drive vehicles that maim us without prejudice if we contravene any of 1,000 different rules. There's probably a good reason why level headed thinkers create our laws and not the knee-jerk reactionists that come up with crap like you and the poster above you just posted. |

If motorway speeds are to be increased, which I think could be a good idea, there needs to be a min speed too.
You only need to read another thread on here how some people thing of other road users, good or bad...
The only true way to catch bad or dangerous drivers is by police patrols, speed cam have their limited use, ANPR cars and vans are needed and are good, but only patrols will catch bad and dangerous drivers...

70mph can seem painfully slow, especially in a modern car, and I would like to see the limit raised to 80, but in all honesty I'm not so sure that in the UK the roads are of a suitable standard to allow it.
Germany, France and Austria have miles and miles of straight, good quality motorway and all the bells and whistles which go with it - adequate amounts of service stations and parking facilities being one of them.
In this country you can go for miles and miles and miles on a motorway before there is anywhere to pull over and stop for a stretch of the legs and a breath of fresh air, it's bad enough falling asleep at 70, let alone 80, or 90 as it probably would be in reality, cos lets face it, most folks exceed the limit on a motorway, myself included
So yes I'd like to see it increased and No I don't think out current road system would cope |

Motorways are actually the safest places to drive. If any speed limit needs changing to save lives it would be the 30mph limit in residential areas.
There is clear evidence that if a child is hit at 20 mph then there is a much lower chance of death than at 30 mph although it is still controversial and some people dispute this.
Only trouble is that the brainless idiot boy racers who knock kids over would pay no attention to a speed limit anyway.

Monotony can cause accidents too. I would vote for variable speed limits. 90 on clear days when the motorways down to 40 for congestion or fog etc. Wouldn’t complain if they put more cameras up either to enforce. The average speed ones you see not I think are a great idea. |

Technology can fail I think Toyota could testify to that right now add to that, that cars get old and owners can fail to keep them maintained turns a car into a very dangerous thing. Add to that the fact that most of the numpties out there that want to drive at 80+ miles an hour do so anyway without a care in the world its a disaster waiting to happen |

Apparently one of the reasons not to raise the limit is because the crash barriers are made to withstand the current top speed and would be ineffective otherwise. |

Although I cannot dispute what you say, it does suprise me that there isn't a safety margin built into the crash barriers which would cope with speeds in excess of 70mph.. |

Its all well and good saying raise the speed limit to 80 or 90 when your driving a 5 series bmw or a v6 mondeo, but try driving at 90 mph in a Peugeot 106 1.1 and you’ll be all over the road and have arms like mike Tyson after a 20 mile journey, hence the reason it’s still at 70, unfortunately not all cars handle well when doing excess speeds. |

just because the speed limit is 80 or 90 doesnt mean that you have to go at that speed - just as you dont have to go 70 now...

speed kills, and to go that fast you can kill loads of people in one hit, i say keep the speed limit as it is and lower it at some places.
getting somewhere is quick is not worth killing anyone. and yes some people drive save but there are many who dont.

I have numerous cars, some of which are capable of approaching 200MPH.
In motorsport you see accidents all the time, I have seen injuries at 15 MPH, I've seen people walk away at 180MPH plus, its horses for courses.
In the right setting 30 is too fast.
Speed doesn't kill, inappropriate speed kills.
I will however agree speed makes accidents worse, when I choose to race all circuits have a disclaimer you must sign, everyone there knows the risks.
On public roads other people dont sign any disclaimers, I tend not to drive fast if there are other road users there. |

"i've always wondered why they make cars that go faster than the national speed limit "
Several reasons,
The speed limit is in the UK , so if a manufacturer makes a worldwide car then it has to be able to cope with every country its used in, ( Parts of Germany cars are not subject to speed limits), it wouldn't make commercial sense to make a car for every single country on its own.
Also if a car is only capable of 70 MPH and you drive it at 70MPH then you are using 100% of its capacity each time, (anything you use "flat out" all the time will wear out quickly) if it can do 140MPH then its only 50% of its capacity theoretically it will last much much longer as its not stressed and straining at its maximum all the time.
There are occasions where overtaking a "limited" commercial vehicle at a governed speed is safer than risking a long slow overtaking attempt, a little speed can be safe ( and legal) in those circumstancies.
Some cars are popular in the motorsport clubs etc throughout the country ( Why else would Mitsubishi/Subaru etc spend so much on rally championships etc) these cars can be multi-use, used on road and circuits. ( The UK has a tradition of driving to circuits to compete) so these cars are required to be road legal.
I'm sure there are many more reasons, but those few popped into my mind. |

For me 70mph is right although I'd reduce the limit to 15-20mph round schools.
If you consider 60mph is a mile a minute I'd say 70mph is enough, not least given the reaction times of drivers who get too close to the vehicle ahead.
What I think we would all like is the roads where we are actually able to do 70mph.
The transport system in the UK is broken and has been for years.
I drive to London regularly and frequently my average speed for the trip is 35-40 mph.
The system is bust. |

It is true that breaking distances have significantly reduced since the days when the speed limits were set, plus some studies show increasing speed increases awareness … as modern cars are too comfortable at 70mph and thus trick the brain into thinking it can have a rest and drift off to occupy itself with other thoughts. Stats for autobahn accidents are said to also support this theory.
Modern car safety features are in a completely different league to a 1966 Vauxhall Viva.
And even though I would love the national speed limit to be increased, I can’t help but think: Speed doesn’t kill… hitting shit does! And sadly there are too many twats on the road waiting to cause an accident.

as all new cars have an ecu running the engine and they are set to the countrys emision regs the car is sold in.
a small change in the eprom could set a max speed at very little or no cost to the manufacturer
cars used for racing could apply for an exemption cert. |

If your going to be jobsworth and quote get your convention rates right! 130kph is just over 80mph. And its 10% plus 2mph which i make 79mph as the bookable limit. |
