New road laws come in to force today, so...
Honda drivers, stop hogging the middle lanes, you can still do 40 miles an hour in the inside lane
BMW drivers, tailgating is a no-no, sorry guys I know you enjoy this
Also fines for not using a seat belt and using a phone have gone up to 100 smackeroonies
Let's be careful out there peeps |

I think you should be allowed to overtake in all lanes. It's so annoying having to move around those middle lane hoggers.
Rather than fine though. I noticed that if the motorway signs advise people to move over and use the driving lane instead of the two overtaking lanes. They actually do. I think some people just forget. |

I think there should be new laws against Prius drivers having a superiority complex, to be fair I don't care if all that comes out of your tail pipe is baby foxes, your car is shit, and it leaves a bigger carbon footprint to buy one new than it would to drive say a 1982 ford Capri for ten years so I'm not going to wiry about my carbon foot print, mostly cos I drive everywhere |

"Love coming up behind an Audi, they don't like their mirrors filled with a Skoda badge!! "
They're the same cars anyway (VAG group).
I saw an Audi TT on the M1 the other week, just south of Nottingham doing 40 in the middle lane and refusing to pull into the inside lane.

I drive a lot with my job and lane hoggers, tailgaters and undertakers are the worse people on the road. Wouldn't bother me if they put it up to 9 points, maybe people would learn to drive |

Sadly getting stuck in the middle lane is sometimes unavoidable, with all the lorries sitting at 56mph. And don't get me started about when they pull out on a hill to try to overtake another lorry with less than two seconds of indication and little care for what's behind them (that's not aimed at all truckers and before you start I used to drive one so know how hard it it blah, blah blah). |

The thing is you dont see very many jam sandwhiches on the motorway anymore as the highways agency officers now do most of the work ( even though they have no powers whatsoever lol )
So will be interesting to see how this is enforced ?? |

"I set the cruise control for 70mph (middle lane) and still get overtaken and yesterday on the M23 undertaken by a twat. "
Reminds me of the woman a few years ago who stuck in the outside lane (the other overtaking lane) doing 70 and complained when the police gave her a ticket |

Ive sign the signs in Scotland and Ireland telling folk to return to the left lane and it really does work. Cant understand why we dont don't do it. |

I imagine the enforcement is the lesser issue here ….
The fact this new initiative has got us all talking about the dangers created by inconsiderate drivers raises awareness of these prolems and will hopefully result in a fewer accidents.

Motorists know what they should do, its getting through to to them to actually do it !
Mind you take a look at col regs for confusing rules |

"Undertaking is legal if your in laned traffic and the other lanes are slower than the speed limit "
Yes it is legal, it was removed from the statute books in 1972 but the Highway Code advises against it and the idiots who weave in and out are not driving with due care and attention IMO. |

You should see the amount of camera's on the M1 from Castle Donnington to Nottingham, pretty much every half mile, its ridiculous and since they've been there the jams and ques are ten times worse even though that section of motorway is 4 lanes now. |

"With reference to the M1, that to me is people getting into lanes 3 and 4 way too early before the big turns for the A50, a6 and a42 and that long hill climb"
Oh, I agree but the sheer number of cameras play a huge part. People speeding up and slowing down between them. |

I drove in France recently and there were very few cameras and very few speeders....very few cars compared to here though. And tailgating in France is not considered rude or aggressive. It bloody annoyed me though! |

I've driven all over Europe and the French are second in the European list of awful drivers. Top of the list are the Italians, which is a shame as they make the best cars!
Driving in the States can be fun too, they overtake and undertake at will... |

That's hogging the middle lane - you can still do 70 in the slow lane you just pull out to overtake slower heavier vehicles, if your being undertaken your hogging ! |

It always infuriates me even more when you get someone sitting at 45 in a 60 & there's no room at all to get past! Throw in older drivers with cars that are too powerful for them who drive it about like postman pat. It grinds my gears. Thankfully I'm not on the motorway too often.
Oh & before I forget, don't you just love it when a car comes flying up behind you & flashes at you to pull over?? |

The idea of penalising inconsiderate and dangerous drivers is all well and good however these traffic laws have been in place for many years ...its the fixed penalty and its implementation that worries me ...another cash cow ready to be milked to fill the coffers ....fixed penalties seem to be all the rage nowadays. I have noticed a huge increase in normal bobbies sitting about doing traffic duties up here instead of their usual patrols ...me thinks they are under pressure to fill quotas of fixed penalties from the heirarchy... |

Still don't understand how they will enforce these changes. At best it will be patchy. Oh and you can't use cameras to detect middle lane hogging unless you have them the entire length of the motorway system. How would you know if the car in pic1 and pic2 was in the centre lane, that it hadn't changed lanes between the two images being taken. What constitutes centre lane hogging anyway ? Being in the centre lane for more than 5 minutes ? What about prevailing traffic conditions ? Trouble is that poorly thought out legislation brings the law into disrepute.
I'll put the soap box away now |

"the biggest problem is that motorway driving isnt in the test, you pass and then are put on a motorway and have no idea what to do, education is the key here"
I think it should be mandatory to have motorway lessons after passing your test. The number of people who don't check their blind spot before changing lanes is ridiculous. |

In theory new rules are good howevwr policing is another matter cant imagine it veing a priority to indundate motorways with cops.
Another thing is say for example you get pulled for hogging middle lane how is it determined as one persons view of it time wise maybe different to another and what happens if you believe they are wrong and do not accept the onspot fine do they then arrest you or just take details.
I think the tailgating is the biggest danger which needs targeting but again case of police being around at the time. |

This all to raise more money from motorists. If the government were really serious about these issues, they would not have to fine anyone, points on your licence would deter people far more than a fine. |

That isn't undertaking. Undertaking is an aggresive manouvre where a car moves into the inside lane, speeds up, gets ahead of the car in front and moves back to it's original lane but is now in front of the car that it was originally behind.
The first instance mentioned was just keeping up with the flow of traffic. |

At the risk of being a boring pedantic git, I'm sad enough to have to explain in detail the minutiae that my moan above entailed. I wasn't 'hogging' the middle lane doing 70mph - I was overtaking a lorry and this car sped past me on the inside and into my braking distance, hence he 'undertook' and was speeding and had no consideration, so for the posters above who implied I was hogging, I can assure you I wasn't. |

Your own post implied you were hogging the middle lane.
Quote 'I set the cruise control for 70mph (middle lane) and still get overtaken and yesterday on the M23 undertaken by a twat.'
He probably thought you were a twat hogging the middle lane, as he had time to undertake you, did you not have time to return to the inside lane? How many miles before the lorry did you pull into the middle lane to overtake?
Setting cruise control for 70mph, most speedo's are not 100% accurate so you were probably doing 65mph in the middle lane for however long you dawdled there for.
If he had time to undertake you, you should still have been in the inside lane.
But hey, I'm sure you think you're the worlds best driver... |

The rule which allows passing on the left of slower moving traffic on a motorway (only) is no 268 in the current Highway Code. Make use of it all the time on the M25. Have to. Full of feckin middle lane huggin' tossers....

Rule 268
Do not overtake on the left or move to a lane on your left to overtake. In congested conditions, where adjacent lanes of traffic are moving at similar speeds, traffic in left-hand lanes may sometimes be moving faster than traffic to the right. In these conditions you may keep up with the traffic in your lane even if this means passing traffic in the lane to your right. Do not weave in and out of lanes to overtake.
Just for clarity's sake. |
