I don't know about you lot but I work a decent days work for my money. But it's most frustrating opening the papers nearly everyweek and there it is. . . Mr or Mrs Anonymous charged with murder! Comfy life in prison kept by me you and the rest of the tax paying brits! Why why why! In clear but cases surely ropes more cost effective? |

You support hanging then for people who are only charged with murder? |

An eye for an eye makes the whole world go blind.
I do not believe in the death penalty under any circumstances. Why should we as a society lower ourselves to the same level as those murderers? I prefer to hold on to as much of our humanity as we can. |

Fair point, but what about such as Peter Sutcliffe, Donald Neilson, Myra Hindley, that Soham chappie, those who took Jamie Bulger?
Government policy in recent years has been to put stuff out to tender.
Let the bidding to become official hangman start. £100k here, i'd get double that back in ticket sales. |

Would you like to be the hangman OP? be the one that ties the rope around another humans neck? the one that pulls the lever, hears the neck snap and watch the life drain out of someone who a few months down the line was found to be innocent?

If the evidence was unequivocally against the against the accused & there was no way it could have been anyone else then why not? It would act as a good deterrent & stop thousands of pounds of taxpayers money getting wasted on appeals etc. Controversial perhaps but I think a lot of people would secretly agree |

I can't agree with or condone murder by the state in my name I can't see how it makes us or them any better than the criminals. How can we claim the moral high ground when we're prepared to commit the same act? |

They have done the figures in the USA and it is cheaper to imprison people than to execute them.
The figures for this can be found on amnesty's website.
Think lots of very expensive appeals etc.
The only people that would benefit would probably be the barristers.
It runs into multiple millions to execute someone.
It doesn't prevent murders either so there is no benefit to doing it whatsoever. |

Care to explain Afghanistan then?
Agent Orange, Napalm in Vietnam?
Ultimately, because the victims have a different opinion and philopsophy to the West? |

It doesn't act as a deterrent
1) 'cos criminals never consider for one minute that they'll be caught and
2) 'cos in countries where capital punishment still exists, so does murder. |

Let's say that a 20 year old murders a pensionner. Quite rightly, revulsion.
The media report a groundswell of "let the fucker rot in jail for as long as we can keep him medically alive, the longer the better."
Isn't that equally barbaric, inhumane?

More a family tradition than 'official'.
Read the story of James Berry, executioner. Fascinating stuff. |

What about kiddy fiddlers. Or murderers in any sense. Life in this country means about 15 years, less if you are a good boy. Prison is no deterent. I lived in the middle east for ten years, and in all that time there were four murders, and the culprits got Hung on live telly. One hell of a way to get your message across, and one that worked. |

Interesting. Sticky slope when you start to qualify the victim?
Would people change their views if it was their nearest and dearest involved?

Bearing in mind Savile hasn't actually been convicted.
Nor, for that matter, had Fred West. |

You cannot qualify the victim, otherwise you move into a whole new area of ethics. If someone raped my daughter, I would kill them, given the opportunity. However, I consider myself a law-abiding citizen. |

Yea I get the same impression. I would be interested to know how our opinions might change if we all had a little more insight into what prison was like on both sides of the argument. |
