probably can call the cops for harrassment, defamation of character, slander and false accusations of major offense. if anything you can get a cease and desist order on them.

Seriously though, if you're going to report them for harassment or whatever, then use 101 non emergency number rather than dialling 999 (that's the Brit version of 911 dblcheese )

It's not really a police matter.

Defamation of character is a civil offence, not a criminal offence. Consult a solicitor about what your options are, regarding suing them in the civil courts.

I don't think anyone intends to be nasty, but to many outsiders it appears comical.

The best way to diffuse a situation is to talk openly and calmly.

Knock on the neighbours door say hi, you think there's a misunderstanding but you want to clear the air.

If you don't feel your great at stuff like that then write a letter or speak to your neighbourhood policing team you may have a quick word.

But face to face calm honesty showing how you feel and the desire to reconcile is best. Good luck.

If they have done this on two or more occasions and these actions are causing you distress ( and it can be proved to be the neighbours ) speak to the local police. May be an offence under Sec 2 Protection from Harassment act. They may give them a warning to stop in the first instance.

We suffered 'neighbours from hell' for about five years. The reason being that for five years the police did absolutely NOTHING!

Attempting to get a resolution through civil court is unlikely to be successful and will cost you a fortune.

What you need to do is collect evidence, the police will NOT do it for you, nor will they investigate the matter. You need to collect independent evidence such as audio/visual recordings of an illegal doing.

Witness statements from anyone other than a complete stranger will not be accepted.

One example... My wife was attacked by our (now ex) neighbour armed with a glass milk bottle. FIVE witnesses made official statements to the police. CPS chucked it out because the 'witnesses' were other neighbours and therefore are NOT considered to be reliable as they are known to all persons concerned.

You truly have our sympathy as you will find you are in a VERY difficult situation with very little help available to you. Now if you accept that fact and put in the time and effort to collect independent evidence you can win and resolve the matter... always have your mobile and or camcorder ready.

Best of luck to you.

Don't let them win! Go out there, remove the balloons and go about your business with your head held high! Invite your mate over and sit outside with a cuppa and if you see neighbours snooping give them a big grin and a wave!

Take pics of them at yours first though. And get another neighbour to go with you to their door so you have a witness you weren't abusive and just returning their property as good neighbours do.

I joined in with the piss taking (I always do, it's the way I roll), I also offered some serious advice (again I try to answer the OP as well as be a smart arse). OP, you've had lots of sensible advice, it's an open forum, there'll be daft posts. Ignore them, act on the advice you've been given and contact any of the people who've been suggested. Come back and let us know how you get on - above all, try your best to not let it get to you, I do really think being frightened to leave the house because of a few balloons is an overreaction, if there's threatening behaviour then it's definitely a police matter, otherwise you may need to seek help for your anxiety problems if you're not already doing so. Best of luck to you

"Geniune question ;

Why is tying balloons to door handles so bad ?

are you for real!!!!!

im not a prostitute never hve been nd never will be so don't like what stupid chavs r doing

would you like it if it was happeneing to you

I think not !!!!!!!"

That sort of (over) reaction doesn't help and just makes you look like some kind of bunny boiler. the guy asked a reasonable question, why is tying balloons to a door so bad?

Brighton - even Hove!

I've never heard of prostitutes advertising by having ballona outside their door. If I were a possible punter, I'd think it was a kiddies birthday party not the house of a prostitute and I don't think any rational normal person would think that either.

Take the advice already given: take photos, pop the balloons, phone police, take legal advice.

Not exactly the most aggressive action is it. "Right I really don't like her so I'm going to tie some balloons to her door"! Surely some shit through the letter box is more likely?

Honestly OP, you need to play them at their own game. They think that doing this stuff is upsetting you, that raises them emotionally above you - just like any bully.

Personally I'd have taken the balloons, crossed out the drinks and replaced with something funnier, maybe added a couple more of my own, and put them back on my door.

I'd then have spent the day near a window so I could see who took the most notice of it (i.e. which neighbour looked most disappointed) and kept them on the radar.

If someone threatened to smash up someone's car then you should know who it is? In that case, as direct threatening action the police will 'ave a word' but probably not much else until the next time.

Meanwhile, don't allow them to intimidate you, but don't be directly confrontational - think of them like you would kids playing Knocky Nine Doors - a nuisance but too small minded and pathetic to care about.

Now then, if you have friends visiting for an hour at a time, surely you have enough friends for a show of force if things do get out of hand? Or are these Fab type friends?

OP when you mention having friends over are these FAB friends?

The reason I ask is when I was very active on the site and had a lot of meets with guys that used to stay an hour or two, my neighbours got the same idea about me.....if you look at it, it's easy for them to get that view about me. However I found that amusing and I played up to it and it didn't bother me, which is clearly not the case for you. I did however stop answering the door in stockings & a basque ( which im sure you dont do) and also made my FAB meets a little more subtle & discreet.

My suggestion in addition to following all the other useful advice offered would be if you are having a FAB friend over ask them to park round the corner & be very discreet about it, until it all blows over.
