Way over Yonder, that's where I'm bound

I was listening to Rufus Hound interviewing Caitlin Moran about her teenage diaries yesterday. It's worth listening to, if only to thank the heavens you didn't live next door to her family.

Did you keep one and have you still got it?

What does it say about today back then?

Mine from this date in 1978 says "She gave us even more chores. Read my book and watched TV. I am not having a good week."

My diary then was a slimline week to view appointments diary and the handwriting had to be small. I'm now trying to remember what the code was for all the * and ! that litter this little book.

Mine had lots of codes that I have no idea what they meant anymore. Every day usually said "I'm bored".

Did we all have codes? They really can't have been that cryptic.

I know ? stood for expected date of period. If it has a tick next to it then it arrived when I thought it would. There was more coding too. I only remember that one because I used it for 34 years until my periods ended.

I heard a trail for the Vanessa Feltz episode and she had the codes too.

I hope the memories are still fresh. It would be interesting to look back at then and now.

I think some codes were boys I fancied (and didn't know I existed). No change there.

I stopped keeping a diary when I was about 16. Just as life started getting interesting. I still have them hidden away.

My mam kept a diary every year right up until her sudden death 2 years ago. Yes I have them and have read them. Lol. Interesting facts about who said what and who did what and how much things cost. Mostly what she read and when we went shopping. Fun to read and have.

There are strict instructions to never read mine after my death.

How would you feel if you discovered your mother had a rather racy secret life in her diaries? I think with distance it would be fine but I would find it odd.

If you don't want people to read about it don't write about it.
