Everyone's vehicle will have a slightly different read out due to how they are made. Whilst a speedometer can never over read it can under read by up to 10% I believe. It may just be that when your speedo is saying 50mph others are saying 46mph. Many are also aware that their speedos under read so travel through the 50mph zones at 55mph on the clock. Those with sat navs may possibly use the GPS speed readout so they know exactly how fast they are going. So there are a few reasons. Of course it could just be that they feel the need to intimidate you to get out of their way as they only have x amount of hours to get to their drop off point.
Personally I don't like something that big coming up from behind and sitting on my arse either |

"why do car drivers feel the need 2 overtake a cyclist an at a junction
almost costing an accident "
Why do "some" cyclists feel the need to run red lights at junctions causing the same problem as above??? |

Yes, trucks' tachos give an accurate speed read-out so it's perfectly possible for the truck to be doing a legal 50 when you're doing an indicated 50 but which is nearer an actual 45 due to your speedo's inaccuracy.
I don't use satnav, but my speed camera unit gives a similarly accurate read-out. SPECS systems are becoming more common, particularly at long-term roadworks and I drive through them on my camera unit's speed rather than my speedo. |

I think the answer is that truckers are often on tight schedules and want to maximise their travelling time. Similar reason as why they will overtake another truck while going only marginally faster and cause traffic chaos behind. |

"How did we get from tailgating truck drivers (though it isn't just truck drivers that tailgate) to a car vs cyclist debate?! "
I don't know. But in view of the original post if cyclists are going to be discussed maybe it should be in the context of why do the vast majority (in the region of 80%) of cyclist and pedestrian fatalities in London involve commercial and construction vehicles? And is that statistic in anyway linked to the style of driving mentioned in the OP? |

Trucks have speed limiters. On motorways they will all travel at the same speed. On an incline, the empty truck will be able to maintain his speed while the laden one will slow down. It is the only opportunity they have to overtake |

I'm led to believe that a large amount of the cycling fatalities involving goods vehicles, box vans occur on left turns, where the cyclist is on their near side.
Blind spots and failure to take proper care seem to contribute.
I see from a lot of your posts you cycle, as do I to work. Whilst lgv drivers are no worse than cars on the whole, they have to realise the consequences of a large vehicle driven badly is far worse. They can't stop as quickly and have a greater impact on other road users.
And to counter any arguments from motorists yes I as a cyclist need to be responsible too ! |

It also does annoy truck drivers having to slow down to less speed than they have to. They are on fairly strict legal time constraints. They have drop off time constraints. It also can take a long time (compared to a car) to regain their speed, especially if going up hill, they can weigh up to 40 tonnes. Driving is about average speeds, have you ever noticed that you can fly past a lorry, and then maybe 20 minutes later stop for fuel, in the time you have stopped for fuel the lorry has got back in front of you whilst you fill up with fuel.
Try speeding up a little and match the lorry drivers speed to maintain the gap, especially a uk lorry as most 'professional' drivers do not want points on their licences as it is their livelihood. Large lorries are restricted to 56 mph iirc. Either that or if you can change lanes and let them past, do so. |

Theres a lot of bollocks talked about speedometers in cars. Most of it parroted here.
Perhaps in older cars where the mechanism is worn it might be a little out. And that margin could be under or over. This is part of the reason that most police forces/safety camera partnerships won't look to prosecute unless you're doing 10%+2 over the limit. (Unless you're in a school area or other high risk areas)
Bur a brand new car would not be fitted with a speedo that was made so badly that right out of the box it was 10% out. Particularly as they are electronic rather than cable driven these days.
And and satnav device is only as accurate as it's refresh rate and the number of satellites it has a fix on. And it will be as useful as a defence in court as tits on a fish.
So to the OP, you could have sped up a touch with little worry. Plus if the truck was that close you couldn't have been done by a static camera anyway as they wouldn't have been able to determine who triggered it. If it was average speed cameras then again you can safely travel faster as the figure it prosecutes on is an average above 50, and youd have to travel faster than that to have that average.
Just remember truck drivers are just like any other road user. Locked in their own safe bubble and on their own schedule that can't be messed with. |

Speedos in modern cars are still only a gauge as to actual speed. The have to account for tear wear etc etc.
Modern sat navs such as Tom Tom are far more accurate than the speedo of a vehicle you could buy today, including the Jaguar F type I picked up yesterday! |

I was just about to pick up this point too. When you fit new tyres your speedometer will actually be more accurate than when your tyres are worn (larger circumference when new). Add to the fact that each manufacturers idea of a certain size is slightly different to the other it's luck of the drawer whether your speedo is reading spot on or not! |

Don't a lot of cyclist put themselves in this position of being on the inside of the driver on a left hand turn by riding up the inside when the other drivers are already stationary?
I know not all drivers start indicating until they start to move off from lights etc. which will add to the problem, but if you as a cyclist put yourself into the blindspot of a large vehicle, it is asking for trouble whether he is indicating or not. If you can't put yourself into a position to be seen by the driver it must be safer to wait behind then in a position where you can be seen by anyone who could effect you.
You see lots of cyclists coming up the inside of vehicles at left turns forcing the drivers not to be able to pull away and turn left, this in turn holds everyone else behind up. In a nutshell most cyclists don't mind holing everyone else up but will not wait or be held up for anyone else. Cyclists don't seem to mind squeezing up very small gaps at lights but expect to be given half a lane when traffic starts to flow again. If after overtaking a cyclists I get stopped at a red light I will get as close to the lefthand kerb to prevent them getting up my nearside.
I particularly dislike moped riders who will come up between lanes at lights and then angle in front of the first vehicle, before struggling to get to 30 mph when the lights change, dicks. |

Ok, close but not quite true. Those of you unfortunate enough to be following an Asda or Tesco artic will find they only do 50 - their limiters are set at that as its company policy to save fuel. DHL have theirs set at 53. Mine is set at 89 km/h just to cause confusion. The artics overtaking you at 65 usually have foreign plates lol.
As for tailgating, it's a big no no in my book whatever I'm driving. However, it would be lovely if all car driver drove at 60 so that I didn't have to try and overtake them when they are doing 53 on the motorway

Trouble is, I have 8 drive tyres on my lorry and in the snow it grips wonderfully for traction, ice isn't so good however. But I always try and drive on the less clear portion of road to grind the salt in as it aids the snow melt - as do a lot of lorry drivers |

Erm no, and neither do cyclists or moped drivers. A high proportion of which seem quite happy to slow others down after undertaking them a lights... So if I can I will position my vehicle to stop them doing it. If I wanted to travel a cycling speed I'd be on my cycle. |

Fair one & some valid points. Were all responsible for our driving and how it affects others.
The fact is though, is that a large vehicle does a lot more damage than a moped when driven poorly.
We should all drive defensively on routine journeys and work matters. Aggresive driving is only justified by a certain few?

New cars speedos are calibrated to 4mph below the stated speed on the display. Speed cameras in ALL locations don't even trigger until you hit 10% + 2mph over the limit. Can you imagine the uproar if news cars were calibrated to the exact speed on the display and speed cameras fired at 1mph over that speed there'd be hardly any drivers on the road.
If anyone doesn't believe this then head for your nearest speed camera and go through at 10% over the limit-according to your speedometer and see what happens Nothing will! |

The 10% +2 it a guideline that the police in general choose to use. The law however is if you go above the speed limit, even by 1mph, you could be fined and you have no grounds to protest against it. It is up to the local plod what speed they set their cameras at before they trigger.
Also If you went through a camera at say 33mph on your speedo it's likely you're only doing 31 anyway due to the numerous factors. Dare you to go through at 20% on your speedo as that should see you going through at a true 33mph+. Report back your findings |

Not true, my brand new motorcycle was 10mph out at 50mph it was reading 40, I did kick up a fuss about that, and had to have photo's from a rolling road tune up before it got replaced the replacement was only 4mph under at 50, but still not accurate. They will probably never read true as the risk of a law suit from under reporting is vastly greater than over reporting.
Still is annoying and very dangerous to tailgate in any vehicle you never know if the vehicle in front knows where it is going or will spot a last minute sign and slow down / turn off.. or the driver could just sneeze! |

I rarely see this outside of the motorway where car drivers have a whole extra lane to use. The only people who are massively inconvenianced by an overtaking lorry are coach drivers being as the limiter allows an extra 6 1/2 miles an hour. Even then it's no great hardship, unless of course the lorry in question takes 20 minutes to complete his manouvere. |

I can't believe the number of people saying that we should speed up to accommodate the lorry driver! If I want to do 50mph through roadwork's as the signs say, nothing is going to make me speed up!
If lorry drivers are that tight for time, is that really a reason to make others drive irresponsibly? Well, I don't think so. "Professionals" drivers should know better than to push a much smaller vehicle and intimidate in that way. But I am not surprised!
100 miles travelled at 59mph is slower than travelling the same distance at 62mph by only about 5 minutes, so why the rush to overtake and effectively close down both carriageways when duelled? Why drive that badly that tailgating is deemed necessary? I can't believe it is that time critical. I think it is more like a lot of drivers who just want to go as fast as they can! |

IF the inside lane was the hard shoulder I generally ride my motorcycle down the outside lane, through the entire roadworks area, this is due to debris and poor road surface on the hard shoulder. I do though where possible even when not in contraflow areas, give way to trucks especially on the approach to hills etc. as I appreciate what a missed gear change can cost. |

It not an individuals perogrative or right to police another individuals intention to drive at, above or below the speed limit.
I have driven many vehicles from motor bikes to £50,000+ luxury vehicles. None of these had accurate speedos (although the Lexus came the closest) my current everyday vehicle reads 5% slower than the correct speed.
Two days ago a man in his late 50's steadfastly refused to move out of the middle lane of the M3 after driving at 53mph for many miles causing congestion and major tailbacks. For some reason he seemed to take delight in holding me up even more than others. As I finally got to overtake him he then moved out into the right hand lane of the motorway and continued to hold up traffic for many more miles. (I watched in my mirror as I drove away) sheer bloodimindedness by him could have caused a major accident when he could quite easily have and definitely should have moved over into the left lane of the motorway. |

Hello all,
there are no valid reasons for 'tailgating', particularly as the OP was in a restricted speed area; accuracy of speedometers is irrelevant.
That said it would be nice if drivers did consider others that use the road and do what they can to allow free passage for all when possible.
The Highway code says you should assist others who are overtaking you, slowing down, if necessary. How often does that happen?

100 miles travelled at 59mph is slower than travelling the same distance at 62mph by only about 5 minutes, so why the rush to overtake and effectively close down both carriageways when duelled? Why drive that badly that tailgating is deemed necessary? I can't believe it is that time critical. I think it is more like a lot of drivers who just want to go as fast as they can!" not asking middle lane hoggers to speed up just pull over to the nearside lane when it is free, not to much to ask |

Don't even start on middle lane drivers !!!! My pet hate!!! There should be a law introduced allowing anyone sitting in the middle lane with no reason to be there to be shot. We have a network of 3 lane motorways being turned in to dual carriageways by these idiots !
Ok calm down CALM DOWN !! |

this happened after my incident with the
trucker after leaving the roadworks
started to accelerate but on my right in middle lane a BMW318D not speeding up so i had to go on outside lane at 70 to get past it and the trucks on inside lane
then come back into the correct lane. |

The traffic police have been told to prosecute "middle laners" but unfortunately as there are very few traffic cops and 50% of drivers do it nothing will ever change !! |

"why do car drivers feel the need 2 overtake a cyclist an at a junction
almost costing an accident
Why do "some" cyclists feel the need to run red lights at junctions causing the same problem as above??? "
Why do cyclists ride on the pavements and risk serious injury or death to the pedestrians that actually have a right to be there.
Why do cyclists insist on riding across pedestrian crossings when there is no obligation for the motorist to stop because a cyclist is not a pedestrian! |

I don't. Research the different types of crossings and failing to comply with the lights.....irrespective of pedestrian or bike. |
