Read with dismay but not total shock about money left in a will by a lady allegedly for the government to use as they see fit so what did the corrupt coalition do did they use it to reduce deficit NO. Did they put it to help folk in need NO.
Did they use it to help anyone NO.
They kept and split it and put in their own party funds. I think it sums up the politicians and is totally disgusting.

Way over Yonder, that's where I'm bound |
As they saw fit. It probably wasn't her intention that the money be used in that way but her instructions weren't clear. Interesting to find out if it applied to any government and if she had faith in any government to use the money for good. |

According to one press report..
The bequest of £520,000 in total made Ms Joan L B E*****s the biggest individual donor to both parties between April and June.
Her inclusion in the latest donations list sparked intrigue among pundits who wondered whether she had been won over by the coalition's record.
But it is understood the shared donation came about because she had specified the money should go to "whoever was the party of government of the day".
After some initial confusion about how to proceed given the Tories and Lib Dems currently share power, it was decided to divide the money.
The sum was split based on each party's number of ministers and MPs, with the Tories pocketing £420,576 and the Lib Dems £99,423.
No other details about Ms Edwards are currently known, although reports indicate she was not active politically during her lifetime.

Thank you. It was her money and she seems to have thought this was a good enough use for it. |

The donation was to a party not the government therefore it went to the party and not to a "cause"
Name a political party that's received a donation and then ploughed it into a cause? It's not what they do. They use the money to get elected and then go from there. If she'd donated it to "the government" to do good works then there would be an issue |

That is all to the good then, isn't it? They didn't have to do that, but decided to stop those like yourself with a political axe to grind. I am very pleased to see the measured arguments on here that point out the facts and do not just bash either or any party just because they can! |

Be honest with yourself, if it had happened under Labour's tenure how would you have reacted..?

"Does not matter which political party snatched the dosh lsbour yory libs or ukip it would still be wrong."
Agreed, the will was not precise in that it said any particular party..
guessing that when it was written there wasn't the coalition in place..
to split it looks shabby, as would it also look where it one particular party under the same circumstances.. |

I mean it’s not like this dear old benevolent lady left all her money to a cat shelter when we’ve got all these starving people queuing up at food banks……
I wonder what sort of public outcry a gesture like that would have created amongst the easily offended politically sensitive moralists of this great nation…. Eh?
I'd wager much less...!!! |

in theory it is the executor of the will who had to go by what was the "letter" of the will...
maybe this will serve for other people to check what are in their wills to see if it could be misconstrued.....

I imagine if she'd left her money to a cats-home the would a furore of protest from all those easily offended politically sensitive moralists of this great nation defending her right to make a bequest wherever she felt her money would benefit a cause of her own choosing….!.

This is all very interesting and I do enjoy a good "outraged" story. Out of interest if I give £5 donation to a political party would you be outraged if they spent it on their admin? Or do they have to buy coffee for a homeless person? She donated (via her will) money to a non specific political party. It was complicated by the fact she wasn't specific about who she gave it to. Neither she nor they have done anything immoral or illegal. |
