Did anyone watch this last night? If not it's worth a watch just for the attitude to work.
No idle chatter until lunchtime. Better productivity and fewer hours worked.
There is a real understanding that long hours does not lead to more or better work. |

I worked in Germany a few times and loved the attitude. Being told I needed to stop work I had done enough was a real eye opener |

Makes sense. 10 hours of dossing at work can never equal 5 hours of graft. Biggest mistake British car industry ever made was replacing piece work with guaranteed pay even if no cars were produced. Recipe for disaster and that's exactly what happened. |

Yet we don't seem to want to learn from a successful business and economic model, preferring a system of presenteeism and social life at work mixed with bursts of hard work.
I always modelled sensible working hours and told people to go home when I was in charge. Happy staff who have wanted to work for me again and again. |

I always did similar, always led from front, always did more. Was the first to send people home, flowers for wives birthday and when a baby was born. I always pushed myself to the max. I still do it now, if you do not push your own boundaries to never truly know where they are.
The Germans laugh at our attitude |

Now here's a thought.
Had Hitler won the war would most of us be driving round in Beemers, Audi's and Mercs by now. On quieter roads.
Talking different but could be worse, their porn was way ahead of ours too.
Cue Kraftwerk.
Yes, i know Cleopatra had a large hooter.

"Cheaper than transporting all the equipment which costs a fortune and liked to keep it British made as it's a UK icon brand. "
I don't doubt those are consideration but would that be enough if the build quality is shite and industrial relations are in the lavvy?

Doubt what you like _nny but the mini only made money when BMW took it over. It had lost money in every single year. That's why Ford were amazed at the cheap price. Eventually it was found out. Read the history of the British car industry. I "worked" at Longbridge on the production line in the days of Red Robbo. It was a complete dosshouse. What's your first hand experience? |

"If things are so much better over there, why does BMW make the Mini in the UK?"
Predominantly politics. But the newer platforms will be developed to make it multi plant viable. The same as the other BMW models are. |

There are some idle feckless Germans. There are some ultra efficient British people. All this programme did was reinforce stereotypes. There is no such thing as a British or German attitude to work. We are all individuals.........
Alright who is going to be the first to say "I'm not!"? |

What's a 'platform' in this context? |

As in a common design and engineering. To allow them to assemble different models on the same production line. |

Would love that as me thinks given the lazy bitches in my companies customer services team, they would be working for a very long time before they got told they could have a break |

It's the same with the Bentley GT. They wanted to keep it for now at least in Blighty.
The publicity stunt of a hand built, hand crafted car by experienced hands and a multi skilled workforce.
The car is designed on the VW Phaeton, the parts are modelled on Audi,Seat,Skoda ranges. The front consoles for example are modelled on the Lupo. I kid you not. Now of course they are not plastic (well underneath is) they are beautiful wooden veneer. It's really like polishing a turd though, an incredible looking car,a great engine but very cheap interior parts that are really one fix items that break upon removal. The company puts quantity above quality and fudges figures since drafting in unskilled yet yes man managerial infrastructure and consequently their ideology of deskilling the workforce by putting people on repetitive tact time processes from people from no skilled background that in fairness are kean but don't have the finesse of a skilled person.
It's a VW with a Bentley badge and a whopping 60k mark up. Loads of call backs on issues, some of which still bite them on the arse. It's losing its exclusiveness on the brand, the workforce and many owners know it. A crying shame for short term gain.

Although I don't necessarily agree with all of the points you make, I understand where you are coming from.
That is automotive volume production for you. Bentley are in this market now and the pressure/ focus is on hitting the numbers. |

Haven't watched this yet, but intend to.
Couple of Brit v German points.
We found that the Germans tended to over-engineer kit. Whereas we built stuff to fulfil the purpose.
For example, I was on a RN minesweeper a few years ago and the crew said if they picked up a WW2 British sea mine there was a 90% it would not go bang. However, if it was a German sea mine there was a 90% chance it would go bang.
I think the main difference between Brit and German Companies is that the Brit Companies look for quick profit and little long term investment. Whereas the Germans look at long term investment and return.
British workers can be fantastic, look at Nissan, but often British management is crap.

Morning Onny.
Shite build quality, and industrial relations based on Blitzkrieg were the norm in the 70's British car industry, and if British industry still had the same attitude today the Mini would almost certainly be built in Munich.
The British car industry of 2013 has seriously upped its game both in quality and industrial relations and added to the "Iconic British Brand" it makes perfect sense for BMW to build it in Oxford.
I didn't see the program last night but be careful thinking that all in Germany is sunshine and roses.
Germany also has a benefit culture and as we know from our business there getting decent workers to turn up for 12 euro and hour (almost double UK minimum wage) is getting more and more difficult. I wish I had a fiver for everyone who turned up, worked for 3 or 4 days then went on a permanent "sickie"
On the other side of the coin there are the Meisters (masters) who have completed all the qualifications as builders, plumbers, roofers, mechanics, Etc. but then think that they qualify to be millionaires inside a year. For example we were quoted over 3 grand to fit 6 new ridge tiles and a bit of pointing which even he admitted was only one days work

Are you posting that to try and be funny or to provoke a reaction?
Because that is in seriously bad taste. |

Ooooh get you! Lmao.
I get tired of explaining things to thicko's on here.
This thread is about how work practices in Germany give greater freedom & flexibility, i.e in Germany work gives you freedom or, auf deutsch, Arbeit macht frei.
My post was meant to be ironic as the forums are meant to be fun.
So go and create a war somewhere else, prof (lmao) |
