I think most of these type of things will come under airsoft guns now as that is what the sport is called that uses them. Google airsoft guns and I'm sure you'll find something your son will like.
P.S. don't forget safety glasses! |

You can get them from shops we have DAI by us that sells them. There are restrictions on the sale of air rifles/guns but look up field sports shops sure you find one. Even thou Gat guns are very low powered caution is needed. Personally I take him clay shooting great morning out and a true father/ child event. Whatever you decide to do hope you have a great time. |

Gat's are getting pricey now due to collectors.
Personally I'd consider getting him something like a Crossman CO2 powered pistol. Plenty available that shoot either pellets or BB's. Some decent replicas that even have blowback action.
At the end of the day the Gat was never a good pistol when new, not accurate and bugger all power, if you want your son to enjoy shooting get him something he can learn to actually shoot accurately with or he'll get frustrated and either give up and start messing about and have an accident/incident.
Also, be aware that the law has changed with regards to internet sales of air-guns. You can no longer have them delivered to your home, they must go to a registered firearms dealer who may charge you for the service.
Any questions feel free to ask. |

My brother had one many years ago but got rid after shooting my mom between the eyes (accident)
It traumatised him bigtime.
Years later when working with the disabled. we were targeted by arsoles using them and were in a shoot out until two police gun units and dogs turned up.
My opinion only but no guns should be sold.....ever |

I thought the GAT's were bloody useless. I remember having to push the old .177 pellets down the barrel with a knitting needle then re loading them before they would fire. I'd put my bare arse to it at 10 feet in full confidence that it would either miss or I wouldn't notice if it hit. Went on to a Webley Junior which was much better and a friend had a BSA (may have been a Scorpion) which was awesome. |

Now then the gat was out and about with webleys that broke the barrel to push the spring back . The gat as I recall you pushed the barrel in and when you pulled the trigger the barrel flew forward via the weak spring son launching the dart or whatever you put in it. If you had one then it was a case of .. Oh dear and the poor lad probably rode a Honda Melody moped rather than the Yamaha FS1E lol |

The only gun I owned which beat it was a Weirauch HW35 - now that really was something else!

"I recently allowed my son to get behind my .338!
THAT'S a gun every boy should fire if they're interested in shooting...lolI like his shoulders where there suppose to be "
It's not too bad when fired from prone, besides I have a huge muzzle break on mine. The .223 is good fun too and far less recoil, you just can't quite reach out anywhere near as far with it..
Why don't you look into something like a 410 for the lad, get him used to shotguns. |

I have an HW80 with the Venom spring and buffer upgrade. If memory serves at the time I got mine it was/is the most powerful break-barrel, spring operated air rifle you could buy (you actually need an FAC to legally own it). It's rated at 27ftlbs. Great gun for rats, rabbits and pigeons. It had an Ox suppressor on it but I didn't like the way it balanced with it on so i took it off. |

They stopped making then about 10 years ago. You can get much better ones out now that only fire plastic bb's or even a rifle for about £40. |

All my kids shoot to some degree. My eldest daughter and my son are both pretty good hunters, my middle daughter likes target shooting and archery.
They also enjoy going to indoor ranges when we're in the States and they get to fire handguns, which is something they don't really have the opportunity in this country. |

A Ratbuster is a good choice for a first pistol. CO2 capsules, 6ftlb, and LOUD! The kids love it when it's loud. You can always turn it into a rifle at a later date, and it is possible (but I won't say how), to turn the power up. |

"check the laws they have all changed , no one can own one unless they are 18 .and it is illegal to give or make a present
of one to anyone under 18
"
You are quite right, and the carrying and actual use of them has been somewhat restricted as well. Take him to a local club, and they usually have a few you can try out to get an idea as to what sort you like. A rifle is a much better idea, as there is a lot less chance of him sneaking it out of the house. My lads have been shooting at clubs with me since they were 6 or 7 and they really understand the safety issues. I would let them use my compound bow as well, but they are not tall enough yet. |

In some cases they already are. Any rifle that produces ove 12ftlbs requires a firearms certificate. Same goes for a pistol over 8ftlbs.
Trouble is, they're easy to modify to produce above those pressures, so plenty of people have technically illegal air-weapons. |

"What's the latest law on when the age of a gun classes it as antique, and falls outside normal licensing rules?"
I'm not sure with regards to air-weapons. But with rifles and handguns there's something called the historic cartridge regulations.
Still very much a grey area regarding handguns though and as far as I know you're only allowed to own muzzle loading-black powder examples (I could be slightly wrong though as I've not checked). |

Ok, just checked.
Handguns made prior to 1919 who's ammunition is no longer widely available. The must also be stored at a registered secure location.
Weapons used by hunters for humane dispatch which are limited to two shots.
Guns of historic interest with current calibres (again, must be stored in a secure location).
Pistols for personal protection. This applies to prominent figures and retired police officers in Northern Ireland.

I had a hw90 and got a pump to charge the gas ram.reckon it was 20+ft/lb .was a brilliant hunting gun as could use really heavy pellets. |

Did you ever try 'Ballistic' pellets? They had a copper ball-bearing inside them, the penetration was unreal for an air rifle pellet. They were banned pretty quickly too...lol
Another good one for shooting rats were Devastators, they had a steel point inside a concave tip and would mushroom on impact, again, they were banned too so I mainly use Prometheus or Ely Wasps in my air guns now. |

Depends on the age, calibre and operation. But if its able to shoot you need either a licence or it must be stored at a designated secure location.
If you want to pm me the details I'll remove my filters and I can check for you. |

I've never had a problem with the Prometheus being erratic I did have to make quite a few dope corrections on my scope though when I first started using them. |

Not everyone who owns an air rifle/pistol is a mindless thug or has no concept of how dangerous they are. I understand and fully support people who don't like guns if any description and in some instances I agree that some people shouldn't be allowed within 50ft of one. But the attitude that anyone who owns a gun is either going to hurt themselves or start shooting innocent people and their pets is ridiculous.
With proper training and a healthy respect for the equipment shooting, whether is hunting, clay pigeon or target shooting, is a very rewarding pastime. |

used to do a lot of airgun shooting but now use shotguns
forget the gat gun he will get bored and frustrated at having to shoot off target to hit the target if you know what I mean
If it was me I would Google bob Dunkley firearms which I believe is up your way and look at woodview centre which is hft hunter field target, basically its outdoor ranges set up look as if your shooting in the country but using paper/metal targets.
Take him along there and if he enjoys it which I am sure he will you can look into a second-hand air rifle which will be both accurate and 100x more fun than the gat
And you get access to safe tuition and inter club competitions
pm me if you need more help |

Lol, no worries.
Gats were always terrible, we used to say that the safest place to stand when someone was shooting one was directly infront of the barrel! Although I wouldn't fancy getting hit by the barrel as it came flying forward!
Just make sure you drill the basics into him.
Never carry it loaded, keep his finger off the trigger until he's ready to fire. Keep the barrel facing down-range. Never point it at people or animals. Never hand it to someone else loaded and never use it un-supervised.
I'm sure he'll get a lot of enjoyment from it, I know I did (and still do) and so do my children. |
