I wonder if he got his idea from drawing little dots on a balloon then blowing it up and watching the dots move away from each other and then it burst and his wife said 'ooh! That was a big bang!' and then he got the idea.

Perhaps he'd made a birthday pie but it exploded and when his wife heard it and exclaimed 'ooh! that was a big bang!' he thought of the bits of pie flying majestically through the air of the kitchen and got the idea from that.
