It seems this is only when the police determine that people have been shoplifting food because of hunger and poverty.

That's a poor excuse if they weren't in the pub all the time they could afford food or if they got off their lazy backsides I'm not able to work at the minute but bills and food come 1st

Also to clarify that only 7 have been given out (even according to daily mail).

Can't wait for the usual suspects appearing suggesting we should birch shoplifters because they didn't have that in their day.....

Maybe they aren't in the pub all day and after there bills are paid don't have anything left to buy food.

I think it's a good idea if they genuinely need help

How do you know they were in the pub all the time? And how do you know that they're not in the same position as you and not able to work?

Not everyone is entitled to benefits and even those who are don't get a payment as soon as they make a claim - it can take weeks.

How does it work? Is it like a sliding scale?

So say if you were a crappy pick pocket you would get some FreezerLand's own brand Fishy fingers but if you were a successful diamond thief you would get like a really nice McDonald's?

As only 7 have been given out and the police are doing it based on needs, I suspect they're not handing food over to those "staggering out of pubs"

Yeah well it's cheaper than paying for four star prison hotel holidays if there's a chance it will persuade them not to go further down the criminal path

It was a daft idea which didn't last long and proves that Local Crime Commissioners (or whatever they're called) have at least one good use.
