Way over Yonder, that's where I'm bound |
Greater Manchester Police have released recordings of the emergency calls they have received. These include:
Maggots in the bin;
Stolen parking space;
Hamster stuck under a floorboard and;
my all time favourite...
Toddler's breakfast on the floor.

"There was an article in the local paper saying someone from locally had contacted police to say they had a huge rabbit(the animal) wrecking their garden"
I wonder is the police would attend if it just happened to be the other sort of rabbit? |

Over the rainbow, under the bridge |
Bizarre what people consider an emergency. I called the 101 number when I had a confrontation with my neighbour who has caused property damage. They came out the next day and spoke to the neighbour. Result being some of the damage put right. Now just have to get them to do the rest. |

here are a few more
Can you come and unblock my toilet? The most stupid 999 calls made over Christmas holidays
Woman also called ambulance service to complain that she had a cotton bud stuck in her ear
Male caller dialled 999 because he had toothache
Dog in distress led to urgent request for paramedics

Chuck the idiots in a cell or charge them money to cover the cost of their idiocrisy.
The people that need to learn from stories like this will just think it's funny. Bet they will bitch up a storm when the police aren't there when they need them.
I appreciate the police, they were very helpful for me a while back. And I told them so. |

It'd be educational to see a breakdown by age, gender and country of origin of who made the calls. |

Erm,

the bird may have been in distress..
some birds do get caught up in fishing lines etc..
unlikely that the call was to a perfectly 'normal' bird doing err bird type things..
humanitarian service.. |

I wouldn't think 999 for that. I'd call the RSPCA. What's your lot going to do with the bird? |

You would be pretty pissed of if you rang the police to report there was a burglar in your house to be told sorry all are officers are busy with a distressed bird in a tree. It's not really an emergency is it?
The big problem is now days police are expected to deal with every little thing. There is a class of person who is given a house, money and their children educated by the local council and in their eyes any other problem should be delt with by the emergency services... And before you say it I know not every person on benefits is this way. |

Would agree with who to call, not everyone does think that way though..
RSPCA's first call for anything they cant reach etc will be Fire service..

I dealt with a case where she had phoned the police because she had a leak.... Had another one where she was a persistent caller and was fined...it really is a Peter cry wolf situation as when there will be a genuine emergency it might not be taken seriously |

Story in the metro a few weeks ago, man called the police to ask them to arrest a prostitute he had booked because when she turned up he thought she was ugly and not as she had described herself so wanted her arrested under the trades description act, was quite forceful in his protest apparently, until the policeman pointed out that he could be arrested for soliciting! |

I saw that!
I was actually laughing so much I had tears running down my face. .I mean really.
I just absolutely pissed myself when I read that.

The trouble is if a police officer rushing to her has an accident it will be his/her fault for rushing to a known time waster. But if they don't hurry and she needs them that will be their fault as well... |

I'm pretty sure the police prioritise calls, it's why they carry radios. I wouldn't say they get called out for everything, they will sometimes standby and watch people drowning as they have been told not to attempt rescues in water... some still do attempt to rescue people and it's this type of copper we could do with a lot more of. the others stand and wait for their lesser paid colleagues in the Fire Brigade to turn up. I don't understand the police being paid more than the fire brigade.
Are more nuisance calls made by benefits claimants? You may be right as the mentally ill do find it harder holding down a job, but I'm sure people with jobs do it too. |

they don't exactly 'stand by and watch people drown'..
knowing that you are not equipped or trained to carry out a rescue and then not escalating a situation by diving in and getting in trouble is fine by me..
having to carry out further rescue's due to folk getting in trouble trying to help often hinders the situation, increases the resources and adds to the risks for those carrying out the rescue..

They used to be trained for it though...
Now they can't do it because they don't have they training for it and for 'health and Safety' There's me thinking the police were there for our safety and protection.
What about health and safety when they are flying around with blue lights on, there are quite frequent accidents and innocent people are killed this way. |

I'm not saying people with jobs don't make stupid calls. What I a mm saying is that now there is a class of person who can't make a decision for themselves As soon as it is difficult they just call 999. You only have to read the papers to read examples every day.. My 12 year old daughter weights 20... It's not my fault it's the tv adverts... etc.
If you don't understand why police are paid more than firemen (women) you really don't understand either jobs...
And yes police do carry radios but it has just come out that police are to be trained in political jargon Apparently the public don't like police officers who say no. So instead they have to say. I'll tell you what I can do for you is..... Instead of no I can't do that.. |

not sure they have ever been trained for the role tbh..
its only post the fatality in GMC where a fire officer died carrying out an attempted rescue that the fire service has rolled out training for their personnel..
in any case roles change..
not sure what point your trying to make about training and H&S..?
would you expect anyone to carry out something with the potential for serious injury and death without training..?

I understand that people whom work for the fire brigade risk their lives on a lot of occasions and deserve to be paid on a parity with the police. Just because they are not as visable, when the shit really hits the fan they are there to try and clean up the mess just as the police are. Not all police are dealing with armed criminals everyday but all firepeeps as the police could be called to a life or death situation at any time.
In my opinion they deserve an equal pay structure. |

I don't think it's about stupidity. 118 calls cost money and that'll put some people off.
Maybe charging for 999 calls would reduce the number of stupid or malicious calls. |

That would prevent proper emergency calls getting through from skint people though.
The calls come into a switchboard, I may be wrong, but I would have thought they can be cut off in an instant if another call is showing on the system and there are no available operatives to take the call.
We've all seen the TV shows where they try and explain to really stupid people to sort their own personal 'emergency' out as it is neither a medical or life and death situation, I don't think they'd be doing that if another call was waiting. There is a poster Matrix above who seems to work in one of these emergency centres maybe they can enlighten us. |

The way police and fire crews work is very different. I agree fire crew should be paid more but not the same as police.
Fire crews work less hours and have a lot more down time during their shifts. They are able to have a second job with very little restriction.
Police have to know civil and criminal law, be social workers, marriage guidance councillors, deal with riots. Report crime, deal with accidents, missing persons, deliver death messages in between answering 999 calls...
I don't think any of the emergency services, nurses get paid enough. |

I haven't seen a list of the calls made to police for a while, but having hung around these forums for thsle last few months, it wouldn't surprise me if the following were in there:
"I'm not getting any replies to my messages - why can't women at least say 'thanks'. It's rude."
"Can an officer check my profile? I've been on Fabs a whole hour and haven't had any luck yet"
;) |

The police don't know the Law that's what solicitors are for... There are videos online where people are asking officers to state what law they are arresting them for and they don't know.
They arrest people and then find out what the law is. Hence the massive use of the public order offence line. And when they haven't got a case they are released without charge, quite a lot.
The fire brigade go to all the worst accidents, especially the ones where any cargo is considered to dangerous for the police to go near. Rescues too where people are stuck or in a dangerous place, because the police don't go there... All whilst answering 999 call for fires. Who try to put out the fires at riots, oh yeah the fire brigade. Social workers and marriage guidance, what you mean calming people down, when they can't be bothered with the paperwork for an arrest. If they needed them for their performance targets they would be arrested.
When my ex woke up one morning and decided to throw things around the house and create havoc, who did the police arrive and arrest, take to the other side of the city and release withing 5 minutes, yep, the half of the partnership that was trying to get ready and fook off to work. Councillors my arse. |

Police hours are 37-40 per week, Fire service is 48 hrs for station based personnel..
its the shift system which allows both sets of workers to have other employment, if they feel they want or need to..
as for law etc, Fire service also need to be au fait with current legislation regarding fire safety etc..
