Can anyone recommend a good compact camera? I have a nikon p50 at the moment it's time to upgrade for my hols

My budget is £250 but will stretch at £300. A good optical zoom would be an advantage. Ideally something somebody has used, and can categorically say... Yeah this takes sharp pictures

Pretty much any Canon Powershot in that price range will do the job.

Samsung nx1000 comes with an 3x zoom lens but if need more can add another lens.

Very good pictures and sharp, plus a RAW mode so you can edit without jpeg artifacts.

If macro mode is what you want its not the best, need different lens.

Also have a Sony hx200v great superzoom camera but pictures are affected by noise reduction so things look ok but if you zoom and crop quality suffers. Would not buy another sony.

Have samples many safe for work pictures on my flickr account paulfun38

Probably a bit over budget but a Canon G15 gives almost SLR results, brilliant camera, wouldn't be without mine.

The TZ40 is an impressive advanced compact, I use it all day at work.

I would also recommend the Lumix G3 which I use personally.

I've used a couple of Panasonic's and don't like the look of the images at all, way too 'processed', compared to even cheap Canon's.

Though this could be due to the fact that I'm used to the look of Canon images having used their SLR/DSLR's for 20 years or so.

The Nikon D3200

I just got the D3100 and it's a feckin great camera that also does film. So many digital filters and shooting options and it has a great battery life.

The D3200 should only be around £300 at most now
