Off to join the gym this week. Now I've lost nearly a stone in weight it's time to get fit again. Not fussed about muscle definition just want to burn fat for now to assist with further weight loss.

So does anyone know what machines are best for that? Treadmill, rower, bike, cross trainer?? Am I best to just do one or go from one to another for shorter bursts??

No offence and can understand why people go to the gym but you can burn fat and calories for free !! Either go swimming which is great for working every muscle in your body or go for a run !

Running burns fat and calories well quick So maybe swim one day run the next ??

Just a suggestion

Depends what kit they actually have at the gym you're going to use. If they have a competent personal trainer there, normally they will give you an assessment on your first visit and, if you tell them your objective for going there, they'll tell you what kind of exercises you need to do, and on which pieces of equipment.

ted.

good luck on your training regime , take it slowly ...warm up / stretch before you begin ...eat healthily , drink lots of water ....halve your alcohol tobaco intake ( if any at all ) ...always stop if you feel pain ...sissy squats without weight to keep that spanking ass in tip top condition !...oh and post regular progress pictures ( purely for research purposes ) ...best wishes

Running is meant to be one of the best for burning off the cals but it is also high impact so the body will take a bit of a pounding. Swimming, cycling, vario/cross trainers are all low impact but you need to put a little more effort in to burn the same amount of cals. To fat burn I think you want to hold your heart rate steady at about 60% to 70% of your max heart rate. Your max heart rate is roughly 220 - your age. So whatever exercise you're doing if you hold your heart rate steady there you'll be losing fat

Someone mentioned sissy squats, I prefer to call them air squats and these are great to do IMO. They'll keep that arse of yours nice n firm but also raise the heart rate. I really like the ergo (rower) machines too. Get someone to show you how to use it properly so your stroke technique is right (I'm sure those that have met you will say it is perfect already!) and off you go. This machine works so many muscles it is great. Try to keep your back as straight as possible if you do use it, and only hunch a bit when coming right back on the return stroke.

If you are joining a gym and they do free classes you could also mix it up by doing some circuit training. This will not only keep you fit / burn fat but it will also lightly tone the muscles. You will not get 'massive' from this at all.

I've just lost two and half stone and before I always run or did spinning but building muscle helps with burning fat, you can work out outdoor things like pressups and squads and use benches for arms and stuff are great short sprints with hill sprints are amazing for bottom and tummy as you have to use all the muscles there

Well done on your weight lost

I'm not a personal trainer but giving Hand Jobs works your biceps and triceps!

Seriously, from what I can make out from your OP hottbotts, I would suggest swimming and er ahem..the breaststroke is best.

Mix it up on various machines if you not bothered about developing any particualr muscle group. As others have said swimming is the best all round,

Just be aware that no matter what exercise you do it will develop muscle and that weighs heavier than fat, My advice is to take lots of measurements of your body and notice how your shape changes

I did a lot of running before but on the treadmill I don't like road running getting heckled by the chavvy tossers standing on street corners. And I know swimming is great but the pool near me is a fun pool and is always packed solid in the holidays and shut a lot of the time for schools, it is included as part of my gym membership tho so I can use it if I want to. The membership is only £5 a week for gym/pool/exercise classes

Rowing without doubt will burn more fat, just be careful about your posture and use both legs, armS and back in one fluid motion. Dont race but gradually increase the pace to a rhythem that you can sustain for say 20 minutes.

If you want to work more on your legs, use the cross trainer.. you can adjust your position on this - not everyone does, but you can do a slight squat to change muscle groups rather than standing (running) upright and 'running'.

For arms, a simple dumbell curl will work, add twists, curl up under your arm pit or if on a bench, put you knee on it abd oposite hand for stability and extend your dumbell arm toward your hip (working the back of your arm).

But the rower will use all of thes muscles very well. Again adjust your grip (over and under for a period) and work differnt arm muscle groups. Most importantly - back straight at all times

to add, I hte running machines, they impact the joints so heavily and imo can do more long term damage than they are worth. Espectailly if you havent got the absolute correct footware - say for over or under pronation

High intensity training is the best for fat loss as is the diet. Diet is key..but shorter bursts during regular running will burn the fat..

Your body will have to release energy for your exercise and will use the 'excess' fat to give energy.
