health and smoking

Prompted by news in local paper where patients in hospital including folk on drips standing at entrances of hospitals smoking this got me thinking.
Fact i am non smoker is irrelevant but in my view if you need to be in hospital in first place you clearly ill. For this example lets say problem is breathing or heart or lung problems if the peopleconcerned are not clever enough to cotton on to fact smoking is not helping then they should be told quite clearly if you cannot go without smoking whilst in hospital stay treatment should not be given as plenty who care about their health especially if ill should be given priority controversial yes and i expect criticism but hey ho.
Its nowt to do with saving money this is about health of those who are not prepared to improve chances of health.
As for those who will say its an adfiction maybe but it is a lifestyle choice millions of folk stop smoking so no excuse in my eyes.
In this clip a blok on drip who looks gaunt and very unwell smoking awful sight seeing him ill then add to it the damage by smoking.
Hospitals shoild have total ban as i assumed they had of smoking in hospital grounds but end of day individuals are respondible and selfish. |

got to love the smoking police.
if you have got to use a phone perhaps you shouldnt get treatment either as your microwaving your brain or a multitude of other things people do im sick fed up of being dumped in leper corners for the ohhhhh smoking kills crew.
as for put them to the back of the queue why ??? they are paying more in tax than you are perhaps its you who should be at the back of the queue. |

Before she ddied my nan had emphysema and had to have oxygen in her house for her to use.

Tens of thousands of people die/end up in hospital every year in road accidents.
Driving a car is also not nescessary to live, perhaps we should stop people from doing that if they want hospital treatment? |

You said exactly what I was gonna say. I'm an ex smoker, been quit nearly 7 years now. When I was accessing the NHS smoking cessation clinic they told me that nicotine is more addictive than heroin.
Op, until you have tried to kick a highly addictive drug you cannot possibly understand what it's like. |

No one says smokers do not pay taxes so far no one has come close to making my points invalid. As for the poster whose parent had empheysemia my mum went through exactly same thing so i know what its like.
My point is and i wish my mum took notice at first warning from docs but she did not unfortunately and so with all the information and smoking quitting education help and alternatives available should folk be molly coddled.

i wonder if all the non smokers would be so with this view if somehow smoking was abolished where would all the needed extra revenue come from. its easy to sit on a high moral horse.
would you be so understanding if it was found the carsonogenics from burning diesel and petrol was the main cause of lung cancer and extra taxes were levied on your precious motor or if walking about in leather shoes was bad for your feet so extra taxes levied. i dont sit in judgement over legal things others do that i find repugnant, why because its their freedom of choice to do as they wish why do the smoking police find it ok to sit in judgement over smokers ??? |

Statement about phones and road kilks is irrelevant and to be honest expected this type of point being raised.
Quite simply if your health is at stake and you sre tokd stop smoking as it will make it worse and thrn choise to ignore medical advice why on earth shoild folk then get the help that folk with genuine thoughts of getting better lose out.
Smoking is a lifestyle choice and no one forced into it.

You keep banging on about a choice, a lifestyle one, that is utter rubbish.
Once you start it is so highly addictive, no one chooses to smoke in order to be ill later in life
And what about the people who smoke when the risks were not known or advertised?
Maybe you need to look up the word addiction.
Oh and what about people who drink?
Or obese people?
Or people on crack cocaine who need weaning off?
The list could go on and on, it is up to people to choose how they live their life as long as it is within the law.

Having sex is a lifestyle choice. Should those who are infected with HIV/sti's not be entitled to treatment from the NHS??
Working in some professions, including the NHS and Prison service puts staff at risk of infectious diseases such as Hepatitis.. should they also not receive treatment?
YOU may fall ill because your body has an allergic reaction. Are you not entitled to health care because you put yourself in that situation/ate that food??
I work in the NHS and it REALLY boils my piss when people make judgement calls without engaging brain.
How about supporting those who spend their lives helping others, employed and volunteers, instead of making sweeping statements about one very small minority?

The problem is there IS no reasoned argument for smoking. It's about the only thing that has absolutely no positive aspect to it and, if used as intended, WILL negatively affect the user's health. If it was introduced onto the market now, it would never get approval and would be an illegal drug just like all the other killers.
HOWEVER
It ISN'T illegal - nicotine IS an addictive drug - and people are perfectly at liberty to choose to damage their health in that way, same as people who engage in dangerous sports or people such as myself who are obese.
As such, we cannot pick and choose who has access to health services and shouldn't deny help to those people engaging in perfectly legal activities - even if those activities may impact negatively on health. It's a health service for ALL. |
