Ok, as the title suggests, I very rarely start new threads and only add to post's that interest me, BUT I am starting to feel, that as a species, ie humans, we are really lacking the ability of applying common sense, to any situation, ie is this person real, should I risk this situation because I want a shag, and I am not even going to bring in that of common sense in the work place!
Is it just me? That thinks no one can think for themselves anymore? I don't want to rant to be honest, but sometimes is it really just me that is thinking 'REALLY???' |

I agree and it's felt like that for a long time. It's really insulting for me to fail at getting a job to make a basic wage and to see that they employed a zombie instead of someone that can think for themselves and show the ability to intelligently interact. It seemed to go out of the window with manners! |

Nope I have that sinking feeling when reading some things in here. Common sense does seem to fly out the window a lot. And as you say work always seems to be the worst place for it (and I am also guilty of lacking it sometimes)

It is easier to be a sheep than the sheep dog, so people tend to follow the crowd, conform to others rather than being individual, you see that in soo many posts, |

But it is not just on here it is in life in general! I do think people lack the ability of applying common sense, no matter what job you are performing, I think I might just have to despair in private! |

Common Sense is in short supply everywhere, I see it on here, in the workplace and at home.
At least here you can explain some of it away as entertainment. |

We can despair together.
I think it is a combination of some people just being incapable of thinking for themselves, and those who just need constant reassurance. I have patience for neither.
Plus, some people really are just a bit thick. |

I have to agree.
Education is sometimes blamed and to be fair, after seeing some junior doctors straight out of medical school and other grads they have a point. Intelligence and common sense do not always go together |

Reassurance is not a problem unless someones permanently on hand and depending on it every day.
Anxiety is not the same as being dim, it's about worrying about getting things wrong or not being good enough; often a sign of previous abuse |

I know! But my huge question is why? I really don't get it! It is such a bug bare of mine and would love to know the answer! Is it a generic/age or can we no longer think for ourselves? Because sometimes I just want to give up! Or am I just to fecking old lol |

It's nothing to do with age or the sign of the times. It's always been there. Neither is it anything to do with education. You either have it or you don't. I know a fair few, well educated people without an ounce of common sense. |

Too be honest I will disagree, I think education had a lot to do with it, I really don't think people are taught to be free thinkers and want to be lead into everything! And that is what is wrong with the workplace! You might have a degree, but no common sense? And we wonder why the country is up shit creek??? So many people have degree's but they are useless in my eyes! And yes I am an employer |

I've met plenty older people that lack it. You wonder how they survived so long and usually the answer is that they always had more money than sense and often inherited it rather than earned it.
It's not about age and you cant lay it down to a demographic of any sort. It's about the ability to learn and do for yourself |

To rely on the common sense of other people will lead to disaster.
You'd go broke if you set up a stall to sell it. Those with it don't need to buy and those with none would not see the need.
The nanny state has a lot to answer for, without it we'd have Darwinism in action. Not necessarily a good thing. |

I think when it comes to the Internet/social networking sites quite a lot of people throw what little common sense they had out of the window
They seemed wrapped in a bubble, until it bursts when they realise they are talking to a bunch of strangers who actually might not agree with them |

I'm going to stick my neck out, and suggest it might be a generational thing...
Not talking about the yoof of today, but since the baby boomers we've all started having it easier and easier ...
More people taking responsibility for our own actions, technology replacing simple things that we had to do for ourselves, from calculators doing sums, to intelligent cars ....
We've stopped having to think for ourselves and being responsible for our own actions, and it's getting worse as society "progresses" |

because unfortunately sometimes these doctrines are working from outdated popular reference materials.Like in the early days of science, they can often ridicule new ideas.Take all that faffy quantum physics stuff eh!
In the cocksure sense, lets say doctors, sometimes spending a very small amount of time with the patient , they will give a generic easy answer. My sister was told her child was just a slow learner and would start crawling soon enough. Now my sister having 4 children previous felt this wasnt the case at all.So continually stating this she was fobbed off...and then, a year and a half later, my eldest niece was eventually diagnosed with cerebral palsy.I was working for the health service and I felt disgusted. So i'd define the whole thing as pretty cocksure. |

There are many people that choose not to think for themselves and whether or not they realise buy what they're told, think what they're told, view others by the norm they are taught, believe what's the in style, eat what they're told, marketing, media and trust in them is worrying.
The TV manipulates people, it lies, you they believe it. |

I think what started off as a good thread has turned into a ridiculous generalisation of all those (or most)that have attained degrees.
In fact some posts look a little like sour grapes towards those that have worked that bit harder on their education.

In order to study medicine 'A' level physics is usually a prerequisite which means quantum theory is a concept they would be perfectly familiar with..it's hardly new material |

well its not really one persons medical opinion, its a multidisciplinary team...supposedly there to share and evaluate the 'data', clearly that didnt happen, more likely due to hierarchical elements.I'd seen that through alot of my 10year health care career both in the working environment and the classroom. |

Personally I wouldn't knock anyone for furthering their education from leaving at 15/16.
Someone's indoctrination though wouldnt make me think of them as anymore intelligent. Just more capable of listen, listen, repeat, repeat or add to theories by singing from the same sheet.
Do we trust everything we are taught as being correct ?
Do you trust in everything you are told as the truth ? |

I learned about lithographic printing machines when studying design...not really anything I'd need in my modern design needs....
I was in A+E today, I did some research before I went though...and I believe that IS the point of the thread, rather than the route it appears to have taken, it is about people using common sense, which means adapting to real world events by themselves, some of which just cant be textbook responses because of the variances in human interpretation and actions |

Ok, I can appreciate that, but let me give you another example of a 'cocksure' doctor who acted in haste...with a very different outcome to the patient.
My husband was involved in a very serious road traffic accident in the mid Nineties, immediately after the accident an off duty doctor stopped his car on the opposite side of the motorway as my husband was being cut out of a vehicle, apparently on the brink of death.
An ambulance paramedic had wrongly diagnosed my husbands condition, but he was under tremendous pressure and stress at the time such was the carnage.
The off duty medic, a 'cocksure' junior doctor at a London hospital, with little practical experience and fresh out of medical school, saved the life of my husband with what can only be described as a split second decision.
We were later informed by a surgeon that without the quick thinking of this 'cocksure' junior doctor...who could have simply driven on past the accident on the opposite carriageway, my husband would not have made the Twenty minute drive to the hospital

yes, so there are many variables, that is why I also stated my experience(s),of a world where the unquestioned professionals have in my opinion got it wrong(which turned to fact), perhaps they didnt get it wrong but had just became slightly apathetic to their specialized subjects.Thats why we must always question! |
