I've been told this is an old fashioned statement but I believe a man should do sertain things for lady i.e hold her bags for her open doors offer your jacket on a cold night that sort of thing. But it seems more and more people disagree these days, am I being a bit old fashioned or is chivalry officially dead? |

I'm not sure there's a place for chivalry, if by that you mean treating women different to men. Just treat everyone the same no matter what their gender is - open doors for everyone, offer to carry bags for everyone, offer your seat on the train/bus to everyone. Makes the world a better place. |

It is simple common decency to help others regardless of gender.
If a male does it for a female simply because she is female then he's a mysoginist in my book.
I help anyone who is struggling.
I won't help a lazy bastard whether male or female.
I don't struggle with stuff while an egotistical indifferent sails though effortlessly.
I'd hate to see a skinny wimpy bloke struggling under bags whilst his hippo of wife waddled by like the queen of tarts.
I loathe those that can't acknowledge a simple act with a thank you.
I accept graciously when someone opens a door for me or holds bags if I have too many BUT ..... if they did it cos Im female I would fucking crush them there and then.
Same applies to bloody women who accept it... |

Basic good manners never does any harm and even if a gesture is snubbed the fault is probably not yours. |

I am going to say the non pc thing here and say that I love getting treated like a princess. I know its not practical in everyday life but if a man makes me feel special I do like it. So those gestures of chivalry work on me and make me want to do nice things right back |

Now you are saying ..... You'd hold doors open for your male mates.
Carry your male mates bags AND
Put a coat on their shoulders and go without yourself on a cold night ?

Men have been treating women like shit for millennia.*
I just don't see the point of some tiny wee man offering to help a great hulking woman like me with my bags.

I think times have changed if you looked back at the 1940's and 50's, men were real gentlemen, they were brought up with manners and values, but today that seems out dated and not well practised. Times were nicer then, the world was a simpler place, and communities actually spoke to each other, which doesn't happen now! Time machine please!! |

I'm certainly not a feminist. I'm bit of everything. I earn my own money and can afford to pay half or full amount when on date though on first date a gentleman should pay. I do love a man who acts like a gentleman. Little things like holding door open, making sure I'm home safe, protecting me and looking after me. I think nowadays needs be more a mix. I like a guy to make first move show me he's a man not a boy |

I can't agree with you I'm afraid, probably because I hold women in such high regard my mother is one, my aunties are and my daughter will one day be one, I find it shocking that if I want to take a lady out to dinner and pull out her chair, pay her compliments, pay for dinner pay for the taxi to take her home and expect nothing in return that I am now a sexist, how the hell did that happen, have men treated women so badly that this is how we are going to be from now on, I never thought that feminisim could go to far, guess I was wrong |

This has nothing to do with feminism, it is to do with treating everybody the same. I have no problem with men being nice because that's how they are, but I do have a problem with men treating me like some helpless piece of china.
Its a no win situation for women these days. If we ask for equal wages we're moaning, if we ask for equal treatment, its feminism gone mad. If we get treated even slightly better than men in some respects (cheaper club admission etc) then it's unfair.
Just treat everyone the same! |

In the 40's and 50's women were treat like underdogs and second class citizens to men who went out to work, down to the pub then expected his slippers to be warmed and the tea to be on the table as soon as he walked in and if not probably beat his mrs black and blue if it wasn't. Only difference is it was hidden and there was less media to report it.
To go back to that no thank you! I like manners but I'm still a independent woman and expect to be treat no differently to the next person!! |

I love it, I'm with someone whose from a different generation where it was treated as being chiverlous and not thought of in any other way. I would hate the day a man couldn't treat me how he wants to purely because of his background. I would open the door for anyone but I love it when a guy stands when I leave the table and puts my coat on for me. |

There's not enough around. As u mentioned holding door carrying heavy bags. I wouldn't expect or feel comfortable letting a man pay all for everything all the time but on first date yes I'd love it. Proves he can and wants to take care of me,values me and my time and wants to see me again. I also like when go out a man buys first round. I've got a male friend who is 58 if go for drink after work he always buys me first drink. I do but second but think its nice manners. |

Proves he can and wants to take care of me,values me and my time and wants to see me again. I also like when go out a man buys first round. I've got a male friend who is 58 if go for drink after work he always buys me first drink. I do but second but think its nice manners. "
If two blokes go out after work ...... which one shows the manners first ? |

"I've been told this is an old fashioned statement but I believe a man should do sertain things for lady i.e hold her bags for her open doors offer your jacket on a cold night that sort of thing. But it seems more and more people disagree these days, am I being a bit old fashioned or is chivalry officially dead?

Why do you hold women in such high regard?
Why do you think this has to be shown by paying for meals and pulling out chairs ?"
I hold women in high regard because I was bought up by my mom and her sisters and they were the very definition of strong independent women.
And I don't think this has to be shown by me paying for meals and pulling out chairs, that is just my way, it's how I choose to live and I don't think I should be labeled a sexist for being respectfully in a way that I see fit |

I dont mean single somebody out for being a woman I suppose I chose the wrong word in chivalry I just meant generally being polite as I see a lot of men teat women like shit that just wouldn't of happend ten years ago
So ...
Now you are saying ..... You'd hold doors open for your male mates.
Carry your male mates bags AND
Put a coat on their shoulders and go without yourself on a cold night ?
Leave him alone, Anyone would think thar you suspect that he's furiously back peddling now the thread isn't going as planned and it's not full of stooping women posting gushing "my hero" type replies.
I'm not though am I I still think you should treat a woman right an not treat her like shit "
You are missing a lot of points.
Of course women should be treated with respect.
Of course women should NOT be treated like shit.
They should be treated just like any other human being.
It's the fact that you seem to feel they need some kind of 'special' treatment in the way one would treat a child or an invalid that I find odd.
I enjoy being treated well by anyone.
I never enjoy being patronised by misguided males.
I find it very telling that the word 'feminism' was brought into the discussion.
If ever a woman objects to something the word is used as some kind of insult. Usually by those that can't define it.

One of the reasons I walked away from a meet after a minute he didn't hold the door open. I would have overlooked him walking in front of me but regardless of gender holding the door is just good manners. |

"I think times have changed if you looked back at the 1940's and 50's, men were real gentlemen, they were brought up with manners and values, but today that seems out dated and not well practised. Times were nicer then, the world was a simpler place, and communities actually spoke to each other, which doesn't happen now! Time machine please!! "
Where are you getting this from? Films, literature, people from that era?
Communities were just as suspicious of new people coming in as they are now. The gossip in a community could leave some people with very unhappy lives. I'm getting that from talking to older people about what was good and bad about then and now.
One older lesbian woman told me how badly she was treated by men because she didn't always respond in the same way other women did.
Reading through the personnel archives of an organisation I used to run, all the women were required to leave as soon as they got married after the war. Men in more junior posts were paid more than women in more senior posts.
But that's all ok because they opened doors for women and would carry their bags and everyone talked to each other.
The communities thing really makes me angry - you are part of your community. Talk to people if you want them to talk to you. Or is it always someone else that should do these things?

I would have to say most women, the majority anyway cos some women I just don't like but that's because of their personality not their sex, I find women in general amazing, and it's not like I am saying men are prices of crap, but I just think that in general women, are amazing |

"I think chivalry should be left where it belongs - in the dark ages.
I think everyone should be treated equally in regards to manners and courtesy regardless of their gender."
There's equality but then chivalry is just little extra kindness to women little things like looking after females in ur life eg girlfriend, daughters etc. it's not out dated or patronising. It's the simple things a man does like hold the door open protecting me and generally being the man in the relationship. If u were in a bar and a guy cand over started insulting and threatening u would u want left to fight ur own battle or would u want a male friend/partner or even stranger to stand up for u and put the guy in his place? |

I fight my own battles. A man intervening is likely to make the situation escalate in my experience. |

I love chivalry.. I instal I hope sup values in my children. I have not met guys again because they have done things that I have interpreted as rude. I.e. not opening the door for me, buying themselves a drink and not asking if I want one.. many things.
It is I'm afraid dying but mostly because half the time women seem to take offence..
I like to be treated properly.. |

It isn't dying because some women take offence.
It's still around because some women labour under the illusion that men have a duty to them and owe them something other than common courtesy. |

Chivalry doesn't offend me at all. I just see it as unnessary and outdated. I don't expect to be treated differently by a man just because I'm a woman. I am not a damsel in distress and I don't need to be looked after. I like to be treated properly as well, but that should just come with having manners and respect. I do not expect a different level of manners from a man, I expect the same level of manners from everyone. |

Exactly. I would find this rude regardless of whether they were a female or male friend. Just like if I go to the bar I will offer the girls and the guys a drink. |

I am quite capable of looking after myself and would only expect a bouncer or staff member to intervene if I requested it. If a male friend or partner got involved without me asking them, they'd get the sharp edge of my tongue also...
I had this discussion with a group of cons, one of whom was inside for beating up a guy who insulted his girlfriend - said GF dumped him part way thru his sentence...I said that I'd have dumped him the moment he lifted his hand against the bloke in the pub and they couldn't get their heads round that

Personally I'd love a guy to protect and defend me. It's sexy and makes me respect the guy.
I would find any friend rude not offering drink. But if its in context of a date or with male partner I'd expect him buy first round. I like gentlemanly manners |

Some people won't as some people will think if they didn't say/do anything then the person who got insulted would think. No one cares about them being insulted and right or wrong. He was only defending you. If you believe he went the wrong way about it. You should have just told him in private. Told him not to be full on next time and move on. |

No the older person should not have to change the way they demonstrate manners.
There is room for each generation to appreciate the other without personalising things..... I really enjoyed that kind of behaviour in my DAD and GRANDAD .. rest them x |

"I'm not sure there's a place for chivalry, if by that you mean treating women different to men. Just treat everyone the same no matter what their gender is - open doors for everyone, offer to carry bags for everyone, offer your seat on the train/bus to everyone. Makes the world a better place.
One of the reasons I walked away from a meet after a minute he didn't hold the door open. I would have overlooked him walking in front of me but regardless of gender holding the door is just good manners.
Regardless of gender you said Sassy ..... so im guessing if a female strode in front of you and let the door go you'd think she was bad mannered too ?"
No: as I actually like men opening doors for me, pulling out chairs, burdening under my bags whilst I drag my hippo arse in front of them carrying nothing heavier than my Prada bag.
I LOVE it, so shoot me! |

Ok, I might not have a hippo arse, but I quite like it also, I like a bit of chivalry |

"I love chivalry..
Too right men should be men women should be ladies. If I'm with a guy even a friend and he goes to the bar without least offer me a drink its rude but also ungentlemanly.
Is it rude of your female friends not to buy you a drink ?"
Yes as the first words out of our mouth when we hit the bar is "what's everything having?" Never been to a bar with friends (either gender) and just got a drink for myself. |

"I think chivalry should be left where it belongs - in the dark ages.
I think everyone should be treated equally in regards to manners and courtesy regardless of their gender.
I am quite capable of looking after myself and would only expect a bouncer or staff member to intervene if I requested it. If a male friend or partner got involved without me asking them, they'd get the sharp edge of my tongue also...
I had this discussion with a group of cons, one of whom was inside for beating up a guy who insulted his girlfriend - said GF dumped him part way thru his sentence...I said that I'd have dumped him the moment he lifted his hand against the bloke in the pub and they couldn't get their heads round that
Some people won't as some people will think if they didn't say/do anything then the person who got insulted would think. No one cares about them being insulted and right or wrong. He was only defending you. If you believe he went the wrong way about it. You should have just told him in private. Told him not to be full on next time and move on. "
Sorry Crazed, you've misunderstood my post, it's never happened to me (thank Gawd), I was merely relating a conversation I had with a group of prison inmates |

If females ever reach a common consensus, would they please let us males know the outcome.
This thread proves the reason guys are confused about what females want,is females dont have a clue themselves.
So I would suggest to the males, just do as you have always done.there's a fifty percent chance it's going to be the right thing, one way or the another. |

That rather assumes all women should think and behave the same and that all men should think and behave the same.
The point is to treat PEOPLE with respect, regardless of their gender. |

as a male I find that a puzzling statement tbh..
'men should be men' will depend on ones own perception and experience of what is being a 'man'..
and again what is a 'lady', sounds like some outdated media ideal which usually only applied to the privileged..
and on the drink thing, that's not 'ungentlemanly' it is rude and the sign of a tight arse.. |

Looks like will never be a correct answer. Simply everyone should have good manners and treat others with respect they deserve though the gentlemanly tjings u like holding door "ladies first" buying first drink in a bar helping carry bags Etc and paying on first date |

i'm racking my brain(not a great deal of racking to be honest)and i can't think of any similar situation involving males, where something as simple as holding a door open, causes quite so much division. |

"I've been told this is an old fashioned statement but I believe a man should do sertain things for lady i.e hold her bags for her open doors offer your jacket on a cold night that sort of thing. But it seems more and more people disagree these days, am I being a bit old fashioned or is chivalry officially dead? "
Time and a place. About time women started taking my bags when I'm cumbered, and holding doors open for me!! |

As a man i am getting very confused ?
you want us to treat you as lady's.(fare anufe) I have np with that.
But you all so want to be on a level playing field and treated the same. Which is how it should be.
Now to have the level playing field. Dos that mean may be geting the first round in at the pub? Geting the door for your self. Or even you bort the shoping so you Cary it.?
I my self do like to be a gentleman 90% of the time. But felt I had to ask this. |

Your putting what every woman has said together as if one person holds that view.
Try reading EACH persons opinion instead of lumping them together. |

If im on a social I offer to pay my way, if on a arranged meet and im flush will offer to pay half beforehand but if im not then before arranging meet I say im a bit skint and offer to arrange when im in the money then I don't feel so guilty. Have been turned down for with offer to pay either way. Chivalry not quite dead yet |

If I pull out your chair before dinner it's because that's me, if I want to pay for that dinner it's just my way, by doing so this is in no way shape or form a statement of my belief that women are inferior it's because if I have taken a lady out to dinner then I like her and I want to show her the respect that she deserves.
If you are offended by my manners then we are really in the shit. |

I'm not a girly girl: I know, shocker!
I've managed to buy, maintain and run my own home without male input. I've travelled on business, holiday etc carrying my own bags, opening my own doors. I have money. I'll get the drinks in, buy dinner etc however, I like being pampered and treated.
If I'm on a bus and an elderly person, parent with child, young person on crutches comes on I'll offer my seat regardless of gender, I don't think about it. Likewise I see nothing sinister, patronising in a man walking on the outside of me, putting his coat down over a puddle so my tootsies don't get wet etc! |
