reaction times for drivers

By (user no longer on site) OP     over a year ago

Ok, yesterday in our local supermarket car park i watched an elderley gentlemen take the best part of 5 minutes to extract himself and walking stick from his car(his wife had to help him).

I in no way condone drink driving but surely the reaction times of someone who is half a glass of wine over the limit are still quicker than some one who needs help and 5 mins to get in and out of his car before driving.

or is it just me that thinks that!!

I don't see the correlation between mobility and reaction times. His brain maybe sharper than people half his age etc.

when you get to 70 you need to get your doctor to say you are still fit to drive. some doctor just rubber stamp the forum. It is the people who like this old man that danger should be banned from the road 5 minutes really?

Did you know that truck driver have limits on the hours they can drive in a day and week. But there are no limits for car drivers. In my last job I did a lot of driving 8 hour drive a at least one a month. and about 1000 miles a week most weeks. mad.

They shoud make people do retests every 15 years. Loads of people shouldn't be on the roads.

Me neither. By the OP's logic disabled people should all be banned from driving.

And OP your argument is condoning drink driving.

That said, there is an issue that too many in this country view driving as a right not a privilege. But that in no way is just the old.

unfortunately its up to the driver to decide whether they shouldn't drive any more and I have seen similar to the OP, in fact the guy couldn't even get to the newsagent that was 10ft from his car

Where’s the rationality of comparing age related mobility issues against the illegal activity of driving whilst over the maximum allowed alcohol levels....

I just don't get the point of that at all...

Peoplr's health deteriorates a lot quicker than that though. Compulsory annual eye tests and medical would be a start. Bans not points for using mobiles, minimum 2 year bans for 12 points and drink driving. A second ban being an automatic life ban. Any of those would make the roads safer.

Trouble is you can add all the laws you want but unless you have someone to enforce them there pontless.

Having been involved I a clear cut dangerous driving case, where several witness statements were taken at the scene and physical evidence was present only to have the CPS decide to drop the case, makes me think most of these traffic laws are now pointless.

To condone drink driving is to approve of it and I don't think it is right telling the op he is when he makes the effort to state ' I do not '.

How I understood it, he is saying: if you are by law not allowed to drink drive, then why is it by law you are allowed to drive, IF you have slower reactions than a drink driver.

That is exactly the point i am making. I have no problem with people with disabilities/mobility issues. It was merely an observation. I have absolutely no time for drink driving and anyone who does it should hang their head in shame.

I agree that the punishments for driving offenses should be harsher - they are ridiculously lenient.
