"Would you meet someone who has never had a sti check up?
Do you make a point of asking before a meet....."
Not a question I ask as not everyone would tell the truth. All I can do is take measures to protect myself as best I can. |

"Well the only risk you got is through oral. Unless you use a rubber/dental dam. "
What are you talking about? You can catch a lot of things with penetrative sex up to and including HIV. |

"I go there yearly due to being a swinger. Best to be safe and get checked regular "
When I was meeting I would go every three months, more of o thought it was needed (but it never was thankfully) you are only covered for the day of the test until you next have sex. |

You'd be surprised how many older people are being diagnosed with HIV these days. Most of them are bemused how they could have possibly contracted it. |

Erm, you can still catch most things even with using a condom. Using a condom just minimises the risk. Sorry to break it to you... |

If you meet someone at the GUM clinic, see their results as clear and shag them there and then (the CUM clinic) they are potentially still not without infections.
Some infections are not traceable for a while, and not all people will have tests for absolutely every possible infection.
I'd be concerned if I knew people hadn't had checks, as their health is important - mine too!! - but I can't imagine asking for :
Bacterial Vaginosis
Chlamydia
Gonorrhea
Hepatitis A, B, C
Herpes
HIV
HPV
Trichomoniasis
amongst the other STI's results for a meet. When did people last get tested for absolutely all of these?
Prevention is better than cure of course, so taking precautions is wise, but it's going to be unrealistic to take all precautions, as this would mean putting potential mates into quarantine and preventing any sexual activity until they had tested clear. |

Gum clinics don't test for all of these routinely in any case, some will only be tested for if you have symptoms, then p
it's too late to worry, damage done. |

"Well I figured that most people aren't stupid enough to bareback when they swing that that much was obvious."
Seriously?
You'd be shocked by how much bareback-ing actually goes on!
The whole issue about being tested is a contentious one.
It does depend on what is tested for - not all STIs are tested and even HIV tests are only done if requested. Also the test is only as good as the 3 months leading up to the test.
The incubation period for HIV is said to be 8 - 24 months so people could have it but not know it.
We do all run the risk of catching something if we play with others. We have to take responsibility for our own behaviour and hope that others do the same.
It's a balance of risk really, just like it is when you are driving to your favourite swingers' club - especially the way some knob-jockeys drive these days! |

Some of this may depend on where you live and what your sexual circumstances are. Down here on my bit of the South Coast (Brighton, Worthing etc) the GUM clinics encourage you to have a full sexual health screening even if you've gone in with symptoms for one thing. If you're a bi man, they may encourage you to have Hep B and C jabs. It's my view that GPs should give every new patient a sexual health screening no exceptions, but at present they generally just make the offer. A lot of people seem to think that because they don't know they have an STI, they don't have one, which of course is absurd. |

As per the title, ignorance of what GUM means is a concern.
If you are honest about your sexual history and behaviour at the clinic, they will test for what is likely.
Sexually active bareback swingers will likey be checked for most everything.
Dishonesty on here is to be deplored, dishonesty about yourself at the GUM would be plain stupid. |

This is true, as soon as you have sex with someone the results are worth nothing, anyone having an active swinging sex life with multi partners should get tested once a month or at least every months minimum as a duty to others they play with.

For people that lie and say they're clear and they're not or they never been, not only putting themselves at risks but putting other people at risk is down right fucking stupid and selfish. |

"Every 3 months is what most gum clinics advise for active swingers and I go religiously when I've had sex but not meeting at the moment "
I ,Cali, Go every 4 to 6 weeks regardless... Recently my nurse has been taking the mickey out of my lack of partners.. but we do get on well... I don't have to ask for full screening now but make sure you are honest with them as they will offer you more and a bigger bag of condoms too x |

What's even scarier is he's not alone in assuming a condom is an in-penetrable barrier and if you use them you'll never risk diseases or pregnancy (always reminds me of the friends episode when Rachel tells Ross she's pregnant)! Amazes me how many think you only need to go to the clinic 'if you have something'...you can't possibly know till you've had the swabs.
As for the OP...I look after my sexual health as much as I can (condoms, regular testing). I do try to select more responsible play mates too but there's no way of ever knowing for sure just how responsible/careful they are so I treat them all like they might not be I guess |
