Buy an SSD ( Solid state drive ) for your laptop or PC, just upgraded mine and WOW the speed is bloody awesome !!!
Boot up time to desktop is 10 secs, meaning i can be perving and reading the forums in around 20 secs lol !!!

If you go to a company called nova tech they are doing 120GB for under £70 and 256GB for 125 BARGAIN !!
Its really worth doing the speed is phenomenal !! Mind you i do have it combined with an 8 core amd processor lol but nevertheless you will still a massive improvement

If your putting it in a laptop then go for the bigger one, if its going into a PC then you can use the smaller one purely for windows with a standard sata drive for your files and media |

Can I add - if you are using an SSD drive do NOT run hard drive Defragmentation programs on it.
They actually contribute to the wear of the memory cells, plus the modern Solid State drives have algorithms for data block storage which mean you don't need to run them. |

All of my machines have SSDs. Wouldn't put them in work servers yet though, as they are still too expensive.
You don't defrag them because it makes them wear out more quickly. |

Enterprise grade SSDs - for a 400Gb capacity model its about £3k at present.
Anyone for a RAID 5 array with a hot spare for the same price a new family car?  |

They do lol, however your programs etc are installed on a hard drive which needs to be accessed and then run.
Because an ssd has no moving parts and can read/write much much faster it makes all your programs load and run faster |

Lol depends how old the machine is to be honest, but the combination of a good processor, decent amount of ram and an SSD will make a bloody huge difference in speed |

Do you know, that the modern day smart phone, has more computing power than the Space Shuttle? And that a modern Scientific Calculator has more computing power than the Apollo rockets!
If the computer on board the USS Enterprise NCC1701D was real, with it's size, it would be able to control ever electrical bit if equipment on earth.......1.2million times over!

When installing an SSD you want win7 or newer too as these OS's come with the trim function which is required to keep an SSD in shape. Though it has been a while since I purchased my SSD and maybe the SSD drives take care of this themselves.
I would also refrain from solely using an SSD. You'll generally find those who use one use it to read from only. Constant writing / deleting from an SSD will degrade it (hence no de-fragging). Ideally you want to install an SSD and install your OS and your main programs / games onto it. In your system you still want to keep a SATA drive to store all your files and any other generic programs / games. Also re-direct all temp directories and my document folders to the SATA drive too.
Things may have progressed a little in the SSD world since I purchased mine a few years ago but I believe they are still mainly used to simply read from. On the laptops I have seen with an SSD fitted they also have a SATA drive in them still too.
Be wary running any bench test programs to see just how fast your SSD is too as many just flood the drive with data then delete it. Again this will degrade the speed of the drive.
They are amazingly fast however and most certainly the way to go. After two years mine has slowed a little but never got any worse. Oh, NEVER do a full format of an SSD either you want to secure erase it |
