The last thread got too big. And having seen so much success I thought it best to carry it on.

I've been otherwise engaged for the last two weigh days and thought I would pop on the scales today. I have lost another 2lbs taking my total loss to 11lb so far.

So I'm feeling rather happy.

I'm No big fan of Paul McKenna but his comments re diets are bloody true. They don't work. Fact. And never will. If they did. Diet Magazines woukd fold overnight.

So. Eat when hungry. Stop when not. The secret is to know when you're really hungry and when you think you are.

So any type of food diets don't work. You must eat what you feel iu want to eat. Not what some twit in an office says you should.

Cavemen didnt have em. And the Body ain't changed since. Good That's that sorted

No no ,it's not a free for all. You eat when you're hungry. It's nit a savings bank. Yiucant starve all week then binge on Sunday. It's educating your

body to eat when it needs to. Not when you think it's time to. Eating only certain stuff on certain days is plain bonkers and unnatural and totally impractical. Hence why diets don't work. Mine is not a diet. Its a change of lifestyle. I'm looking at what I eat. Making decisions as to calories compared to calories used. I can allow myself a bad day if I work it off.

I don't stop myself eating anything, bit now know how that may affect my body. The main affect being I probably won't eat it now.

You can eat any type of food but have to burn more calories than you eat in order to loose weight.

Diets don't work a change of lifestyle does.

I have changed my outlook at to how much something I eat benefits me. For instance 3 biscuits which is a short lived sugar fix or a bowl of mixed fruit and yoghurt lots of vitamins and calcium x

I agree with what you say, everyone I know who diets this way end up putting more back on after.

I think as we have so much refined foods on offer it dies take a bit of control to re-educate your tastes and habits.

I'm currently forced into a lower fat diet after being attacked by my gallstones lol..

Losing about 1lb a week

Now trying to cut out more carbs oh and alcohol!!

I know it's been said before, but Weight Watchers, Slimming World etc, are multi million pound businesses that promote recidivist diet regimes. They make, and continue to make profits in the certain statistical knowledge that clients will return, and return again. It's a simple. but highly effective psychological process, based on building up an unhealthy relationship with food that becomes impossible to maintain.

The horrible, sickening truth about genuine sustained weight loss is that it requires patience, an awful lot of it.

We all want to see the pounds tumbling off, not next month, not next year, but now! If we were told that this time next year we had lost 3 and 3/4 stones most dieters would be delighted, but we don't seem to be prepared to lose just one pound a week in order to achieve that loss.

It's tough though, very tough, and I'm not being patronising or critical of those who are on these diets, I have been there myself. For all the apparent success stories, and don't they just let you know about them! many of us know that depressing feeling of failure, and self disgust when we lapse, and so the cycle goes on.

Perceiving food as an enemy, comparmentlising it, rewards, sins, cheats, etc, leads to an intrinsically unhealthy relationship with food, and profits to the diet giants.

I think that's pretty obvious tbh. People eat lots of fruit and veg and cut out the crap to lose weight. Then when they teach target a lot go back to old habits and it goes back on quicker than it came off.

What I've been eating these past 5 weeks is completely different to what I normally eat. No booze, very little carbs, no junk food, no take away, lots of fresh fruit and veg. My problem is I don't have a big appetite but love biscuits and crisps! So I've just stopped buying them to avoid temptation.

I've been trying to get trimmer over the last couple of months..have thus far lost 4kg...haven't really changed diet yet, I've just added doing weights to my lifestyle.. Three times a week, with a game of football once a week. Once I've improved what I eat, hopefully I'll get rid if the other 5-6kg's so I can go to a swinging club with a bit of confidence.. Till I see all the massive willies swinging from side to side!!

Anybody here try the 5+2 diet they showed on horizons a while back? You choose two days to fast on (you can either fast properly or simply halve your normal portions) whilst eating normally on the other 5 days.

I'm curious as to its efficacy but not sure I have the discipline to maintain it. Nonetheless it seems much more manageable than reducing carbs from my diet...I find that i get quite grumpy when I stop eating carbs. Similar to what some of you guys are doing, I plan on stopping buying 'bad' carbs, and try brown bread/rice... See if that works.

My friend has been doing that and a 25 minute high intensity interval training DVD at home and she's doing really well. I found it too hard as I'm normally up at 5 with my son and not in bed till ten and that's a long day to only have 500 cals on! Lol x

It's easier to show the exercises, though you don't have to lie on the floor for all of them. There are machines that aid crunches, you can use the equipment used to do 'dips' to work on abs too. Check out YouTube, they'll be lots on there. The trick is whichever body parts you're working on is to engage them by focussing your thoughts on that part as your exercising. Apparently it's more effective. X

Nottingham/and everywhere my location says i am ;)

Put nearly 2stone on 6months ago when I busted my knee.. Gruelling physio sessions, restricting carb intake to before 6pm and having carb free days.

Setting up a healthy eating plan I've lost over a stone in the last 9weeks. And actually I'm happier now at 13.5 than I was at 12. All the exercise and eating right has dropped my BF right down but given me Muscle def.

Big confidence boost when you bump into old friends and they tell you how well your looking

Can't see why you need to diet, judging by your pics!...however, as I have posted previously all diet/exercise plans are essentially recidivist, because they are usually not sustainable..most of us can't maintain stuff like intensity interval training, or living a life dominated by calories and all the other jargon peddled by diet plans. We find it so difficult to change our 'lifestyle' because it's too extreme . It all becomes a battle riddled with guilt and self disgust, and we fail.

Then we try new diets, there is always a new fantastic diet, the latest being the fasting one..they keep coming.

Losing weight, and maintaining it, is simple really, it's slow and unremarkable. Gentle realistic exercise, eat what you like, but gradually, gradually eat less.

Mine isn't a diet plan. Just fresh food, less fat/sugar and more fruit and veg. I've cut out alcohol for the time being. As well as sweet stuff apart from the odd small choc bar if I fancy one. No ready meals or take away. Just cooking healthy meals from scratch.

Some of my brothers and my friends have been going to the gym for years, eating brown rice/bread and other foods with high glycaemic indices.. Water instead of fizzy drinks. They have cheat days, but essentially they have slowly refined their lifestyles...weaned themselves off eating rich food as often as I do. I think if you change things gradually...walk before running, it's possible to maintain a healthier lifestyle. It took me a few years to put on the extra kilos...it'll naturally take me some time to take them off. I'm not hoping to be an athlete...just a fitter, stronger version of what I can be.

"I'm No big fan of Paul McKenna but his comments re diets are bloody true.

Good That's that sorted

think its time to pull my socks up, and go back to my old self.

"

Don't forget to fit the charcoal filters in your underwear before you leave the house each day

Congrats to all Nice steady continuing losses is the way to go! There is a lot of motivation from everyone in this thread it's great

Someone mentioned that 5+2 diet. Forget it, there is no need to fast to lose weight. Just work out how many calories you burn in a week, divide by 7 and eat that amount each day. Also keep on top of amount of sugar and bad fats consumed and you should see yourself hitting the targets you wish pretty quickly

13lb lost so far. Need to get below a stone for my own sanity.

Been running lots and started hockey training again. My achilles are rather sore, but I need to keep at it.

Well done on all the weight loss above. If you added it all up there's a couple of people gone!

To the folk trying to lose poundage :

add some weight lifting to your regime... Apparently it's more efficient to combine weights with cardio when trying to lose excess kilos..

Running. Always start off really slow. Naturally find your pace and breath. The more relaxed you run the easier it is and becomes. The same with all exercise and events

Diet. Depending on what your looking for. Losing weight, training for a race or just to look good on holiday. You have to eat little and often. Cut down the amount of carbs you eat in a day. The more good protein you eat the more fat you will shread. Turkey chicken tuna and eggs without the yokes.

If you dont exercise and spend most of your time sitting down you wont lose the weight.

Am an endurance athelete. And have competed in races and expeditions around the world.

My passion a part from this site. Is ultra racing and expedition seakayking.

Hope this helps those who need it.

MAMOBA, miles and miles of bugger all (Aberdeenshire)

Well done on the losses folks.

over the last 3 and a half years, I have lost nearly 17 stone. If I can do it anyone can.

I don't diet, and I don't buy diet foods - most low fat foods are stuffed full of sugar to make them taste good, and artificial sweeteners etc are just wrong.

I use butter and olive oil in my cooking (in moderation) and eat a little of whatever I fancy.

I have become a bit of a fan of the gym, I work out a minimum of 4 hours per week (I do some les mills classes as well as some gym work, a mixture of cardio and weights) as well as making my day to day life more active.

The biggest change I made - I drink more water... apparently western bodies are so used to instant gratitude that we confuse hungry with thirsty. Drink a half pint of water 30 minutes before a meal, and you will eat less. Consciously think of what you are putting into your mouth - eat slower and don't just shovel it in there. Stop eating when you feel just less than full (our bodies take time to realise we are full, and by the time we get the full signal, we have overeaten)

When the wee boy goes to school I am hoping to go to uni to study food and sports.

'The Men Who Made Us Thin' BBC2 last night challenged the notion that exercise makes us thin. It's so deeply hard wired into our culture that it seems insane to question it. What the experts seemed to be saying is, exercise does make you lose weight, but you need to do an awful lot of it.

As we know from Jane Fonda on, millions have been made from videos DVD's all claiming success which might well be accurate. However the sad truth is the majority of us fail to sustain the level of exercise and dedication required to maintain. and end up looking for the elusive 'magic bullet'

Personally, in not too fussed about a six pack but a flat stomach is my aim. Around 4 kilos to shift and I'll be there.

Exercise may not make you thinner, but in moderation, it improves your health, and makes you feel happy.

Also, i think exercise without a good balanced diet is just making things difficult for yourselves.

Not just doing it to aid in weight loss. It's to make me fitter and hoping to participate in some charity runs next year. At the end of the day surely any exercise is better than sitting on my arse?

Exactly.

That 'men who made us thin programme' is bollocks anyway. Last week they said that if we offered the weight watcher programme to 1000 people 885 would turn it down, then went on to say that x amount of people would quit after so long and x amount would not be at goal after so many years. With the conclusion that I think something like only 20 out of 1000 would be slimmer after 3 years. That to me is ridiculous as 885 weren't even following the plan so surely it should be 20 out of 115! You can't include stats from people that didn't even take part in the programme!

I think that they are correct in saying that fad diets are a waste of time and people probably do end up worse off than when they started. But to say that all diets are a waste of time and exercise is pretty much pointless is a bit irresponsible as far as I'm concerned. Diet is only another word for 'what we eat' there are good diets and bad diets and any exercise has to be better than no exercise st all surely?

They even made out that Atkins diet of weight related illness which isn't true.

Having a healthy diet that you can maintain on a day to day basis without shakes or buckets of cabbage soup and some light exercise or weights depending on what you want to achieve Is never going to be a bad thing!

It's all rather simple. Cals burnt have to be less than cals consumed if you want to lose weight. If you eat 4000cals a day then to lose weight purely through exercise and no change to what you eat you will have to do a fair amount everyday! Another fatal mistake so many end up making is they go to the gym and instantly think 'ooh I can eat a bit more or have this treat and that treat as I've worked out' NO!! this will not work either.

The main focus to all wanting to lose weight initially has to be adapting to a healthy lifestyle. That not only means eating a balanced diet with the correct portion sizes but also a little exercise to keep the body working a little more efficiently and will in general make you feel more energised and more confident in yourself. The added bonus is that exercise does burn up more calories than simply sitting around so you should notice the weight loss happen a little easier than simply adjusting your food intake.

I think many people love carbs and these simply are not required as much if you're not very active. High protein, low carb and lots of water is the way to go Exercise alone will never sustain weight loss entirely.

Keep up the effort all you're all doing really well from what I'm reading MissHottieBottie hope you stretched out well after that first session otherwise I think you may have a nice case of DOMS tomorrow. But DOMS is nice pain

I think you'll agree that the word diet has taken on a whole new meaning since the advent of multi national billion dollar profit making ' diet'companies. No one can seriously doubt the value of healthy balanced eating, and yet the levels of obesity continue to rise.

This is the raison d'etre of the series, asking why this is so when we are made aware daily of the the dangers. The programme doesn't have all the answers, but to all of us who have been on diets, if we are honest, recognise all too well the truth of much of the conclusions

Many people smoke despite being aware of the dangers, they use phones whilst driving, they watch lots of television, avoid reading books, don't study hard at university knowing they'll probably be less well off.. It's all part of the the human condition...often we don't appear to behave rationally,

Much of the above are possibly borne out of bad habits that are difficult to shake..the motivation has to come from within. Also expectations have to be realistic, it will take many years of eating poorly and not living an active life in order to become overweight, naturally it'll take time and effort to take it off. Exercising is hard, it hurts. The last rep of the last set is extremely painful. It's probably the one that has the most benefit though... Commitment to anything is difficult..it's an internal challenge... And you'll only achieve your goal if you actually want to. Otherwise, you'll spend your life convincing yourself that the last rep is too much, and you'll forever fall short and then perpetually blame your targets as being unrealistic...move your goalposts and achieve far less than what is possible.

I lost 60 pounds today buying a battery for my car, I got to thinking wouldn't it be great to lose a pound of weight for every pound of money I lose, but then realised I'd have been dead long ago!

So anyway...haven't lost anymore pounds in weight lately, its hard when you work in a tartan shortbread shop! When the job finishes for the season and I have no money for food that situation should be remedied though (bright side...always a bright side!)

"Mine is not a diet. Its a change of lifestyle. I'm looking at what I eat. Making decisions as to calories compared to calories used. I can allow myself a bad day if I work it off.

I don't stop myself eating anything, bit now know how that may affect my body. The main affect being I probably won't eat it now. "

That's exactly what I did. Changed what I ate and cut out sugar in my tea. Lost 13kg without really trying. Deadly time of year for me though as I love warming comfort foods. I'll be stocking up on porridge

I've been otherwise engaged for the last two weigh days and thought I would pop on the scales today. I have lost another 2lbs taking my total loss to 11lb so far.

So I'm feeling rather happy. "

Well done to some amazing weight losses.

I am a bit stuck now, last three weeks were + 1 lb, -1, -1/2. !!!

Have not cheated at all but still need 1/2 lb to get my 3 1/2 stone

I love how I look now and got such a thrill yesterday buying a size 16 after wearing 22-24! but can't get it moved

I have finally hit the 1 1/2 stone lost mark. It'sbeen a tough slog but worth it.

II'm now running faster at hockey training, and my team mates are noticing how sharp I'm looking.

I have shaved 3 minutes off of my 4k run time. As well.

"I'm No big fan of Paul McKenna but his comments re diets are bloody true.

Whatever I feel I want to eat cake and chocolate?? Cave men didn't have them to contend with. Maybe we should all eat paleo diets. "
