I can't believe some people... Went to a store today to get some plasterboard and some sheet wood, the sort of size that won't fit in your car.

As it happened I'd walked there anyway, flat battery for some reason. Took me less than 5 minutes to get there (this place is literally 3 roads away from me). Ordered what I wanted... "£7.50 delivery" he said! Not far off the price of what I'd bloody ordered!

"£7.50???, I only live up the road! Where's the manager who is normally here?". He went out the back and spoke to the guy, who incidentally obviously couldn't be arsed to come and speak to me. The guy came back out again "£7.50 delivery"

I just said, well you've lost yourself a customer then, and left. Couldn't believe it!

Just wanted to get that off my chest...

Sorry I can't help but laugh, you need to get your car battery sorted and then travel somewhere else, and probably pay delivery as it won't fit it your car

I would have paid the £7.50 and have my wood at home now

can totally relate mate, we got a new mattress last year, cost us nearly 400 quid and they wanted to charge 25 quid delivery and the shop was only 500 yards from my house, I argued till i was blue in the face and even to the point of embarrassing the manager over it (i just didnt care at this point), got it delivered for free

although the cheeky sod who delivered it did try at the door one he had delivered it, i told him to see his manager and he'll find its already been taken care of. I'd have have gone ballistic if that was me, I mean £7.50, feck I'd have just taken one of there trollies to take it back to the house.

No, I'll just go somewhere else and cut it to the size I need before putting it in my car. Was just trying to save myself that hassle.

If the manager had bothered to come out he'd have known who I was and quite likely waived the charge, as he has done with a mate of mine who lives the other side of the city!

Lol, I probably could have carried the stuff home, would have been a bit of a bitch granted, but didn't want to give them my money by that point.

Torquay

Delivery charges generally relate to the ever increasing costs to companies that offer such a service.

Fuel prices rising almost by the week, Commercial insurance premiums for vehicles and public liabilty rose dramatically last year, staff costs....

It all adds up for businesses and is why many shy away from free delivery now.

Should count yourself lucky most DIY stores charge £20 minimum, thats even if local, overheads is the problem, and it costs a small fortune for the company.

Getting it from stockroom... Loading it on the van... driving to your house and (no doubt) you expecting the driver to bring it in! I reckon at least 30 minutes...

So, not including the van insurance and liability insurance, the wear and tear on the vehicle, I think that £7.50 was a bargain! I can't afford free deliveries and would struggle at £7.50 to make ends meet!

I wonder why people expect cheap goods (which at the moment are everywhere) and then expect businesses to give away delivery? If that shop doesn't make a profit, they won't be there and you will have to go elsewhere. The more of em there are, the cheaper goods will stay!

30 minutes, you are having a laugh? I had got the sheets myself, could have chucked them in the back myself and (no doubt) I would have got them myself and said cya, he'd have been back at the shop in well under 10!

If they only had 2 deliveries a day they'd be making £5475!!! (yes they are open 7 days a week) and you're telling me you couldn't make ends meet with that?

I wasn't saying they should abolish their charges, just for a regular customer, which I have been for the last few years I'd have thought it really wouldn't have done them much harm to be nice about it.

Wages, Fuel and everything else relating to a vehicle costs money - why do you think you are hard done by because they asked you for £7.50 ?

Ok, you reckon you live only a 3 streets away, so what about the person who only lives 4 streets away, should they deliver his wood for free as well, then don't forget the other fella who only lives 6 streets away, surely it would be unfair to charge him for delivery if they did it free for the guy who lives 4 streets away.

In essence what I'm saying is, where do they draw the line with who pays and who doesn't ?

You'll probably find they charge in bands, so much up to a radius of xx miles, then xx miles and over it'll be a different rate.

The company doesn't get it's diesel for free and I'm sure the insurance comanies won't insure them out of the goodness of their hearts and the staff also have to be paid, so once again...

Why do you think you shouldn't have to pay to have your gear delivered ?

"Why do you think you shouldn't have to pay to have your gear delivered ?"

Well certainly no need to be patronising about it.... I don't expect anything for free, was definitely asking them a favour, but 7.50 is definitely too much for what I was asking them to do.
