Don't train to suit what others want, you'll never ever please everyone. Train for yourself and whatever makes you feel best and most confident in yourself

"Some woman say don't get any bigger it's not attractive but others encourage it although usually seem to find more woman go for the athletic look ? "

I always find the whole 'don't get any bigger' type criticisms strange of gym goers, as though the size a person ultimately reaches is directly related to their efforts, like a 10 stone guy somehow turning into a rippling 18 stone superhero. Without steroids or hormones, every person who trains does so within the confines of their genetic limits, and I've never seen any natural lifter look 'too big' - muscular and strong yes, but not to the point that their muscles look like they're going to rip through their skin.

I don't train to please other people was just wondering what others views I'm no big muscle head but few girls have said recently that I'm getting to big ??? I don't take steroids and I train hard and I don't diet I'm not ripped just seems odd that you get the typical blokes who every time they see you ask what steroids you take ( NONE ) and then some girls have been saying lee you need to calm down at the gym your going to look like a freak ???? But still want your number lol I'm confused lol

Maybe I'm just looking into this to much haha

You can't please everyone and people are entitled to their own opinions of what they think is big and what's not.

For me at your height I wouldn't want to be that weight but I assume you probably eat a lot of carbs to keep the strength levels up to lift the big weights in the gym. I don't know why people think you must be on roids if you suddenly start to get big. The roids look is totally different to a natural bulked look.

Have fun cutting, it's a fine balance of carbs / protein to cut but not lose strength.

"I don't know why people think you must be on roids if you suddenly start to get big. The roids look is totally different to a natural bulked look. "

Probably due to the fact that the general public has no idea what a steroid built physique looks like. In the vast majority of natural lifters cases, you can be big and smooth or small and defined, but not both at the same time.

In our experience people that "suddenly" start to get big are on steroids which they generally loose when they come off. Peoples perseptions of steroids can be off the mark as they think that you just sit on your arse and take steroids and you will grow muscle! You still have to work the muscle for it to grow, most people we know who are on steroids work extremely hard at the gym.

That is very true yes, and as well as the gym work they also have to be very anal about their diet if they want to enter competitions.

I think some people think the same about protein shakes etc. There is no all out magic solution which requires zero effort to get big, the hours still have to be put in in the gym The only sup I use that gives a little visual effect is creatine (in with protein shake) which just helps the muscles retain a little water for a more full look. Will say as soon as I up the cardio though it strips that away, especially in this heat we're having at the moment!

Its true, but that fact remains that many natural lifters, like myself, DO put in the hard work with the weights, but will never come anywhere near the level of strength and muscle of a steroid user.

Yes I agree that both steroid and non steroid users do put in the hard work but my point was that steroid users dont just pop a pill and grow ( unless theres alot of water retention)

Actually, I recall once reading reports of a study from 1996 where four groups of males were collected for an experiment in muscle gain, and were broken into four groups:

1. Steroids and exercise

2. Steroids and NO exercise

3. Just exercise

4. No steroids or exercise

At the end of the study, group 1 had understandably gained the most muscle, group 2 gained less, but STILL more than group 3 - proving that even WITHOUT exercise, steroids are still better for muscle gain than exercise alone.

Nik likes the muscular look.

I'm 6-2 or 3" and 102kg at the min and 11% bf.

She prefers the drier look where muscles are visable.

We have noticed 90% of men on here who tick athletic have never lifted or done any sport in Their lives.

When we say sorry we are looking for athletic men, they get all shitty.

People don't realise how hard it is to actully build muscle.

Finally got nik into weightlifting after she now understands women will not get big an muscular from lifting weights.her ass is looking amazing from squats already

"People don't realise how hard it is to actully build muscle."

True, though even those who do know how to train, and train very hard, will still never get anywhere near the level of muscle a steroid user can - if a natural lifter gains a single stone of muscle during their whole lifting career whilst maintaining a relatively low level of bodyfat, then they'll have done very well.

People don't like rejection much on here it seems, especially the guys hence the shitty responses.

Everyones perception of athletic will be different to others so you have to consider that. To me it does mean a toned figure which has a V shape and that hopefully the person is in a reasonable state of fitness. Of course some people that looked ripped can actually be quite un-fit cardio wise.

Getting that dry look is a nightmare. I currently am the same height as you, only 84kg but am hovering between 10.3 - 10.7% bf. I am nowhere near as dry looking as the really ripped guys. I think I'd need to stop drinking for a few days to get that, but that goes against me for the cardio work.

You'll find someone who ticks your boxes but it's prob best to go hunting for them yourself so you get what you want.

Just like to say even if the pics you guys have up are pre Nik starting the squats she does indeed have a lovely arse

You could be right, many of the old time strongmen from the early 20th century set verified records that blow away a huge amount of modern lifts, check out Arthur Saxon, not a massively muscled man by any means, but could lift nearly twice his bodyweight overhead using one hand.

I've had more women complement me and tell me they find my shape attractive than women who have told me they think I'd be more attractive if I was less muscular.

The way I see it and it works both ways, if someone sees that you are in good shape, they see that you are able to look after yourself and therefore likely to be able to look after someone else. Either that or they think you're a prick who's in love with yourself.

As well as exercising hormones have a big role in how muscle grows and hormones vary from person to person and massively between women / men. Men have more testosterone which aids in the bulking of muscle. Exercise / resistance work should increase the amount of testosterone produced which will again aid in muscle growth. This is why some (like Stallone I believe) use growth hormone to get the ripped look. That is different again to testosterone.

Also just for the record people kepo asking why I'm bothered to be honest I'm not bothered what others think it was just curiosity but I'd be lying if I said I'm not fussed at all anyone who goes to the gym and actually trains hard and is in good shape will agree weather we like it or not we are to a degree pretty vain people and do care what we look like otherwise we wouldn't train so hard . Also the comment about being impossible to get the muscle of someone on steroids is rubbish I'm 16 and a half stone and muscular more muscular than alot of the guys on them but the guys who actually know what there doing aswell as taking them don't just rely on steroids they train harder than most people who arnt on them and they diet aswell !

All gone a little off topic all I wanted was just a little insight into woman's views lol

Correct!

Males may have more muscle and bigger muscles in general but the muscles they have are no different from women's except in size.

Of course women muscle up ... if they perform the necessary actions.

Men WONT muscle up if they don't work at it either.

There are female body builders that win world reknowned competitions and there have been for years.

Jodie Marsh did well at body building over the last couple of years.

But it isn't.

The amount of muscle a person can carry is largely dependant on their testosterone levels, testosterone levels that can be raised considerably beyond natural levels through the use of steroids and other enhancing chemicals - if hard work and dedication was the only factor then there wouldn't be anything like as much steroid use in professional sports now would there?

Incorrect - testosterone is a vital hormone in the muscle building pathways wihin the body. Women find it exeedingly hard to bulk because they lack bollocks.

What you will get is women gaining strength (which is NOT the same as building muscle, muscle tissue can be trailed to work harder, I think the generally accepted explanation is that the cells end up having more mitochondria) and losing bodyfat so will look 'ripped', but won't make much in terms of muscle gains. Women can of course gain muscle using steroids.

Basically women avoiding lifting because they will get 'all bulky' is the same as not buying a lottery ticket in case you win the jackpot. Women body builders train their arses off and I imagine a significant portion are on steroids.

"Not only the drugs

Not really, muscle building essentially comes down to lifting big weights, eating a nutritious diet and getting plenty of rest between workouts, the old time lifters understood these basic concepts very well. Add to this that real food will always trump supplements in terms of nutritional value, so really modern lifters don't have anything over those from 60+ years ago besides the drugs.

Jason Blaha recently did a couple of very insightful videos on this subject that heavily questioned many modern day 'naturals'.

Whey protein and creatine would have been very much appreciated by the guys back then. All the other sups are pretty crap.

The guys back then didn't eat every two/three hours which every bodybuilder does nowadays.

There are a lot more machines and training program's in a bodybuilders arsenal compared to back then.

Couple other things too.

I'll check out the Blaha vids

"Whey protein and creatine would have been very much appreciated by the guys back then."

There'd have been no point to it, old time bodybuilders ate so much milk and cheese that they'd have been getting plenty of dairy protein without the need for such a supplement.

"The guys back then didn't eat every two/three hours which every bodybuilder does nowadays."

There's very little research supporting this theory, check out guy by the name of Martin Berkhan, he eats twice a day, is massively muscled, and has written extensively debunking the 2-3 hour rule.

"

Machines and elaborate lifting techniques may allow muscles to be worked in more ways that old time lifters would have done, but its still universally accepted amongst most lifters that the heavy free weight movements they used are STILL the best ways to build muscles.

Milk and cheese are terrible for bodybuilding. Cottage cheese is ok.

Milk is good for skinny guys looking to gain weight but that's about it.

If there's little research why is it that 99% of bodybuilders follow it.

Just checked out the berkhan guy. He's very lean but I wouldn't say heavily muscled (although that's down to personal opinion)

Why ain't everyone following his diet

Free weights are best but machines hit the muscles at different angels like you just said. That helps. Bodybuilders wouldn't use em if they didn't work.

Whey protein is derived from milk and cheese.

The answer to all three - the Weider brothers. They largely monopolised the bodybuilding market during the 60s and most information on the subject since then has come through them, largely in the interest of hawking magazines and supplements.

Google some images of women body builders and tell me women don't muscle up ..... "

Jodie marsh is not muscular.she is toned and lean.

Women do not get bulky and muscular the same as men.

Even the very best are nowhere near the size of the Olympia winners

It comes down to hormone levels.

The body building women jab test, obviously from their faces and voices.

The men also do.

Look at a natural contest.winners can be ten stone.

So if you believe as a woman going the gym is going to give you big muscles.you are wrong

Unless you on gear.

"

Milk and cheese are terrible for bodybuilding.Milk is good for skinny guys looking to gain weight but that's about it.

Whey protein is derived from milk and cheese.

If there's little research why is it that 99% of bodybuilders follow it.

Why ain't everyone following his diet

Bodybuilders wouldn't use em if they didn't work.

The answer to all three - the Weider brothers. They largely monopolised the bodybuilding market during the 60s and most information on the subject since then has come through them, largely in the interest of hawking magazines and supplements. "

Yeah it's derived from milk and cheese without all the fat and carbs.

Milk is great if you are skinny and a hard gainer, otherwise it's crap

Weiders don't have a grip on bodybuilding info like they used to.

Freeweights is best. Free weights and machines is even better. Go look at any bodybuilding vid on utube.

I train at the most hardcore and famous gym in the country. Surrounded by winners and guys with decades of knowledge on training, diet and drugs

Every single one of them follows the diet of eating every 2/3 hours.

Fats and carbs are essential nutrients, and milk is loaded with protein - fat gain from it isn't a problem so long as overall calories are kept in check.

"Weiders don't have a grip on bodybuilding info like they used to."

No, but the vast amounts of misinformation they spewed over the years continues to influence the bodybuilding scene.

Mike Mentzer is another example of someone who didn't believe in any of the above (besides the drugs), and he had a physique that was easily up to standard with those who did.

So if I get my carbs from cola that's ok? I just have to keep my calories in check?

I fail to see how weider still influences the way people train. There's tons of different info out there.

Yet all the other guys mentzer competed against did. Arnold, Coleman etc, all the greatest bodybuilders did.
