1,000,000,000,000 or 1,000,000,000?

I was taught that it's a million million, but it seems that's no longer the case

Is it not... Americans have a million million, we have a thousand million as a billion?

A UK billion used to be a million, million, but it was changed to the American Billion (a thousand-million) sometime either later 70's or early 80's due, so I understand, to the planned 'Big Bang' in the city which brought in global automated trading. Computers would have struggled to ratify transactions, so it got set at the US Billion... as they would have thrown their toys out the pram if they had to use ours instead.. well... something like that....

Just had a quick Google - apparently it was Denis Healey who was Chancellor of the Exchequer in 1975 who decided to adopt the US Billion (1,000,000,000)

Makes sense, every extra 3 digits gets new name

1,000. Thousand

1,000,000. Million

1,000,000,000. Billion

1,000,000,000,000. Trillion

A Googleplex is a 1 with 100 zeroes after it. Saw a good documentary about it. If you tried counting out loud from 1 to a googleplex it would take you several thousand years

It's probably due to the scientific units increasing every three decimal places and hence computers doing likewise.

Kilo 1000

Mega 1000000

Giga 1000000000

Etc.

I like the recent story of a man who was accidentally given 92 quadrillion dollars by Paypal. They withdrew it straight after but can u imagine the interest he would have got if he had invested it.

That's wrong, a googolplex is a 1 followed by 10,000 trillion trillion trillion trillion trillion trillion trillion trillion zeros.

Although that's still not the biggest. Graham's number is huge, so huge no-one knows what the number is.

A billion is:

1,000,000,000

Easiest way to work it out is. Units, tens, hundreds, thousands, ten thousands, hundred thousands, millions, ten million, hundred million, a billion, ten billion, hundred billion, one trillion, ten trillion, hundred trillion and so on

The difference is massive.

Apparently it takes just over 2 weeks to count to a million.

A billion however would take you 32 years!

I saw this answer on wiki.... For googolplex...;-)

I also saw googol to the power googol, where googol is 100 zeroes to the power 100 zeroes.... Or 1 with 10,000 zeroes...

A Googolplexian being Googolplex to the power Googol..... 1 with a million zeroes....

My question is.... How can I get a job in the Googolplex....????

Just read on Wikipedia that a billion can be both 10 to the power of 9 (as in one thousand million) or to the power of 12 (as in a million million), depending on whether it is referring to the short or long scale of large number naming systems.

Three years is around 100 million seconds...

100 years is around 3.15 Billion seconds....

317 years is around 1 Trillion seconds...

1 trillion only has 12 zeroes after the 1.....

1000 years is around 3.16 trillion seconds....

2013 years is around 6.36 trillion seconds....

Psst.... We're still only on 12 zeroes...

A Googol has 100 of the little beggars....

Finally, taking 13.7 billion years as Einstein's age of the universe, since the big bang, or the week God created everything....

This would be around 42.3 with only 18 zeroes after it....

Perhaps this is why 42 is the universal answer to everything......

Invested it where?!

92 quadrillion dollars is over 1000 times greater than the world's GDP.

Dependant on whether you use the short scale where names go up in thousands.... Or the long scale where names go up in millions...

Million, Billion, Trillion....

Technically Britain uses the long scale, which makes a billion 1000,000,000,000.

However, recent tradition, possibly started by a chancellor of the exchequer, has moved us to the American short scale, where a billion is 1000,000,000.... QWD...

In 2020 it will reach 7 billion. That's all I go by. I go by words not numbers as different countries use different amount of zeros.

East Manchester

1 billion is 1,000 x 1,000,000.or 1,000,000,000. 1 trillion is 1,000,000 x 1,000,000 or 1,000,000,000,000. Incidentally America owes China 3 Trillion dollars for the goods they produced on behalf of American companies on credit backed by their respective govts. That's why America is near bankrupt suffering huge numbers of unemployment as companies relocate to cheaper Chinese factories.
