I've always said scone - as in stone...
In traditional English grammar the e makes the o long.
Scon as in ton isn't strictly right, but then I think the word has a Scottish origin, so perhaps our Northern friends could put us right? |

I've always been told it originated in the West Country (Devon/Cornwall) where it's pronounce "s-con" not "s-cone" |

I say sc-own and not sc-on. I've no idea what is the right or wrong way.
How do people say baby or naan bread. I say bay-bee, and narn. I'm not keen on babby or nan |

Fleas flee when faced with fleabags flouting flighty words about curs, hounds, bowwows and mutts. |

I asked the maid in dulcet tone
To order me a buttered scone
The silly girl has been and gone
And ordered me a buttered scone.
I prefer the gone pronunciation... as does the dictionary and most of the population.
Also this joke doesn't work with the tone way...
What't the fastest cake in the world? Scone
Anything that deprives the world of a joke (even a bad one) is just plain wrong! |
