Poor education? This country provides education for free, and a good education at that contrary to what the media claim.

Some of the stuff I have read is inexcusable.

After we've eliminated dyslexia and predictive/phone typos. We then get to the functionally illiterate. I struggle to see what's attractive about someone with the grammar and spelling skills of a year four primary school student. When it gets to the point where I struggle to interpret messages I switch off. If English is your first language then perhaps you should pay more attention to how you use it.

I am 51 this year. Educated in the 60s and 70s. I also was left handed and made to use my right and it badly affected my handwriting. But NOT my spelling.

No one is perfect, 50% of the population does NOT have dyslexia and we are not talking about some simple errors.

We are talking about people who write so badly it could have been a blind chimpanzee bashing away at the keyboard.

And before someone says we're only hear to shag I say I don't open my door to meets and get down to it without talking. I can make no connection with people who are too fumb to spell even their own name. And if people consider that nasty - tough.

"anyone heard of dyslexia?????"

Approx 4% of the population have some form of dyslexia, depending on defonition it rises to 6-10%.

On here it seems to be about 70% as anyone who can't spell claims they have it.

"anyone heard of dyslexia?????"

When people have dyslexia it does not make them inarticulate morons. I have a few friends who are dyslexic. They are capable of stringing decent sentences together which are helpfully punctuated. Not utter drivel which I see in, thankfully, a few messages. Dyslexia should not be used as a convenient excuse. It's offensive to dyslexics to do so.

Phones do have predictive text which can be used to spell check. Mine does. That can throw up interesting errors which are easy to spot. Mine does it all the time. And the average school student has no recourse to spell check in exams yet there are adults on here who write in the most appalling manner I doubt they could even write their own names correctly in an exam. Worst of all is a total lack of even the most basic punctuation which renders many messages or comments unintelligible.

Like I said before, we have a very good FREE education system in this country. For much of whst I read there is simply no excuse. People make mistakes but not almost every single word! !

So was my dad. He went to a religious schoolwhere they had the same teacher for 7 years. He left school at 14. He could read, write and spell. Yes he made mistakes but not to the level I see today.

My grandmother left school in the early 1900s at the age of 12. She also could read, write and spell. And wrote in the most beautiful copperplate handwriting.

You are talking about one individual. I can name you dozens of my family and friends in response. What none of them do is turn their mother tongue into unintelligible crap even if they are not perfect. Its about having a little pride in how you communicate.

Seems like a lot of people don't see it as important to spell properly. I mean how difficult is it to differentiate between...

To...two...too

There...their..they're

Where...were ..we're

Your..you're

Etc (it's meaning is et cetera) not ect

Does...why 'dose'?

It is only basic English which so many cannot get right. Don't start me on allude/elude etc.

Obviously it's easy enough to spot typing errors and most of us have had predictive text change whole words.

I make predictive text errors in my posts and sometimes I leave out small words because my brain in racing ahead and my fingers don't catch up.

Id like to say that i try and overlook spellings and grammar but it wouldn't be true. I notice.

Now I'm not trying to be big headed but I feel it's fairly obvious from my posts that I'm not lacking in communication and educational skills. My partner is an intelligent man. We wouldn't feel at ease or have anything in common with people who perhaps are not similar.

The land of grey peas and bacon

I think I take it personally when digs are made about poor spelling as there is a lot of learning difficulties issues that run in both sides of the family. My parents made sure me and my sister did not fall into that trap. I for one hate text speak I find it such a lazy way to speak and spell... (I had ones of those as a kid). I do tolerate poor spelling and try and get to know the person. Of course I find myself correcting mistakes.. .I make a lot of spelling mistakes However I am always willing to learn....

I have worked with adults who have literacy issues and understand where you are coming from. But no one on here is really talking about that. It is the total lack of care in communication.

Messages like, 'wanna huk up wiv me' are unlikely to make a positive impact.

By not being able to spell very well does not mean that someone is lacking communication or educational skills and certainly doesn't make them unintelligent. I'm not great at spelling. actually I'm terrible but I'm sure there is subjects I know a lot more about that people who can spell. Everyone has strengths and weaknesses and surely people that are intelligent would understand that

When im on fabs with my pc i try to ensure spelling and grammar are correct. However if im on mobile like i am now bugger going back over message to correct typos. I think most people get the gist of whats being said and like what others have stated previously its a swinger site not an english grammar forum.

That hardly is an indication that they can communicate. Personally, that is important to me in a potential meet. I don't expect perfection. No one does. But I really doubt I would get on with anyone who types lyk dis. My choice.

"Poor education? This country provides education for free, and a good education at that contrary to what the media claim.

Some of the stuff I have read is inexcusable.

After we've eliminated dyslexia and predictive/phone typos. We then get to the functionally illiterate. I struggle to see what's attractive about someone with the grammar and spelling skills of a year four primary school student. When it gets to the point where I struggle to interpret messages I switch off. If English is your first language then perhaps you should pay more attention to how you use it.

"

This!

Communication is key, if I need the Rosetta Stone to decipher the message it kinds of kills the mood.

Personally I wouldn't start a thread on it, I simply use poor spelling, text speak as another filter and move on.

I would have to disagree to an extent. Certainly I have met a lot of nice guys who were not great at spelling, etc. But it was clear from the way they messaged that they weren't dimwitted. But I have met many (not for sex I might add) who wrote in the worst way and spoke exactly like that too. There was no point of common interest and they were most likely as bored with me as I was with them.

For me it is about potential compatability. Other people look for other things. That is up to them. We all use the site in a way which suits us best.

Personally I try and write and spell correctly, and as someone above posted, can sometimes make mistakes where my fingers can't keep up with my brain and will make an occasional error. Occasional typos, everyone does it. Predictive text, as soon as I get a phone it gets turned off, it seems to throw up more errors than it corrects and I find it extremely annoying. Language is always evolving, like it or not, and it seems to be evolving to fit the limited number of characters allowed by text messages. If you read any old english from 3-4 hundred years ago you'll be aware that it bears little resemblance to the english we use today. I don't get overly pedantic about it but I do notice it, I don't correct people generally, I have on occasion, usually to people who have ripped someone else apart for their spelling or grammar and then made glaring errors themselves and are trying to belittle others

A personnel dislike is the 'it's a swingers site ffs' and I've had this said to myself on here for posting in the lounge about non swinging subjects, even though it clearly states it is for general chat...

As someone who had to learn English I'm always very conscious of my grammar and spelling when posting and mailing I think in Welsh and translate things quickly in my mind. I always read things twice before clicking post/send. I still make mistakes, which include typos and flipin autocorrect lol

Im still amazed by some of the mistakes I see on here though - women instead of woman, hear instead of here, their instead of there and vice versa to name a few. I dont really have a problem if someone messages me with a mistake here and there but I don't particularly like txt spk in a message. Takes too long to figure it out for a start lol

I did get worked up a few nights ago when someone criticized and made fun my English in a thread! but that's what the block button is for, thankfully

SunnyOptimist.....Isnt this two words? if it's one word then the use of a capital letter mid-sentence is incorrect surely?

Maybe you will describe it as a user name but the same rules apply.....in reality I couldnt care less, its about peoples personalities, if they are friendly polite and have a good sense of humour they will get alot further than if they can spell with an obnoxious attitude.

Within 10 min of where I stay there are 2 towns that I've seen the signs for everyday for the last 15 years and I still can't spell them

Some Scottish examples

Anstruther

Auhenshuggle

Auchtermuchty

Ecclefechan

Kilconquhar

Milngavie

And if spelling them is hard saying them right is impossible
