We as a country are walking ourselves into a "1984 Orwellian society".
The freedoms we have fought for over 100s of years, are been slowly taken away. What we watch, read, listen to, eat, drink talk about are all slowly being controlled.
Who is doing this?
Well the answer is that we are doing it to ourselves.
Do you care that this is happening? |

IS it happening? I don't see it.
I have no more restrictions on my life or daily activities than 30-40 years ago. |

"yes i do care, there are too many control freaks."
Problem is, we are the control freaks. We want phones tapped, we want letters and emails read. We want to feel safe.
Problem is, to feel safe we are creating a prison for ourselves.
We should look back in history. We should look at what happen in Russia. We should look what happen in Germany in the 1920s 1930s.

O also op, I'm not sure how much of what we read and see is being controlled. Rather 90per cent of people aren't interested in knowing what is happening in the world around them, unless it's something shiny and fun like the royal baby. News organisations are ultimately profit led businesses. The exception being the bbc but even they have to justify their license fee and therefore appeal to the masses rather than actually reporting on actual news. As for being told what to eat and drink? Other than my parents telling me I must eat my greens I've never been told what to eat. There is a lot of advise and literature out there, but you don't have to be a drone and follow the crowd, do what you want.

The primary responsibility of Government is the protection of its citizens, therefore it makes sense that it sells us protection in the form of laws, rules, monitoring, spying, etc. It also means feeding us information telling us we are constantly at threat and we are only introducing these measures for your own protection. Sort of a job creation scheme really. Oh and a money making scheme too. |

Governments are there to control the populace.
They do this by passing things called laws !
Without laws society would be chaos and anarchic.
Harking back to past times is pointless in todays information and technological era.
We have to learn to live and react to the society around us, keeping it safe and peaceful for everyone |

Yeah we are safe and secure in our little cells. Happy for the government to control what we watch, read, eat and drink.

Pmsl !
Call me lazy, uninterested or just too damn busy in my own little world - but I've never felt controlled, manipulated , spied on, dictated to, pressurised or that I have any less freedoms than I should!!

There is no secret society that is doing the watching and controlling. It is us ourselves. We are so wrapped up in fear that we are doing it to protect ourselves.
The issue is the fear is being created by the media and by our own brains.
We believe the every bloke in the street is a peado or a terrorist. Though the facts are that 99.9999% of them are not.
Every youth is in a gang, and everyone is on drugs and is going to mug you.
Every car on the road is speeding and driven by a driver that is not as good as you.
The controls we are putting in place are not making us safer, they are only making us feel safer. The facts are that we are more dangerous to ourselves than over people are. |

I can't see any credible argument to substantiate your argument, which appears to digress in itself.
Are you suggesting we live in a police state, monitored in all we do or we live in a state of fear, stirred up by our own unsubstantiated insecurities and prejudices ?
Most of us go about our business on a daily basis completely unhindered by society, unless we chose to cause problems.
There will be cases of intrusive authority, sometimes acting in an inappropriate way as a result of human interaction.
By and large we are kept safe by our infrastructure and laws.
Do I feel afraid on a daily basis ? No....go to Syria and witness the murder of innocents or the Congo etc and see their collapsing societies without the supposed spying culture and tell me its safer.
Coincidentally do I think everyone's speeding and I'm a better driver ? Most of us speed, sometimes I'm the better driver, sometimes I'm not, which gives me the social intelligence to realise I don't have to flick the bird at everyone who messes up as I probably did the same recently.
Am I being spied on ? I couldn't give a flying frog...crack on. |

No I don't care....
I'm not worried by it in the slightest. Nor am I worried about any potential examples dreamt up through the paranoia of those who feel we are being systematically oppressed and that out liberty and freedom to live in a country that protects it’s citizen and try’s to uphold moral value is being taken away us …..
The world is changing and the access and restriction to all its information needs to adapt to protect the important things in life and if by doing so some computer bank somewhere needs to hold a dossier of which web site I wank too or what type of bread I buy when online shopping I could give a rats crap…
If big brother is watching me he'll get bored before I do....

Do I think we're being spied on and monitored? Yes
Do I think it's worse and do we have
Less freedom? No
When was this time when we were free? Was in the 1930's and 40'sduring massive propaganda? During the 50s where blacks and Catholics couldn't live in certain places? The 1970's &80's where freedom was only for the wealthy? I'd say now with the FOi and Internet we have more information than ever before about how we're monitored and more control over that information than ever before.
As for food and drink I'm afraid that doesn't make any sense at all. |

Well if it wasn't for the naughty Food Standards Agency we could eat salmonella laden eggs, fish the seas empty of fish, and re-label out of date food so no-one knows how stale their food is. And as for pasteurising milk to prevent TB, how very dare they! |

Then were not creating a police state its simply fear, which has existed since year dot
Examples of fear in the past are :
Do not leave the cave or harry the bastard will get you
Do not swim in the pond or the creature will eat you.
Do not eat a popular fast food chain thick shake its made of bulls semen.
Fear is great, it allows numpties to wear no fear t-shirts and for blokes to greatly exaggerate how brave they are in order to impress birds on fab. Stories like that time I was in south Armagh with the path finders blah blah blah.
Anyway I digress....there was no spy cam in my iPhone but now its dismantled |

Who is 'us ourselves'? that is a massive generalisation. Who exactly to you mean when you refer to 'ourselves' I'm a firm believer in the old adage...if you have nothing to hide you have nothing to worry about...although I do believe we are being manipulated into what we think, mostly by the media, but also to some extent by our own and other countries governments who in turn are the ones manipulating the media. Oh and don't get me started on the 'Thought Police' |

What I find the most interesting is that people seem to be just waking up to the idea that we live in a 'surveillance society'. Its been happening for years and years and years.
From the traffic camera that reads number plates, to the CCTV systems with facial recognition, to mobile phones with 'Check in' facilities and GPS devices in every one. Now we have black box recorders being actively installed in cars to monitor speed, position, distance etc.
This doesn't make an 'Orwellian' future. Its how you choose to use it that can make it a force for good or evil.
You could argue, after all, that only those who are doing wrong have something to fear?
Or, you could ask - Who watches the Watchmen, to make sure the system isn't abused?

"We as a country are walking ourselves into a "1984 Orwellian society".
The freedoms we have fought for over 100s of years, are been slowly taken away. What we watch, read, listen to, eat, drink talk about are all slowly being controlled.
Who is doing this?
Well the answer is that we are doing it to ourselves.
Do you care that this is happening?"
Yes, I care. Obviously, a lot of other people wouldn't believe that it is happening... that's fine too.
You're right. We are doing it to ourselves. By electing the same bunch each and every time is going to end in disaster for us. Too bad we're not like the Muslims or Arabs in those parts of the World that decide when they've had enough, they've had enough - unless of course they're quelled by their governments iron fist :D
Anyway... look at the bright side, enjoy it while it lasts. Only a matter of time before we're in the same boat as Greece and Cyprus, and I'm not joking about that. |

A vast amount of information is collected. Automated systems scan for key words.
A conversation with " My new car goes like a bomb. and including the phrase "lost my vibrator, had to rifle through my cupboard" could be enough to put you on a surveillance list, especially if you were of particular racial origin or had travelled to certain countries.
Paranoid? I was involved in a pressure group trying for change through democratic means. We were not right wing, we were labelled subversive, infiltrated by Special Branch, lists of names were stolen by the Government and my name was on one of them - this was pre mass computerisation.
Yes sleepwalking into our cosy little cells like good little sheep.
The attitude that only the guilty have something to hide is silly - I reckon most on here have a few things they don't want publicised!
Oooh, almost a Thursday rant! |
