estimated bill arrives, heart attack ensues, check meter readings and phone them through, new bill arrives and its more than half less than estimated bill,
so how did they "estimate we had used £217.32 worth of electric when in actual fact it was £82.12??
wonder how many people cough up for the estimated bill without first checking ?? |

Definitely not me as mine sends me a link every month to read my meter, they then sort out the bill so I am only paying for what I have used. Cannot afford to just cough up and given I am on my own at the moment, I would wonder at that price if I was paying for the street   |

Pretty sure anyone with half a brain can understand what an estimated bill is. That they are required to inform the bill payer that the reading could be wrong (hence estimated) and to supply their own readings should suffice.
Anyone that coughs up for an estimated reading deserves to have their money taken from them. |

That's a bit harsh. You can always get the extra payment back even after the next reading. Just because someone pays the estimate by mistake don't mean they are stupid like u suggest

Energy companies aren't bothered if you pay on actual read or estimate....
They just want direct debit access......then monthly budgeting.....and then the web begins and 90% of the population won't complain as can't get through the automated telephone systems....

If you don't bother to give a reading (and if you are with a supplier that makes it complex to do so change supplier - it takes me a less than a minute to give gas and electricity) then I'm not sure why you would be so annoyed by an estimated reading? It is estimated on factors such as size of property and previous usage. And the more readings you give, the more accurate they become and common sense is that they will err on the side of caution and over estimate.

Not everyone has access to bank accounts that allow DD either. As you are usually charged less for paying by DD it's a bit of a double whammy. |

My father who is 86 paid his estimated electricity bill, because he is partially sighted he was unable to read the meter and my Mum is unable to climb steps to reach it, we were away and he was afraid of what would happen if he didn't pay. Are you suggesting he deserves to have his money taken from him?

we have sufficient fund, but we don't DD Because it enables them to take what they want. Defo not the best way to pay bills. |
