Following in from the chafing thread. A few of you suggest talc, which I used to advocate until very recently.
It seems that talc used in close proximity to your vagina can increase risk of cervical cancer by 25%.
I'd never heard of that till recently. |

For fuck sake. Is there anything left that DOESN'T cause cancer these days? Write into the Daily Fail so they can add it to their list of 'Things That Cause Cancer'.
Life is too short to be worrying about these things... |

Talc was used on babies for years without reports of incidences of cervical cancer in later life.
I'd be more concerned about a willy without a condom in the vagina. |

Comes from an old study by an American Cancer charity, they looked for links to Ovarian cancer in women.
Very little real proof came from the study, but during the three or four years it took them to compile their data the damage was done and talc sales plummeted due to the scare. |

Yeah, I heard about this years ago too.
I thought it was well known at this stage. |

Nope. When I researched this it seemed fairly common knowledge. I can hear people in the thread scoffing and yeah yeah but dont shoot the messenger. I thought 25% was a high risk though. At least if you're informed you can decide what's best for you. I'm just a bit surprised that this kind of information is not given at cervical screening sessions. |

"Apologies it's ovarian cancer. It googles very easily on several reputable websites NHS included. "
Having worked in Pharmacy for some time before changing career I strongly suggest that you take the time to read the Cancer Research UK website, talc was removed from many chemist shelves for a few months in the late 90's but after studies it was proved to be inconclusive and low risk compared to sexual contact etc. |

There was a recent (in the last month or so) article in The Guardian about it so it's still a current topic.
If I recall correctly, the article advised that, if using, use sparingly and apply directly to skin and not to the preferred choice of undergarment. |

The thread is really about awareness. I was until recently not aware myself. Any women who read this can either dismiss, or like myself go and research and decide their own conclusions.
I agree that there are lots of things we use / eat / drink in life that are potentially harmful and given that information you decide what you want to do.
But if you don't know there's a potential risk in the first place ... |

Way over Yonder, that's where I'm bound |
Talc, deodorants, eating, drinking plastic water, breathing, using a towel and putting your arse in the bath all cause cancer. So, hold your breath because everyone will be smelly and live longer.
Seriously, lots of things are a risk. Know what yours are and make an adult choice. I don't use talc because it's dusty and messy. I do use antiperspirant because I don't want to be sweaty and smelly. |

There are a number of (usually smaller) charities in the cancer field which operate on the basis of fear using the 'this should scare you but if you give us lots of money, we can find a cure'. |
