I’ve slept in some pretty grim places but safe in the knowledge mine was a temporary ordeal unlike the people for who those dreadful conditions were an ongoing reality with little hope of better times ahead.  |

I don't mind so much for one night/swinging meets, but holidays have to be 4* at the very least...plus I've stayed at that place a coupla times and its not too bad for a chain hotel, least its not a Travelodge |

When we checked into the third hotel in town which had the least bed bug splats on the wall, we were so happy to find only one bird eating spider (they can jump eight foot and are as big as you hand) and a snake and when we turned on the light in the bathroom and the floor went from black to white as the cockroaches scuttled off,!
Saying that we did an illegal trek followng an orang Utah family the week after and that prepared us for the trek, in fact the hotel was way worse than the jungle! That was my best ever holiday so I suppose if you want to see what not many have seen you have to grin and bare it! |

I like the idea of seeing Orang Utans in the wild but I couldn't do the rest just yet. Maybe one day...
The nearest I have come to that is travelling around New Zealand and staying at hostels. Urggh! |

Sorry to hear that. I am sure you appreciate what you have now all the more.
I remember when we were homeless when I was a child. We got moved into B&B hostel for 6 months with all of us in one room with two beds.

Well I'm another prissy princess and consider budget hotels and flying economy are roughing it. I've just got back from a business trip in India and i saw poverty we can't even imagine over here.
However for me if there is no 24x7 room service and the sheets aren't at least 300 thread count, I'm not a happy girl. I'm very lucky to have what I have and I know I'm a lot more fortunate then some. |

Worst for me was a dodgy bedsit/hostel in my younger days when I was skint after losing my job. But being a military brat I generally cope ok. Been camping loads n love it, even an Easter scout camp in the pouring rain was fantastic fun. But yes it is different when you know you're going home to a hot shower n warm bed. I've friends who've been homeless n my uncles worked with poor and refugees in Africa so hope I do appreciate how lucky I am to have a proper roof over my head |

I don't even rough it while camping. We always have electric hook up. I have a double height airbed with a king size duvet 
Hairdryer and straighteners go with me, as does a kettle and toaster for the morning |

Tbf, like several of the posters. I ended up in hostels, living rough and stuffing newspaper under my clothes to keep warm on the streets.. So now most things are luxury..

I had to leave my flat after i split with my ex. I couldnt afford another flat so had to rent a room. The landlord was my old school teacher , his wife an alcoholic. It was a nightmare the house was dirty. I had to grin and bear it while trying to save to move. One day i walked through the front door went flying and banged my head

I have always been very fortunate, however I am very fussy and hate "roughing" it but I think of myself as a chameleon and although I hate camping I can without fuss.
I do think for anyone taking this thread or the sentiment out of context, just because some have more than others in a "comfortable" way, you do not know what other hardships or sorrow they may have suffered in their life. |

I had a hard life when I was younger. I choose not to now. I have things so even though I have very little money now I had more once and I can choose to continue to live well with my mattress protectors. |

either living in council flats for a few months, for if us in a one bed.
when I moved out of Winchester and three last night everything has been packed and moved out so I slept on the floor with a coat as a blanket in the living room. Just had the carpets cleaned so was a bit soggy.
Or when I moved into my new house and for two weeks slept on a mattress on the floor as I didn't see the point in setting up my bed till the carpets were in. |

So true...I have friends who APPEAR to others to have had it easy but I know things they've gone thru. No such thing as an easy life IMHO we all go thru shit at some stage.

My aunt had someone make a snotty comment when her eldest started school about single mums. (70's when it weren't so common), how awful they must have felt when someone who knew my aunt told this woman aunt was a widow and THAT'S why she was a single mum |

All I could hear was constant wind and rain was thinking at the time. The tent could come off the floor here. Still stayed out all night though |

That is the wife all over, what wrong with sleeping in a tent, it is fun.
For me roughing it is going to the dragon rally, held in Wales in the third weekend in feb. It was so cold I slept in my biking leathers, now I know why the organisers handed out a small bottle of whisky. |

When my sister was being treated for leukemia when we were kids, my parents took it in turns to be at the hospital with her in Leeds, 3 day stints. They had this accommodation for families to stay over, bedrooms, communal kitchen and bathrooms etc. Sometimes I'd stay there too when my mum was there, sometimes at home with my dad, sometimes with other relatives. The not knowing where I was going or where I'd be sleeping that night was what bothered me the most (aside from my big sister being ill of course), that was from age 7 to 11 or so.
So I guess roughing it for me is not having a place to belong. |

"Travelodge was alright. Guess im easily pleased, was my first hotel meet, Holiday Inn was nice, Ibis ok - snotty receptionist"
I never sleep at the Ibis and the beds creak but it's handy for afternoons. |

Taking the kids to London to see their dad for a week and having to take it in turns in the bed one night, on the floor the following night. Aside from both being very uncomfortable, it was also incredibly noisy as the block of flats was on top of a co-op and the milk was delivered at 6 am every morning. Scary too as the window fitment was the length of the flat
Staying in a caravan with one of my exes as the bed wasn't wide enough and he snored so loud that I used to wander off and sleep in the lounge.
Staying in an old bedford camper van that only had 2ft 6in beds at Dungeoness with a chemical bin, huge thunderstorm arrived in the middle of the night and no lights around so had to wait until lightening struck to go to the beach where my kids dad, his girlfriend and my son were in a tent to make sure they hadn't be swept away by the sea.
Not having a mattress protector is no big deal as I never had one for years, used to put an old sheet over it first. |
