"So I've never been into sc fi but I just whatched blade runner. Can anyone recommend any films that are set in the not too distant future"
Starwars is set a long time ago so no good. Try something like 'minority report', I guess '2001 a space odyssey' is now alternative history rather than set in the future although it was when it was made, 'I, Robot' is good, if only for Will Smith in the shower, 'Ai' is a good film about a robotic boy, the 2 new Star Trek films are good but set a bit more into the future. I really enjoyed 'Prometheus'.... |

"Oh and Serenity (but you might want to watch the tv series Firefly first )"
Oh yes!!!
Serenity, one of my favourites!!
You don't need to see the series first though.
I first saw the movie, was blown away, had to see the series then |

OMG...I've suddenly developed the urge to track down a copy of .....The Martian Chronicles with Rock Hudson and Roddy McDowell......
I seem to remember seeing it many years ago and thinking it was quite deep at the time and that I should watch it again sometime in the future,,,
It will probably be a crock of shite now,,,, but hey,,,,!!!!

Flesh Gordon Shame it did not have Brian Blessed in that version
Serious but dated, how about Soylent Green?
As someone posted above about 2001, many older films are alternate futures now, but how about 1984? Day of the Triffids? Lots of golden oldies about. |

Someone said Soylent Green, I'd also recommend The Omega Man with Chrlton Heston (the remake, I Am Legend with Will Smith wasn't too shoddy either)
I thought Prometheum was shite myself |

I quite like Moon and also Sunshine. The Sunshine theme music is amazing! but it really works once you see the film.
I haven't seen Serenity yet but would like too. For some reason I wasn't so keen on Prometheus. |

Women only watch pitch black and the chronicles of riddick for vin diesel. At least that's what Lynne. I have to get her off the sofa with a fish slice. Made my day when I found out he was gay. |

"Lol that serenity is set 500 years in the future that sounds a long way off to me"
It's not all super high tech though, it's all like making do and rickety old spaceships. It's sometimes like a western in space. |

One is on film 4 now. Aliens, been on a hour but worth a look you will get the gen idea. I watch them over and over if they are on |

If you're looking for a classic in our general time period, try The Day the Earth Caught Fire (1961). I watched the movie of I Am Legend (2007) recently and liked that a lot. Typing "great sci-fi movies" into Google throws up some useful lists. |
