As talks about giving MP's an 11 % pay rise happen
The number of people using food banks in the last 3 months has risen 300 %
Yes , some MP's are saying it would be unfair
But why is this even being contemplated
We are all in it together my arse |

Don't forget all the additional payments on top of the salary for sitting on various panels and committees! And then on top of those the incredible expenses.
Frighten yourself and look on the IPSA (Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority) website and see the mind boggling amounts for these expenses. |

True, after some 'consultation' it'll probably end up with them generously taking only a 5-7% increase, and we'll be expected to be grateful for their sacrifice. But I wouldn't mind 5% of a twice national average salary, rather than 1% of a national or below national average wage, which is what is expected for us. |

Being an MP isn't much of a job. Always in the public eye and mostly away from home.
You can't even banjo a Tory MP without getting huckled by the cops.
All for less money than a middle ranking cop, teacher or doctor. Less, even, than the guy at IPSA who only 'works' 2 days a week. |

Compared to MP's in many other countries such as Germany, our MP's are not paid highly enough.
I say pay them a wage that reflects the job they are doing, but ban them from being directors or consultants to commercial companies. |

To be honest,if we paid them what they are worth.
Then anything over minimum wage would be a bonus.
A 100% bunch of lazy gits that seek only to fill their own pockets.
The top dog thinks a guy winning a tennis match should get a knighthood, just about says it all really. |

Why is MPs pay not linked to someone (of use) in a profession ?
Such as, MPS pay is set at same rate a Chief Fire Officer, for instance. Then if MPs want to impose a public sector payfreeze, it will affect them as well.
They should also, just get the same level of expenses as the Fire Officer and be barred from having any other paid employment, or bribes, kickbacks, call it what you will.

Like it or not an MP could and in many cases can secure a much higher income elsewhere. People who "sit on their arses" don't get elected. They've got to get off them and do something. So if you think it's so easy, give it a go and take it in. |

The point of the post is this-
At a time when there are people in this country reliant on food banks
Local authorities are having to cut cut cut
How can MP's justify a raise in pay ?
Let alone 11%
Most civil servants have had to accept a pay freeze for 5 or so years
It's disgusting ... END OF |

And after the public insisted that MP's didn't organise their own pay they handed over to an Independant body who have put forward this pay rise along with cuts in salary and pensions as well as the payment when they lose or step down from their seat. Strangely this is what the public demanded. Oops |

Putting the 'cum' in Eboracum |
MPs are civil servants. Civil Servants have had their pay frozen for the last three years, and no end in sight. So they should have the same rules. As a MP gets paid £60k + a year I think they'll manage. I get £25k a year and really don't manage!
Its our own fault though. After the expenses scandal we took their rights to award their own pay rises away and gave it to an independent body and guess who is recommending the payrise? That very independent body. |

So replace them! Become an mp. If your views are popular and you believe you can do it better, crack on and do it. Salary is good, perks are good and apparently they don't do anything all day so it should suit all of us. Or is it easier to stand back and blame them? |

I don't think they are. I think they 'may' be supposed to be public servants but not Civil Servants.
If they were Civil Servants, we wouldn't be having this problem. They'd be on a pay scale and that'd be it.

I think MPs are classed as self employed.
Nearly every job that I know of has a "job description" which outlines the qualifications required for that job and what the job entails. I'd love to see the job description for MPs !!!

No idea. I'm not party to all the facts. I don't believe they get paid a lot. But then i don't have this odd british concept that if someone makes more than me its unfair or wrong! Certainly they don't get paid a lot for people with comparable responsibility. Their job selection is also pretty strict as well. After they get selected to stand they then compete against a group of people for their seat with a huge chance of failure and therefore no job or money. |

So far clegg and milliband have said they wont take it. Not suprisingly cam the sham is not saying what he will do.
At next election which is when it will come into effect all prospective mps should declare if they accepting the increase.
In addition to this millibsnd proposed cap of 5k on individual donations to political parties yet again cameron said no.
How can we all be in it together when on same day bedroom tax came into effect the richest folk got 110k tax rebate.
Says it all reallly. |

There are no facts .. It's simple . There are proposals to give an mp a pay rise of 11%
My question to you is considering the unemployment rate
Cuts to services
Many people not even getting a 1 % pay rise
Is it justifiable for them to get an 11% raise?
How many times in your life have you had an % raise so big ?
So once again ... Is it justifiable ?
Yes or no?

How many times have I had that big a pay rise?
3 times I can think of
One was 15% however what I earn isn't relevant nor how big my pay hike was.
Do I think it's justifiable? Again I don't know as I don't have all the facts of the independent review.
Do I think it's reasonable given they will be losing some benefits and pension contributions and golden goodbyes and give their salary compared to people with similar responsibility. Then the amount is reasonable. The 11% is a red herring. It's the amount of money not the differential between before and after.
This system was insisted upon by the media and the electorate. |

....."After they get selected to stand they then compete against a group of people for their seat with a huge chance of failure and therefore no job or money"...,
Except the number of people is about 30, with about 5 with a real chance of success. Higher if it's a safe seat and not marginal. They probably already have jobs prior to standing for election and a great many MPs are wealthy.
I wonder why the government said recently that the rise in the use of foodbanks was not related to service cuts?
I think even the proposal of a 11% increase is a disgrace.
It's called 'thumbing your nose'. |

Honest MPs are like Unicorns, everyones heard of them, but no bugger ever saw one.
Asking people to stand as an independant candidate is not realistic at all, and would serve no purpose even if you won the seat.
If several hundred Labour seats cant stop the theft of the countries assets, then a single seat has how much chance ??? |

I just don't get this argument that MP's are underpaid compared to elsewhere. Maybe elsewhere they do a better job representing their people & not just the wealthiest in society????
But more importantly, if you don't like the pay - don't take the job; isn't that the way it works for everyone else?
Also, if you've imposed cuts throughout society, putting many in to dire poverty, whilst putting at least 50k more in to the pockets of millionaires; don't accept an 11% pay rise - simples!!!
Jeez, some people!!! |

Is it? When did they decide to go ahead with the 11%?
They also suggested this
A new pension on a par with other parts of the public sector, moving from a final-salary to career-average scheme, which Ipsa says will save taxpayers nearly £2.5m a year
Scrapping "resettlement payments", which were worth up to £64,766 for long-serving MPs still of working age, the first £30,000 of which was tax-free. and introducing "more modest" redundancy packages, available only to those who contest their seat and lose
A "tighter regime" of business costs and expenses - including an end to the £15-a-night meal allowance and taxis home after late sittings
Is that all "disgusting" too? They will earn more but it will be balanced in other areas.
And just to emphasise this is an INDPENDANT body not MPs who've suggested these changes. |

I think the whole report from the Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority needs to be read to appreciate the whole story.
There are clear movements being mooted to change the way that MP's are paid with regards to Salaries, Perks, Expenses, Pensions, Death Benefits....
The basic salary is just one facet of the whole report.
But of course the baying crowd will only see the 11% as they won't want to see the bits of the report that don't suit them. |

I've read the report and understand how much is going to be saved and the changes made will "clean up politics"
But once again is it right for MP's to be given a double figure raise when nurses and other public service workers are expected to manage on a pay freeze ?
Is that fair ???
Is it fair that the people who are asking us to tighten our belts are getting a rise?

We can't have it both ways.
My understanding is following the MPs expenses scandal an independent body was set up with responsibility for MPs' pay. This proposed pay increase is their idea: nothing to do with the MPs.
The public demanded, the public got, so we can hardly complain if an independent body suggests rewarding them with more than they would have dared giving themselves.
In an ironic way, it's rather amusing! |
