Just seen this article on the local paper's website....
Burlesque performers have been left reeling after Hebden Royd Town Council banned them from using Hebden Bridge Picture House.
But the town council’s picture house committee has defended its decision to vote against letting Hebden Bridge Burlesque Festival use the town’s historic cinema and denied it was censoring the group.
The organisers of the festival wanted to use the venue, which the town council runs, for a one-off high-end gala performance featuring big names as part of their 2014 event but have been refused on the grounds that “many people feel it is demeaning to women, and raises issues of gender equality”.

What do you lot think?
I just have to laugh at "raises issues of gender equality", it's in Hebden Bridge..... The Lesbian capital of the UK! (google it) |

No.
In fact the Burlesque shows I've seen have been nothing short of empowering for the performers, who came together to perform for a Cancer charity, were from many different backgrounds and presented a fantastic celebration of the female form. |

"We went to a burlesque show last Saturday. There wasn't many men in the audience. The women all enjoyed it. "
I'm sure Dita Von Tease feels demeaned when she gets her huge fees for flouncing about in a corset on stage. |

If Dita Von Tease feels in any way demeaned, I'm happy to provide an excellent one-on-one counselling service to her. |

Burlesque is supposed to be a celebration of the female form so how is it demeaning? The problem is someone in the council has obviously thought they were strippers and not performers. I've gone to see burlesque a few times and each time the audience has had more than a fair share of women who can't have felt that demeaned. |

I posted a thread about sexual objectification, specifically about if swinging led to an increase in the objectification of the opposite sex - sadly it didn't get many responses |

I am a burlesque dancer and no I don't think it is demeaning to women, it empowers women, the women in my burlesque class do either the whole nipple tassel thing or just stay dressed, when people think about burlesque they just think of striping but it is not like that. |

"Small Northern town, still in the dark ages me thinks x"
Hebden would have to gain a few centuries to get to the dark ages, it's a weird weird place, I ride through there now and again and people stop me to ask what them round things are |
