Maybe. But if I have an urgent work call or my daughter rings im going to answer. If Sainsburys or any other supermarket refuse to serve me I'd walk off.

I think it is. If the assistant did it whilst scanning items I'd be irritated. Basic manners cost nothing and make people feel respected.....also has a knock on effect.

But on the reverse of this, so many people on check outs don't utter a word whilst serving you - so the respect really should go both ways! Z

Yes, i consider it rude not giving the person you're dealing with 100%. Though on the other side of the coin i find it absolutely disgraceful when a checkout operator suddenly starts talking to the one at the next til about Clocking off/how busy/any change etc. If i'm giving you my custom the least you can do is bloody pay me some attention! (Sorry, rant over.)

Yes it is. It makes you distracted, you pack slower and generally irritate everyone else whos behind you. Unless you're giving instructions on defusing a bomb with less than a minute on the timer, really, it could wait until you're through the checkout...and if the call is THAT important / urgent why, for the love of God, are you in a queue in bloody Tesco?

I also don't 'get' people who make a call while standing in the checkout queue who say:

'Hello, Yes, I'm in the queue at the checkout - is there anything else we want...'

Because, you really could have done that BEFORE you got in the queue!

This, corner shops seem the worst.

There's also the customer service desks in larger shops where they answer the phone while there is a queue of people waiting to be dealt with.

According to one possibly ex Sainsbury employee it is as she refused to serve a customer before she ended her call saying it was company policy.

It isn't and Sainsbury have apologised and offered a £10 voucher as way of an apology.

I am rarely on the phone when being serves but if I am I interrupt my conversation to be polite to the member of staff, say hello etc.

Down our local shop the lady is always in the phone to someone when she serves and instead of telling you how much it comes to she just points at the till. That really pisses me off

So do we need a board at the start of the checkout with do's and don'ts

I'm usually very chatty with whoever is serving me as I like a bit of banter. But I object to anyone in this scenario telling me I can't answer my own phone.

I think its extremely rude and as others have said people deserve respect. Both counter assistant and customer. I would never talk on phone if I was serving a customer and if i felt the need to talk to someone on my mobile I would finish the call before entering the shop or wait till I got out again. If my phone rang when i was at the till I would reject it and call them back immediately after I was finished. Lets face it....what did we do in the day and age of when we didn't have mobile phones!!!!

I have been in this position before and I have said to the customer "I'll wait till your finished your call".

Unless the call was of an genuinely urgent nature I fail to see why anyone would need to display such contemptuous behaviour.

If I was working on a checkout and the customer decided to hold a telephone conversation whilst being served be me.... I’d simply stop processing their items until they finished their call...

But the question I ask myself is when did we, as a society, accept the cultural shift to having to be 'always available' to all and sundry via our mobile phone - to the point where it interrupts and disrupts the thing we are doing at the time.

20 years ago society ran just fine without the need to answer every question right here, right now. This always available / instant answer communication culture is making us lazy, forgetful and physically isolated from each other.

ive worked on a checkout and agree with all previous coments....

there are alot of staff and customers who are ll mannered and so rude in their approach. bad manners...bad moods...problems in yr life should be left at the door for both staff/customers. what has to be remembered here is that without customers staff wldnt be needed...and without staff customers wldnt be able to walk out without theur goods.... a smile and a quick hi doesnt hurt anyone.

as for chatting on the phone at a chk out it didnt bother me if they where taking an urgent call....what use to crack me up was if they purposely rang out as they were being served...now thats rude in my opinion

I'd be finding another shop if she did that to me......

... and I'm bloody annoyed with Sainsbury's not backing up their member of staff. Okay, give her a ticking off for stating something was company policy when it was not, but not for letting a rude, ignorant individual know that their lack of respect to another person is out of order...

ted.

And if they did wouldn't that open the flood gates to sainsbury employees making up whatever policies they wanted

Company policies are just that, policies of the company and not the whim of an individual.

I agree with this and it is rude. Admittedly I have done this and I was being rude.

None of us would expect others to do it to us, it does feel a little demeaning to the other person. Being at a checkout doesn't take very long.

We have all got stories of rude shop assistants but I bet they have far more stories to tell of us, the customer. I haven't done this very often, but i am being ignorant the times I have.

whatever it is, if it's that urgent there's absolutely nothing you can do whilst standing in a que. All anyone needs to do is call back once they've gone through checkout and out the shop. That's why they're called a MOBILE phone!! How did all these people manage in the days when all we had was land lines?

Yep...... I don’t remember seeing queues of anxious people all standing next to public phone boxes waiting impatiently for yet another opportunity that day just to call their family and friends so they can tell them they are still alive and kicking and that once the call ends they will be doing things and stuff!.

My absolute, utter, teeth grinding, piss boiling hatred is reserved for people who use their mobiles in cinemas.

I mean, having paid £8-£15 for a seat, why , for the love of God why, would you spend two hours NOT looking at the big screen, but rather texting with your mates, annoying everyone else in the vicinity with our bright glowing screen?

I personally think it's rude to be on the phone when you're dealing with another person: full stop!

It gives the impression they're not worthy of your full attention: it's one of my bete noirs.

Ask yourself, would you take a phone call if you were being presented to Her Majesty? Of course you wouldn't, so why not afford others the same respect?

Not only is it rude to do that when interacting with someone else - no matter what the situation - it also shows the world how low you are prepared to let your own personal standards drop.

Also, it is never acceptable to use somebody else's lack of standards to justify lowering your own..

Rise above the world and the world will look up to you!

Yes it is rude. But it is just as rude for the people on checkouts to chat with each other whilst putting your shopping through the till and this they do on a very regular basis. So if thats okay for them to chat with their mate whilst checking your items then they can't moan if you get a call. After all the ones that i have experienced doing it are generally chatting about a night out and who they got off with whilst scanning my beans .. lol

Absolutely rude.

I've been on both sides of the till and behind people who are on their phone in front of me.

It shows the general deterioration of basic good manners that is happening more now.

Please & Thank you seem like a foreign language to many people.

You don't think 'some person doing their job' deserves some basic manners? I find that incredibly sad. That 'some person' has a basic right to be treated as an equal by you the customer. It's just bad manners to treat them as 'some person doing their job' like they don't matter. A little respect goes a long way.

Which implies you have a limited understanding of levels of social interaction, roles and relationships.... and considering the line of work you claim to undertake I am not sure if I find that surprising or alarming.

You are involved in that person doing their job at that time... it's not the same as sitting on a bench whilst a road sweeper does his job around you. You are part of the transaction process, whether you want or need to talk to them is irrelevant.

I have to say I think it is really rude, I will only answer my phone after any dealings I am having with other people finishes, if I was on the phone I wouldn't join the queue until my call had ended, and I expect the same in return, I have in the past hung up customer service phones when they've answered it while dealing with me, what makes that person on the phone more important than me?

It's not unusual for it to happen to me when I'm visiting a customer for a formal business meeting and they have to take an call. That doesn't offend me at all. In fact sometimes it's a welcome break for me to take stock of what's been said already and compose my thoughts for when they return. Their head is inevitabely in different places and I'm then in control of the meeting and structure it to suit myself.

But the checkout people may not be yapping on the phone but often yap to each other.. seriously rude.

Unless waiting for literally a life or death phone call (i havent been yet) i never have and never would answer my phone in a shop full stop. But i have seen checkout people neing rude or ignorant in that way much much more often than i have seen customers doing it tbh.

the fact is if I need to take a call I need to take it. I don't find it rude. I rarely speak to people like that anyway... I like to keep myself to myself. I always find it amusing when the person in front of me starts chatting away to the checkout person and therefore delaying everyone. I will say my pleases and thank yous and not chat.

And I'm very good at my job... just don't see why it's rude. I will acknowledge anything asked of me.. like help with packing.. and ask the person on the phone to wait while I pay. Just don't need to chat.

No the fact is you choose to take it, you don't need to take it - not unless you have some uncontrollable compulsion to answer ringing phones.

Your not Batman or carrying the store's defibrillator.

None of the calls you have taken have resulted in you leaving your shopping and running out of the store to deal with an emergency - if they had you'd have said so.

People who choose to use their phones at checkouts choose to ignore social etiquette - it shouldn't be so difficult to understand why that is considered rude.

actually seeing as I can not ignore calls coming in then yes I do need to.. normally it will be a work call (which I do actually have to take) or a call from my children's school. Rarely does that not require my immediate attention.

I consider it just a part of life.. and if someone thinks it rude I certainly won't lose sleep over it.

Me not answering a call when I am on calls could mean the difference between life and death to someone being directed to me.. so forgive me for thinking that is more important than idle chit chat.

I find not answering phones more rude... And yes I answer these calls at social situations too.

Although as mostly I shop at 2am when it's unlikely I will get a call it's not really here nor there is it... And why do I go at that time... ?

so I don't have to interact with people while doing something I utterly hate doing. would do it online if got the good deals online too.

It's rude to use a mobile in public. Forces everyone around you to listen to half a conversation!!!

I think there should be public spaces like small rooms that you can go in to make your calls.

They world need to be easy to spot so should be painted a bright colour, how about red?

Then lots of glass so we can see if anyone is using the small private room.

I always find it amusing when the person in front of me starts chatting away to the checkout person and therefore delaying everyone. I will say my pleases and thank yous and not chat.

...

I actually find the use of "someone doing their job " and "people like that" ruder than the act.

And in this life or death situation do you consider the impact of....

" ..I will acknowledge anything asked of me.. like help with packing.. and ask the person on the phone to wait while I pay."

May be you could try using the self-checkout, as they are usually the ones which are open at 2am.

taken out of context. I meant people working... Ie people I don't want to get drawn into a conversation with. I prefer to keep my self to my self while shopping. People love to nit pick comments. Yes I could have worded it better but I didn't.

But if you want to think I'm a rude stuck up bitch I really won't lose any sleep about it... As those I bother to interact with know different.

I am not on my phone every time I go shopping. I just do not see it as rude to answer my phone if it rings... Unless I actually don't hear it or physically can't answer it I will always answer.

And if I happen to be at the checkout then so be it..

No big deal. As I said, I find the people that chat with the checkout ladies and gents far more rude as they are holding up d everyone else... Shopping is something that I detest at the best of times.

you try using self pack for a full trolley.. doesn't work. And apart from yes I need some bags.. no thanks I can pack myself.. and yes or no to cash back.. that is about all that is required.

As I said.. I don't find it rude... I will answer my phone anywhere I need to... even if it's just a friend for a chat.. if I need both hands though I may say to a friend. Give me five and then call back...

Actually thinking about it half my conversations with good friends happen while they are shopping..

When have I said I don't use manners... I always say no thanks I can pack myself and general comments..

can people not multitask... I wouldn't chat to people at the checkout anyway.. it's not what I am there for.. I'm there to pay for my goods.. so basic manners only required..

some people love to make a mountain out of a molehill... I am quite content to be me and to be honest even before mobile phones came out I was the same with shops.

I don't want to chat just because... I will be polite and that's it... please and thank you and wish them a good day.

If mine rings I will always cancel it. After all it's only a matter of minutes before you can return the call.

It's not necessarily the issue of interacting with the checkout operator. The point is whilst your pissing around chatting to whoever is on the other end, you're not giving your full attention to the job in hand. This is rude, disrespectful and seriously fucks off the people in the queue behind you.

Anyone caught doing it should have their phone drowned in a tin of baked beans and be slapped with a wet kipper.

I will never make a call whilst in a supermarket. If the phone happens to ring whilst I am at the checkout I will see who's calling and probably deal with it when I have left the shop. However if I am expecting an urgent call and I have to answer I will say to the checkout staff " I'm sorry I have to take this"

Manners cost nothing.

I'm a fairly gregarious sort and will always have a chat with shop assistants, if I'm in my own town, chances are I know them, taught them, taught their kids, see them at my Slimming World group, am related to them, for female staff, have shagged their husbands sometime in the past (mostly before they were married), for male staff, have shagged them...anyway you get my drift...small town stuff...yes I consider it a bit rude to be on the phone during checkout and it very rarely happens seeing as I'm a Billy No Mates, but I'm also capable of a 3 way convo with the person on the other end of the phone being made aware that I'm also interacting with another human being...also, round here you very rarely get rude checkout operators, probably for the same reasons I've already stated - we all know each other - even when I've gone out to the nearest big town for a big shop, I seldom encounter it, only good banter on the checkouts

I to be fair have most likely been to checkout on the phone about a handful of times... I just don't feel it's rude to take or carry on..

And judging by the calls I get from people out shopping.. I can't be the only one.. it often makes me giggle when they say one minute to me.. and pay the person at the checkout.

As to holding people up.. that's what Bluetooth is for...so still two hands to pack with..

shopping is a chore I hate.. I dislike the crowds.. and the inane chit chat... If I wanted to hear all about the local gossip I would go to a mothers meeting. But quite frankly I want to get it done and get out..

I can't say I've ever had anyone out and about think I'm rude for carrying on. It's not like I just ignore the staff completely... I just do both the call and what I need to at the same time.

Yes I must say I can recall many phone calls being on the other end when others are out at shops and drive thru's.

So to everyone that objects so far, do your morals on this subject extend to not tolerating being in that position as well? Ie. if someone calls you from a checkout are you going to hang up ?

I would also like to clarify at what point of the queue / conveyor belt is using phones considered rude?

Yes I do make personal comment, it's difficult not to when expressing an opinion on what people do - though I have tried to stick to the behaviour in this thread (objective - the behaviour is rude - subjective - the person is rude) ... so your point is what, other than to make a personal comment?

You didn't make clear your question excluded friends - hence I answered with the only type of call I would likely get from someone out shopping.

Personally i would never and have never answered my phone in a shop. Honestly far too embarrassing as far as i feel to answer. and unless i know i am waiting or expecting a deaths door call my phone is on silent in shops so wouldnt hear it anyway. Should i be half expecting a deaths door call ringer would be on low and i would leave the shop to answer it.

Lets face it there was a time when people went to the shops without a phone.. infact if you wanted a phone call or were expecting one you stayed home by your landline.. the world never fell apart and god help us people spoke to each other face to face..

NVQ's are widely regarded as pointless by many employers aka the 'Not Very Qualified' tag.

Working on a till well you get all sorts but a fair number seem bored to death and but fair play to them its better than sponging off the state.

Why shop somewhere else? Simple. We live in free market economy. Take your business elsewhere and tell everyone why you have done so (like I have on occasion) and eventually that business will suffer deservedly. If you're really lucky, that business will cease to be viable and will close. Sounds brutal, I know, but that's the way the World works, commercially.

Give me the service I want and I'll spend money in your business and see it thrive. Treat me like an idiot, show me disrespect or fail to train your staff properly and I'll go elsewhere. That's the way the retail world, certainly, has worked for thousands of years....

ted.

we are bloody human ffs and deserve to be treated with respect not like something that you brought in off your shoe. "

Because some people hold themselves in higher regard than others. They are always misguided and often the opposite is the case. My nan had a word for them but I won't repeat it here.

As someone who spent 15 years serving the great unwashed, yes.

Particularly if you have a queue and need to speak to them and they're busy yakking.

Threw someone out once for it. Got the usual "you deserve to go out of business" crap comment, to which I replied "if all my customers were that rude I wouldn't wait to go out of business, I'd close and retire"

The applause from those in the queue as they stormed out muttering threats was music to my ears lol

If you want to read disrespectful comments put bankers into the thread search facility. Society is what society is and in general people don't treat others with respect all the time.

O o O oo

I have the perfect solution...I put my phone on silent when I go out then I am not tempted to answer a phone.

Those were the days when you could do whatever you wanted in peace for hours on end with no one interrupting you * sigh *

"Why on earth would you be distracted when a checkout monkey is scanning stuff you are going to pay for? They fuck up far too often to leave them to scan things unsupervised.

Some of those checkout monkeys will be university students who may go on to have a better education than you have.

Maybe a better education than you but not me! Oh and the word some is key as the vast majority are NOT students and WONT active anything better than an NVQ. "

And so are unworthy of being treated decently?

"Why some of them are rude and ignorant and checkout monkey seems appropriate are people not allowed to have opinions or call things you don't approve of? "

Whether I approve or not isn't relevant to how you conduct yourself. You can do whatever you feel is appropriate. I guess I was brought up not to be rude to people. I'm happy with my standards but thanks for asking all the same.

Yes think we have all done it but know its rude. Should at least acknowledge the person and then try to end call followed by apology.

Everybody is human. I treat everyone the same- with respect. No need for rudeness. x

Lively debate! Seems that the overwhelming opinion is that it is rude, it's a shame that so much social interaction is missed these days even if it's only a 'hi' and a smile. Z

"My local post office staff are always on the phone, last week they waved me over to be served, I told them I was waiting till the call ended, ooh the look I got!!

They always do it.."

We've got two post offices near us. One is like that, at the other they are really helpful.

Guess which one I went to when I needed proof of posting for 27 letters the other day

"Checkout monkey?? I really cant believe how rude some of you are about people who work as checkout operators!!

This!!

Seriously... think before you press the post button. Would you call someone that to their face? It's equally unacceptable here.

Yep you need to think before you press the "Post Message" button. Would I say something to someone who incorrectly scan something? The answer is YES but if you are foolish enough not to challenge them then more foo you.

I don't have any issues with saying something to someone who had made a mistake. I have issue with you calling someone who earns an honest living working at a supermarket a 'checkout monkey'

Why some of them are rude and ignorant and checkout monkey seems appropriate are people not allowed to have opinions or call things you don't approve of? "

The name you call them is not about them being rude and ignorant. It's about you believing you are so much better than yhem them because they work on a checkout. If you don't have any respect for them use the self service. Most places have them now.

Your comment just reflects what a sad state society is in these days. If you don't have a job your a scrounger. If you do get a job at your local supermarket your a checkout monkey

As for the scanning of something wrong it's very rarely the checkout staffs fault. It's usually some admin person who has put the information in wrong. Bet you have a derogatory term for them as well because you NEVER make mistakes ever!!!
