The real side of "friends".

Just need a bit of a rant (my apologies, I know it's not Thursday).
Ok, so me and my cousin do some baking for special events. A friend asked us if we could do some bits and we agreed on a price of £40 as she wanted alot of some pretty intricate stuff.
So we've worked our asses off since Wednesday with preperations, baking, decoration, intricate details, ect. The day to collect comes and she turns around and says she doesn't want to pay more than £25, using a giant cupcake a friend made for that price as an excuse and going off the amount of cake for the price.
Now, not being funny, I've made giant cupcakes before and effort-wise, they are fuck all. - I had one prepped, baked and fully decorated in under 4 hours and they're not a patch on what we've had to do!
She asked for all this and the detail and style takes a lot of time and effort. We do enjoy baking but the reason we do it is for some extra cash, not because we're doormats with fuck all better to do. Thought we could trust a friend but from now on, we'll stick to cash up-front.
£25 is a joke and an insult. The ingredients alone came to £16 so she wants to pay £9 for days of prep and work? I don't fucking think so.
Anyone want a cupcake? Lol.

So she agreed the price then changed her mind?
Sorry.. I wouldn't have let her have the cakes. Would rather give them to a charity than be taken for a mug. Cheeky mare.
Does she go to Tesco and at the till decide to pay only half?

Some people are just so shitty god knows in the trade I'm in you get that loads, best advice stick to your guns I would rather loose the time and materials than be taken for a fool you agreed on 40 which does not sound a lot at all so just tell her it's forty or nothing you worked hard you should get paid for it |

Don't really help you now, but I always got told as an apprentice.. Never ever ever do work for friends, family or neighbours.. They want the f-in earth, are never happy and want it for nothing
Tell them to get on there bike, even better face time or Skype them and sit eating the hard work infront of them  |

The thing is true friends, and we all know we only have a couple of those would never do that to you. But all the ieither friends will always stiff you. ...I am owed thousands of pounds I have lent out and now know I shall never see again! |

Once she'd agreed to £40 she should have kept to the agreement.
Did she see a pic or did you tell her EXACTLY what she was getting for £40 ?
Don't let it put you off. Next time just make sure the customer knows what they are getting so that you know they will be happy with it.
On a similar note. If I ordered a cake and went to pick it up and thought it was substandard to what i'd expected I wouldn't pay either.
Same with a dress, furniture , anything really ..... |

She has seen pictures and seen the finished result and has said they are Fab (no pun intended) all the way through. She knew what she was getting as we showed her some examples and did everything to her specifications. Without wishing to blow my own trumpet, it's some of the most bold and yet delicate work we have ever done and they came out a lot better than we expected them to. I know that's personal opinion but I honestly can't see any faults and she can't seem to come up with any either.
She just seems to be being funny because of what she's been charged for a giant cupcake. She seems to think that the amount of cake recieved should judge the price despite quality, time and effort.
I don't really know what to think but as has been suggested above, I would sooner cut the losses and take them to a children's hospital than allow our time and effort to benefit someone who thinks our time and work is worth so little ("friendship" aside). x |

Id have giving her her £25 worth and no more and sold the rest to family and friends ..she was out of order next time get a singed agreement of the price I know you shouldn't really have to do this with friends and family but this proves that you obviously do ..good luck xxx |

Might just have to look into that, especially for personalised work that we can't really sell on.
Money up front and some sort of written agreement although I'm not sure if that would work... People could come up with all sorts of complaints to void a contract, couldn't they? x |

ask for a non refundable deposit on the goods usually 50% of total cost. That way if they don't cough up the rest you have some of the total cost.
As for complaints people will always complain if its a genuine complaint then act on it....if its a moan then tell them to get a grip. |

Thanks, Cheeky. That's what we usually do. It's our fault really, we made exceptions for somebody we thought was a close friend.

Friend or not, you had a verbal contract that you both agreed to.
They broke the contract without good reason.
It was the correct decision not to agree to the revised terms.
I would count them as ex-friends.
If I agree to a deal I stick by it - doubly so if friends are involved.
Makes you mad though, don't it. |
