Have known this since I was fifteen and had a crown put in.....am sure the dentist was a big fan of the dentist in Marathon Man!!!!

It was one of the most traumatic experiences of my life. It was 5 years before I ever set foot in a dentist waiting room again.

I now do a 200 mile round trip to go to the dentist as this is the first place since my crown where I have not been in a cold sweat on the way in, and I have stopped passing out in the waiting room.

So butchers????..... not all of them....I have a fabby dentist just now

All I can say Betty is at least you can get a dentist my hubby and I cant get one here for love nor money - our local dentist closed and there was no one to take over his list, so we have to use the local out of hours type service (waiting ages for appointments and check ups) and its really not fun.

However like Stu says if you can find a good one grab hold cos they are few and far between.

My mother used to pass out with nerves before seeing her dentist until she found a great dentist - however someone thought he wasnt that good cos they bit him and they were HIV+ poor bloke had to give up his livelyhood all cos of some tit who never said I dont like dentists.

I always say before I even sit down "sorry mate can you just do the work dont tell me again what your gonna do just do it cos otherwise I will stress and panic" which works for me the work gets done and I dont panic!!

here stu you ever thought of retraining as a dentist??????

er...guess

I've only had two dentists in the last 35 years and both were/ are excellent.

I'm only on the second 'cos the first had to vanish when it transpired he was wasn't actually qualified to work in the UK.

He'd completed his dentistry education in Australasia but never passed his final exams. He faked up a degree and set up in Glasgow. Some of the work he did is twenty years + old now and the current guy reckons it'll see me out.

The state of dentistry in this country is incredible. Incredibly bad.

People queue down the road when one takes people on NHS treatment and if you dont go they kick people off the books.

I once phoned up with an absess having not slept for 3 days (it was over Christmas) and was told it wasnt serious enough for emeergency care.

Third world standards.

The standard of dentistry in the UK is excellent. The standard of a lot of peoples' teeth in the UK is pretty poor and the availability of NHS dental treatment is patchy.

I'd argue that the poor availability is a function of the move away from universal NHS dental care.

I dunno about where you are but, in Scotland, emergency dental care is provided at the dental hospitals by contacting NHS 24.

I have no problems with them apart from the one I went to last year who is basically a thief!!! Some how he conned me out of £500 of treatment and extraction - oh, and that's NHS rates.

Went to see him later in the year as my front tooth felt lose - told me I had gum disease and was losing the bone in my jaw. This would entail a course of antibiotics, then having my teeth cleaned to the root and an antibiotic paste applied to my teeth all for the princely sum of £200. This would have to be repeated every eight weeks at £50 a pop.

After taking an xray he discovered there was bone loss and I would eventually lose my front tooth but...he could save it - it would mean cutting into my jaw and cementing the tooth back in the operation started at £150.

Looking at his brand new X5 on his drive I decided to go to the practce my original dentist referred me to when he selfishly retired to China. It was a little journey away but long story short...no gum disease, yes there is bone loss but nothing can be done as the loss is horizontal as opposed to vertical where they would have been able to cement the tooth back. I also needed a new filling - the theif never mentioned that!!

Clean, consultation, filling - total - £45!!! What a difference!!!

I'm trying to think how much unnecessary work he did on me last year!!

Rang up to try and get in, even an emergentcy one, can't do anything till next bloody week.

So here I am, on soup via a straw as can't open mouth wide enough to alk let alone eat. Mind you, lossing weight x

Milton Keynes

Broke a tooth last week, and listened carefully as the Dentist explained all about implants (teeth, not tits)

"So how much is that?" I thought I better ask before he started...

£2200! for one tooth!

Several other teeth nearly fell out in shock! Went for NHS root canal and crossed fingers...

I once worked for a company who specialised in CCTV / Video and such like. As part of that job I quite often had to do work at the Dental Hospital in Newcastle.

In the part of the hospital, where they teach the student denstists how to do their job, there was a room called 'The Phantom Head Room' which contained long benches, just like the lab benches you had at school. Each station along these benches had a mock up, movable head in which real teeth were fitted and the students practiced doing their stuff.

Along the sides of the room were trays which were brim full with real teeth, presumably collected from dentists surgeries around the region.

It was friggin horrible ...
