Have been out of work for a year now, so am starting to wonder whether or not to go back to university and take on a research degree to waste another 18-24 months of my life adding to the long list of letters after my name.......not sure whether or not it'll be worth spending the money on???
Any thoughts?? |

"I suspect the answer to that depends entirely on in what discipline you'd undertake the degree and what your expectations thereafter would be."
Will go back and expand on my law studies and career....unsure whether or not it'll be a waste of 2 years or so of my life.....just tired of being sat here twiddling my thumbs

Stu, I might be wrong, but from my vague and fuddled memory I thought I had read a post from you saying that some interviews you were unsuccessful in stated you were already overqualified, maybe more qualifications might not help, again from memory ( and something in this post) I thought you were already qualified as a lawyer ( solicitor in Scotland? ) as such cant you start your own practice? or perhaps find someone in similar circumstancies then maybe a partnership?
I know there a multiple areas law is practiced and this may not be possible in your circumstancies but even doing some voluntary legal work, perhaps modest expenses for a charity or small local business that helps the community might keep the boredom at bay while allowing you to keep your options open as something might become available days, weeks, or months after you commit to an expensive and time consuming further education course.

I like Nom's idea of voluntary legal work as a way of staying involved - maybe even combined with post grad study.

lol...yeah i have.....not sure I have the brain for that tho...have a coupla months or so to make a decision on things, so not panicking just yet |

what about a bit of C.A.B work Stu? (no not driving them!) gets you out, would be something else on your CV, and you would still be able to study if you take that option. All the best in whatever you decide xxxxx |

Funnily enough Stu I have just got off the phone with my solicitor.
If you've been on the dole for a year doing the study will be no waste of time at all.
Consider the money issue as I'm guessing all benefits will stop as you wont be available for employment.
Good luck with it as I know its very hard to get into law. Voluntary work at law centres or the CAB is defintely no bad thing either. |
