doctors appointments

once told our (snooty) doctors receptionist to make me an appointment at 10.00am every day for the rest of my life in case i needed one and i would phone to cancel if not needed.

The receptionist at my doctors are bloody useless. They thought nothing of "losing" my very important treatment and wondered why I was upset.
But the doctors aren't much better either! |

Can you turn up at the surgery instead of phoning.
Or if you want the system changed send a letter stating your grievance to the care trust the doctors work with.
Happened with my GP and they had to stop morning telephone appointments and installed a turn up and wait system instead.
Evenings are now appointment only but mornings are get there early enough and you are nominated a time and its either wait or come back 10 min before the appointed time.

between me and the doctor, the receptionist is there to book my appointment etc, not discuss my medical problems... hypocratic oath & all that
the doc should not ask them to ask the patients medical problems imho |

How does the hypocritical oath stop you telling the receptionist the nature of your appointment?
What is wrong with saying that you are seeing him about in general terms?
It can save doctors time and it's ironic that on a thread bemoaning how hard it is to see a gp that something that can save time is viewed as wrong.

That is actually the data protection jct she is breaching.
In small surgeries in particulqr, you do know that receptionist will have access to your records as their job will double as a medical secretary? Admin staff in most surgeries will have access to all your records. |

It's true that receptionists think they are the top dog in most surgeries , however, before anyone shouts there mouth off, remember this.... You have the right to refuse to answer any questions that a receptionist puts to you as long as you state that you will only talk to a medical practitioner ie the doctor or nurse who is treating you. Like I said earlier, I was interviewed by the PCT in relation to our local doctors receptionist leaking private information so I was given loads of stuff about patient rights etc. You can ask for your medical records to be locked so that only qualified medical staff can access them, you can also request a full copy of your own medical records and an explanation of any notes that are on them, |

Presumably the people that have the problem with receptionist asking the nature of an appointment never attend A&E or are hospital receptionist different? Likewise booking an outpatient appointment at a hospital... |

my new surgery is a case of ring on the day for most things but because im a long term depression sufferer if i need to see a doctor to do with this i can normally get in on the same day or the next day. Is there not a walk in clinic near you? they are normally pretty good and quick at seeing you its a case of turn up and wait but ive never waited longer than half an hour. |

I had this a few weeks ago. No apps at all and I was really suffering it took 2 calls by my mother for her saying I was screaming in pain I got told to come straight in. Upshot within mins of seeing a dr I was canulated and being blue lighted in to hospital with meningitis. Funny but not had a problem when I ring since then. Lol |

Yet people don't seem to have any problems sharing their entire medical history with strangers on the bus or in the pub.
The most effective way of maximising a GPs productive time is to start an SMS reminder services - don't forget your appointment on ........... at ...... . If you can't/ won't attend, please let us know ASAP.

We had one who would ask u what was up and what was wrong in the name of giving the details to the doctor. Then be in the school play ground telling everyone about this call she took that morning |

Just tried to get an appointment with my GP as I have had bad indegestion heartburn for the last 3 days got told I can't get an appointment until the week after next  |

Female half recently went to the local doctors, discussed one issue, was told that she had to re book the doctor she was registered too (in same surgery) and they couldnt help. Every time we go its a different Dr so a bit hard to get an appointment with the "registered" one.
Then she asked about another small issue to be told that they only deal with one issue per appointment and to make yet another appointment about that! Told her she should complain formally, what a load of nonsense. " Sorry sir I know you may be having a heart attack but as you previously asked about your bunions I cant deal with it" Bizzare.
and IMHO its none of the receptionists business why I want to see a Dr confidentially for medical or mental health reasons etc. |

I went for this after months of suffering, was told to eat lots yoghurt and drop some weight. Lost a stone and drink a yoghurt drink every morning and hardly ever get it! Hope this helps! |

Mine have been brilliant over the years. However, I tried to book an appointment with a Private Consultant (I am paying) and was told his next available appointment was the end of September

I went for this after months of suffering, was told to eat lots yoghurt and drop some weight. Lost a stone and drink a yoghurt drink every morning and hardly ever get it! Hope this helps!"
I can't really lose any weight as I only weigh 8.5 anyway  and I have yoghurt for breakfast every morning...

Yeah , that's what was going on in our surgery until I had the receptionist sacked. Now I go private, no problems getting to see him and don't have to pass on any details to stuck up receptionist ! |

Yeah , that's what was going on in our surgery until I had the receptionist sacked. Now I go private, no problems getting to see him and don't have to pass on any details to stuck up receptionist ! "

Forgot to add, if your in London you should know that you can, Harley street ? I know most of them are plastic surgeons etc but in amongst them are some practising doctors . I have an MP friend who uses one . |

To the OP, I don't often go the docs, but yes if I tried to get an appointment that day it a nuisance to get through on the phone.  |

Have you written a letter of complaint to the practice manager.
Doctors receptionists do get the brunt of patients complaints bit it is the GP who have set the rules and told them what to say. Doctors put far too much pressure on their admin staff
I agree that stating your medical symptoms in a waiting room is inappropriate, lack of patient dignity etc but it is the doctors who are to blame |

It doesn't work in the opticians practice where I work. We are always fully booked a week in advance, usually running five clinics a day. Today we had a third of patients fail to attend and not call to cancel. Those appointments could have been given to someone else
If it doesn't work for us I can't see it working for a gp practice |

as i've stated in other posts im a cleaner
and i actually work in a doctors practice
the practice manager told me 2 yrs ago when i started that being the receptionist
is the worst job to do
why ??
cos people not want to tell the receptionist whats wrong but he told me
we ask as different gps specialise in some things so if we ask can put you with the right one |

From my own experience, my GP can walk on water and juggle snow flakes in hell.
Could not ask for a better GP or his reception staff.
Rang last Tuesday as I had a chest infection, told reception I did not need to see my GP just a prescription for some Antibiotics and Steroids.
Reception rang back 2 mins later to tell me it was ready and collect it immediately.
Maybe people need to find a GP that meets their own needs, and only ring when its absolutely necessary.
Before anyone jumps in, the GPs are as over run as the local A&E, because some people think a splinter in their finger is life or death. |

We live in a nation that has an almost unique NHS service, the fact that we can see a GP without having to pay a substantial fee is in itself a rarity in the Western World in this day and age.
I think some people lose sight of the fact that the NHS, and the whole General Practitioner system, is stretched to breaking point at times.
Of course it's not ideal to have to book a GP appointment on the morning of seeing them, and it can be very annoying, but sometimes we need to think how lucky we are compared to many other nations. |

I personally don't agree that people should be able to ring up, self assess and a GP prescribe without seeing the patient. It's unsafe in my opinion.
It is frustrating to try and get a same day appointment but at least we do have good access to health care in this country |

You see I wouldn't like that as you are self diagnosing. Now ok not knowing your health I don't know if it is a commom occurance but unless the antibotics are on a repeat prescription they are giving meds out without seeing a patient. |
