What tv programmes and characters scared you/left a scar on your psyche as a child.
Four come to mind for me.
"Davros" the daleks leader.Erm "mr noseybonk" who was a creepy guy with a huge nose in a kids educational programme jigsaw.
"Mr Johnny" from the original "Carrie's war" and the series "Hammer house of horror" which was simply sublime viewed from behind a cushion. |

The Rovers (the 8 ft diameter over-inflated-condom-like balls) which bounced across the sand in The Prisoner...... and then suffocated anyone trying to escape from.... 'the Village'..... Used to cry me little eyes out at that.... mush to amusement of my sadistic sister!!! Bitch! Lol!

"Tales of the unexpected used to always get me "
Yes there were some creepy episodes and the theme tune set the mood nicely.
Would agree re Salem's lot also.
Remember the dead boy tapping at the window and James Mason emerging from the coffin. |

Just thought of something else, but it's in a film, not TV so hope it counts..
The Child Catcher in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. Actually hid behind my Mum in the cinema when he came on screen.
Maybe if I knew he was being played by a rampantly gay ballet dancer (had I known what 'rampantly gay' meant when I was six!!) maybe - just maybe - I wouldn't have been so frightened...... or maybe I would !!! Lol!

The Price is Right........ that poor little mountaineer carrying the fag to the top of the mountain and then falling off. I know you couldn't see the carnage but imagination fills in the blanks... a bit like the ear cutting in Reservoir Dogs. |

Children of the Stones,
Rupert the Bear,
Chocky,
Murun Buchstansangur,
Ivor the Engine,
Dougal and The Blue Cat...which we had on vinyl as it was pre-video, we listened to it in the dark to make it scarier!
The Tomorrow People,
And every single public information film ever made in the seventies. Bring THOSE back, they really worked! |

This is my thing, watching it never scared me but after I used to have a recurring nightmare where the hulk was chasing me bloody terrifying, I made the mistake of telling the wife once so now any time the hulk films are on she will always ask me he I'm ok and not scared, or if I want her to change the channel |

Our teenage babysitter used to let me and my sister watch her horror videos, and we're both terrified of clowns thanks to Pennywise and the Pierrot from Poltergeist (I think).
And I know they're not real but having seen An American Werewolf in London and The Howling in one sitting werewolves scare the life out of me... |

Not a tv program but those safety adverts where kids were playing football near pylons and one got electrocuted.
And the Jaws films made me scared of swimming pools. |

West Wales and Cardiff |
Mr Claypole from sodding Rentaghost used to freak me out. In fact, everyone on that programme did, but him more than any of them!
And the obvious daleks and cybermen too. I had terrible nightmares after watching Close Encounters of the Third Kind too.
Funnily enough, I actually went to the Devil's Tower in Wyoming, where that was set, a few years ago. Was still pretty freaked, but it was a cathartic experience! |

The titles to jackanory. The tone of the blokes voice repeating the word over and over was like a calling from the tv to come closer.
And at 45 I admit those bloody angels on the recent doctor who caused me to spill hot coffee on my crotch. It's probably the cheapest effects they have but the editing and music all add to the mix.
And that has reminded me about the Jon Pertwee episodes with the spiders.
And finally I seem to remember a kids programme about a lad called sky whose eyes would glow a wierd colour. That's just not right.
Wish I hadn't seen this thread now I'm going to have to go back into therapy! |

"Dr who. I had smash hits on tape and it had the theme tune on it. I used to hid behind the sofa when it was on lol"
I was just about to write the same, but it was the original 60's theme for some reason that really scared the shit out of me, I always had to make sure I was downstairs when it started otherwise I would freeze in fear that the Daleks were there too, which brings me onto my second fear as a child ' the Daleks' always put the fear of god into me.
Hiding behind the couch I would tell my mother I was looking for something until the music finished then I would come out. |

Can only remember two things scaring theiving daylights out of me as a child. The Sea Devils on Dr. Who, though I'm not why them in particular. The other was an episode of The New Avengers that had a child's Victorian doll that went around killing people. Freaky! ![](/icons/s/sad.gif) |
