A Secret Hideaway In the caravan of love

I do try to be a lovely mother-in-law but often wonder what the girl think of me really.

I think we get on very well and enjoy similar things so do spend time together without the menfolk.

I do try to give them their own space.

Perhaps I’ve been influenced by watching to much Les Dawson and Reginald Perrin, but when I hear the term mother in law used it always conjures up thoughts of a wife’s maternal mother rather than a husbands maternal mother….

My ex's mother was a complete bag. We really didn't get on and on one occasion slapped me at a party and told me to stop being such a bitch!

I would have slapped her back.

I did once spurt vodka and diet all over her, her cream carpet and her leather sofa. That was payback!

I am intrigued to know how your ex responded to that at the time?

I have one son in law and two in the wings. They all think I'm pretty awesome and I think they're all pretty cool too as my daughters are blissfully happy.

So no, and my late ma in law was lovely too.

My MIL was a lovely woman, daft as a brush, but no nonsense with it. When her son and I divorced, we still kept in touch and I would pop out to see her birthdays, Xmas, Mother's Day and a few other times a year until she passed away about 8 years after we split up. I'm also still in touch with all my outlaws, my niece was more pleased that I came to her wedding than my ex husband as she hadn't had much contact with him since he emigrated and tomorrow I'm attending my nephew's 30th birthday party

My ex-mother in law was described by her daughter as Norah Batty.

Never was a truer description more apt. She admonished us when she walked in on us whilst exchanging a harmless kiss.. and we slept in separate beds when visiting even though married...which we accepted as 'under their roof' etc.

My ex father in law was a lovely bloke even though he was s Pompey supporter.

Mother in laws are women just like many of us on here. They just have a particular role relating to their son's girlfriend/ wife/partner.

And it can be a tough role to be "the other" woman in the life of your son - while you don't want to interfere, you dont want to tell them what to do, you want a friendly relationship hopefully based on growing trust. Different from the relationship you have with your daughter or friends but nonetheless containing some similar traits.

I'm very lucky as I get on really well with my in-laws...tho she does say that she's only nice to me in case I send her son back lol

I get treated just the same as her two daughters even to the point of being given an equal share out of hubby's gran's jewellery when she passed away...

Also, my hubby gets on well with my folks too so nice all round, makes christmas's much easier!
