When you post something to a website, the data sent is 'cleaned' by the website form processing. This removes malicious code, database hacking code, and html code is removed from the data or converted into something that represents the intended input. An ampersand is converted into & on some systems, likewise you may have seen © instead of the copyright C, or &euro i stead of the Euro symbol,

it's just microsofts crappy legacy coding when windows 3 was created space was at a premium, font sets were compressed and some symbols were removed so some symbols & % @ are shown wrong newer font sets are now complete and should work ok hence this effect is only on some sites. it would require a complete re-write of the site from the ground up to remove |
