Noticed on one of the social networking sites some people complaining about the UK donating £6m to Haiti, some were stating charity begins at home, i.e. this Country, well, I for one don't deny we have some major issues in this Country, but come on, £6m is a drop in the ocean compared to the financial mess were in, the citizens of Haiti have nothing, zero, zilch, if the donations being made to Haiti provide enough food / water / shelter to enable it's citizens to get through this crisis then it's £6m well spent.
I'm convinced some people moan just for the sake of it. |

That's a fair enough comment, but what happens when this country is in the brown smelly stuff?
Granted, we don't have big natural disasters, per se, but we've had a good few floods that have caused many hundreds of millions of pounds worth of damage, notwithstanding the personal hardships that the affected people have gone through.
Do we (this country) get any offers of support or aid........?
Just something to think on ;o) |

"but we've had a good few floods that have caused many hundreds of millions of pounds worth of damage"
50,000 people didn't lose their lives tho
"notwithstanding the personal hardships that the affected people have gone through"
Not one person was traped in rubble, praying for someone to come and help
"Do we (this country) get any offers of support or aid........?"
We should have an infrastructure in place to deal with any national emergency the country encounters, unlike some third world Countries, and when they cry for help, we have a duty to assist.
"Just something to think on ;o)"
Now that's something to think on |

Correct, that was when we had full employment enabling people to contribute into the system, neither did we have a benefits system then, like we have today. |

Aside from the fact that helping those in perilous need is the decent thing to do.
The fact that we can help at all shows that our economy is in a better shape than those we're helping. I could be lying under a mountain of rubble right now, but I'm not, so I'll help those that are. |

But you can see where people are coming from though .......
I agree, as I'm sure most folks do, that its a horrible thing that has happened and yes the people need help, but it's easy to see why it sticks in the throats of some.
How many times does our government say they can't afford to do this or they can't afford to do that, but as soon as there's a disaster somewhere in the world, money seems to be no object .. There must be 101 projects in the UK where a few million quid would work wonders - Dual carriageway of the A1 North of Newcastle as an example, but will they do it ? will they buggery ....
I'm not saying that I agree or disagree, but it is easy to see why some people feel this way when they see millions of £'s being apparently given away to other parts of the world. |

there has never been a time in our history when we have had full employment - according economic studies this can never happen in a free state
on the other hand why on earth are we even having this debate!!! people are dying - just because you cant see them doesnt mean their pain isnt real - and this is a natural catastrophe this isnt some mad cat leader taking all the money and leaving his people in despair ------ Bi your so very right and well done ------ this is something we should do without blinking |

I was thinking today about the Euro miliion lottery. For mjor crsises like this it would be great if you could tick a box and say have 1/5th of your winning donated to a major disaster. That would raise a few million and from people who had said yes. |
