It seems the Viagra patent runs out later this month and this should make a big change to the way it's made available.
Check out BBC Radio4's You and Yours 12.00-13.00, 13/06/2013 for more. |

The generic ingredient in Viagra is sildenafil which has been widely and legally available as a Viagra alternative for years in the shape of kamagra , kamanagra and cialis , I'm not sure what part of Viagra is patented but its certainly not the drug itself , there are many legitimate online pharmacies that have been selling these alternatives for years |

No time to look this up but I believe the patent applies to the formulation ie the mix of certain chemicals and the the proportion in which they're mixed. |

Viagra = Sildenafil Citrate (half life 3.5 hours)
Cialis = Tadalafil Citrate (half life 17 hours!!!)
Levitra = Vardenafil Citrate (half life 4.5 hours)
3 different compounds. Sildenafil Citrate was the first invention, by pfizer. This is branded Viagra by pfizer. They have a patent on the compound, and that patent expires at various dates in different countries (the US patent is yet to expire, the UK patent has just recently expired. Egypt's patent is not valid/ignored so local pharms have been producing generics for years, India's patent is not valid so again local pharms have been producing generics for years).
Essentially if you've been buying cheap Viagra over the past few years, then it's likely imported from somewhere like Egypt, India, Brazil or elsewhere where local pharms can 'legally' produce the stuff.
The expiration of the patent in the UK means that UK pharmaceutical companies e.g. Glaxo can produce a generic and sell it at their own price without paying fees to pfizer.
As for Cialis (Tadalafil Citrate), this compound is still under patent for many years in the UK i think till around 2020. This is basically "Viagra Version 2.0" owned by ICOS and/or Glaxo not pfizer. It is a different compound and has nothing to do with the Viagra patent. Although you don't have to have a phd in chemistry to see that Viagra, Cialis, and Levitra compounds are from the same family of drugs. "-afil Citrate".
So while this could well open the drug up to the masses, and reduce the costs for those who regularly purchase brand viagra. There'll still be people ordering generics for the other ED drugs that havent expired namely Cialis (which is seen as the weekender ED drug compared to Viagra's 6 or so hour stint). |

With a private prescription from your own GP Sildenafil (generic version of Viagra) is available from at least two online UK pharmacies for 85p a tablet (100mg). If your order is over £40 p&p is free. They offer a private prescription service too. The drug is UK sourced and licensed. |
