Would you describe Terry and June as classic British comedy? The BBC were the Kings of comedy in the 70's and 80's but was this one of their great shows? Or is it time to reappraise it and but it up there with Fawlty Towers and Fools and Horses?

Bridgwater - Somerset

Middle class, middle aged, middle of the road comedy. Cliché ridden. Suburbia, management job, boss coming to dinner, what could obviously go wrong?

I guess there may be half a dozen classic episodes, but they were churned out like they were a sausage machine.

It was not unfunny or dire, but probably not truly great.

I remember an interview with June Whitfield and a lot of people believed that her and Terry Scott were married

They were all great but in a different way. T&J was a clasic BBC sitcom with no chance of offence. FT pushed at the edges and poked fun at a manic depressive. OF&H asked us to love those on the edge of legality, and we did.

Great TV

I would put it in the same category as shows like Bless This House and On the Buses ……

Definitely not all timeless classic in the sense that today's audiences might tune in religiously to watch re-runs…

Holiday on the Busses. Now there was a great film, was this the best film spin off from a tv comedy show ever?

I used to love on the buses as a kid but don't find it as funny now im older ...and i think Terry & June is on that level along with Steptoe & Son and Nearest & Dearest....Faulty Towers is so much better for comedy value i would watch this Alf Garnett and Porridge over Terry & June any day

It ain't half hot mum contained some questionable content that could easily be taken as offencive by the Burmese and Japanese..

But the idiosyncratic characterisation of Italian, German, French and British was an essential part of the humour though,,,,and there was no real disrespectful element to any of their nationalities…

The same can't be said for "It ain't half hot mum"

Allo Allo!!! Oh my giddy aunt.....that is one of the best programmes I have ever watched....Officer Crabtree yes yes yes! And to think that I can laugh at the jokes and the humour when my family lived and suffered under German rules during WW2 is (in my opinion) a huge credit to the script writers!

Hmmm... what sets the 'greats' apart is the writing. When you mention Fools and Horses, Fawlty Towers, Dad's Army etc etc the thing which sets them apart is that most people can recall vividly a number of plot lines and scenarios from them. Mention 'Germans' in relation to Fawlty Towers, Batman and Robin in relation to Only Fools, 'Whistle while you work' about Dad's Army, and you can see the whole episode - almost word for word - unfolding in your mind.. and that comes from the writing.

Can the same be said for Terry and June..?

Don't think so...

Ted

I'd forgotten about that one!

I watched all of these, partly because my Dad likes a comedy, partly because it was all that was on and partly because it was the only time you would see black people in a show.

Terry and June was a very traditional situation comedy. Not a lot happened but they were just the next door neighbours we spied upon. Not great but very popular at the time.

The thing with mind your language and it ain't half hot mum was all the kids the next day in school trying to imitate the accents. They were truly awful shows and I've no idea how they were allowed to be shown.

And that awful song goodness gracious me by Peter Sellers. Even the teachers at our school would pull that stupid accent whilst addressing an Asian child.

I totally agree, it's unbelievably poor…and has gone some way to cure my wanton lust for France-de-la-tour, for whom I had a real crush back in her Miss Jones days…. sigh

In the 70's & the 80's all comedy was about stereotyping forigners and taking the mick out of their accents, culture and the jokes too in the school playground.

Benny hill, jim davidson for example.

And all the Irish jokes.

But it was only a British humor, no other country took the mick on tv like the British did.

If you watch some of the old shows it is surprising how much innuendo and smut there was really in TV shows at the time.

But at the time as a youngster you just laughed at the slapstick and jokes.
