Sending SMS messages on Samsung Galaxy III

I am attempting to send a long text message ie more than 160 characters that will run into multiple messages...possibly 10.
When I send it...it sends as an MMS and as the recipient can't view MMS messages I need to resend it as an SMS. Do I have to break the message down into smaller chunks? Or is there a setting that I am not using?
Anybody any ideas? |

Seems we're in the same boat. Sent the message in smaller chunks....so that's ok.
There must be a way to send a long message by SMS....but I can't as yet see it in the settings.  |

Recipient doesn't have email.
Seems this is the feature of Android phones. The limit for SMS is 480 characters....in effect 3 text messages. There doesn't seem to be a way of overriding this. I have now though checked a setting that alerts me when I've reached the limit. |

With handcent, you can certainly change it. WhatsApp is a Web based messaging service which doesn't suit all, but handcent is just a replacement for the stock messaging service, but is more adaptable. |

Sounds like Android still sucks! I'm due an upgrade now and was contemplating switching from iPhone to maybe the Experia z but I think I'll probably wait for the 5S to come out now.
Incidentally, I'm not an apple fanboy, it's just when I got my first iPhone, androids were so far behind. That and I've spent a lot of time putting my cd collection into iTunes. |
